Book excerpt: Higher education and intercollegiate athletics have long had a complicated relationship. Examining the interconnection between the two and from a variety of theoretical and practical angles, this volume highlights many of the debates surrounding higher education and intercollegiate athletics and the financial dependency between these two long-standing entities. Topics include: a comprehensive history of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, an examination of the funding mechanisms utilized by intercollegiate athletic departments, an in-depth magnification of the increasing corporatization of higher education and athletics, and a look into potential future debates and lines of inquiry surrounding this topic. This is the 5th issue of the 41st volume of the Jossey-Bass series ASHE Higher Education Report. Each monograph is the definitive analysis of a tough higher education issue, based on thorough research of pertinent literature and institutional experiences. Topics are identified by a national survey. Noted practitioners and scholars are then commissioned to write the reports, with experts providing critical reviews of each manuscript before publication.

Book excerpt: This study, based on data from 56 colleges, looks closely at fundraising and advancement efforts run by athletics departments themselves. The study reports on the size and dimensions of these efforts, including data on budgets, staffing levels and salaries. The data is broken out for Division 1, Division 2 and Division 3 colleges, and for public and private colleges, by enrollment and type of college. The report covers personnel and salaries, costs and results, as well as detailed data on the effectiveness of various fundraising channels and methods including use of blogs for campaigns, email campaigns, brick campaigns, use of YouTube, Vimeo , Facebook, Google+, Twittter and other social media. The study presents precise data on the impact of booster clubs, the results from selling facility naming rights, and of efforts to raise funds from former athletes who went to the college. The study also looks at the state of relations between the general college advancement office and the advancement offices of athletic departments, as well as at how athletic departments evaluate their fundraising efforts. Other issues include a look at the use of fundraising consultants, the structure of incentives for giving and the use of rewards for donors, among other issues.

Book excerpt: For several decades in America, athletic programs in colleges and universities received financial support and resources primarily from their respective schools and such sources as alumni and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). More recently, however, college coaches assigned to athletic departments and the presidents and marketing or public relations officials of schools organize, initiate, and participate in fund-raising campaigns and thus obtain a portion of revenue for their sports programs from local, regional and national businesses, and from other private donors, groups, and organizations. Because of this inflow of assets and financial capital, intercollegiate athletic budgets and types of sports expanded and in turn, these programs became increasingly important, popular, and reputable as revenue and cost centers within American schools of higher education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Suggestions on how to enhance a college's fund-raising abilities are presented. Six sections are as follows: exemplary performers (noting the relationships between amounts raised and strategies employed); what works and what does not work in fund- raising (an institution's public visibility is important, and a poverty strategy is not); whether successful athletic programs enhance support (athletic success tends to result in larger contributions to athletic programs with spillovers to academic programs); how tax laws affect voluntary support (though recent tax code revisions raised serious concern that the levels of voluntary support of higher education might decline, some indicators suggest that the decline might not be as serious as forecast); new ideas in nonprofit research, focusing on an 1988 study by Weisbrod that shows that a tax increase of 10% may result in philanthropic declines of as little as .1% or as much as 2.54%); and what is in store for the future (suggesting a broad, national database of higher education donors to provide the sorts of information social scientists require to test propositions). Contains 10 references. (SM).

Book excerpt: This study reviewed the funding, budgeting, revenue generating practices of community college athletics. Several theories informed the research including institutional theory (isomorphism) academic capitalism, resource dependency, and role/work conflict. The design of the study was to interview an athletic administrator or athletic director, a coach, and an athletic trainer from each of the community colleges in a western state. These interviews occurred on the community college campus to allow for observation of the facilities. In addition, a national sample of athletic trainers from community colleges was interviewed. The study indicates that community college athletics is philosophically resisting the pressure to look and behave like larger collegiate athletic departments. Resistance is not universal however; some community college athletics personnel consider the move toward budget driven decisions and marketing similar to Division I (one) institutions as coming and inevitable. Isomorphism is alive and well among community college institutions. The decisions for spending and growth are not always the decisions, which are best for the institution and its athletes. At times these decisions are made because of mimetic isomorphism. The study indicates that athletic personnel can base decisions in the context of the budget and fund raising practices. These decisions are not yet raised to a critical state where untoward influence on the institution is felt at the community college level. Overall, community college athletic personnel are individuals who care about the student athlete model and believe the role of collegiate athletic is to contribute to the community and the college. I found the athletic personnel to be professional and supportive of athletics from the president to the departments, through the athletic directors, coaches and athletic trainers.
