To alleviate these loses, dairy producers have invested into designing and installing ventilation and cooling systems for their dairy cows. The design of dairy barns is usually (for new barns) based on the cooling requirements for the dairy cows, which vary significantly with breed and region. New systems are beginning to cool the cow itself, rather than the whole barn in order to increase efficiency. The present work evaluates two dairy cow cooling systems: a positive pressure tube ventilation, using experimental data as computational modeling; and a conduction cooling heat exchanger using experimental data. Testing these systems at production scale is expensive and time consuming for producers. In order to alleviate these costs, computational fluid dynamic models can be used to estimate the systems performance before they are installed. However, there is a need to understand how accurately the cow should be represented within these models. Therefore this study evaluates six different cow analogs, three primitives (sphere, cylinder, rectangular prism) and three realistic (six-cylinder cow, low polygon cow, high polygon cow) geometries in order to compare and contrast their applicability in computational modeling. The study discusses the ability of computational fluid dynamics models to evaluate positive pressure tube ventilation. The ability of conduction cooling to maintain cows cool during high temperatures and humidity is discussed in detail. Furthermore, the different cow geometries are evaluated and suggestions as to when each is to be used are provided. The low polygon cow representation is then used to evaluate the animal occupied zone as porous media assumptions within the holding area of the barn.
Book Synopsis Computational Study and Optimization of Wet Cooling Media in Direct Evaporative Heat Exchangers by : Tejas Vijay Bhongale

This book was released on 2017 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evaporative cooling media pads are the primary component of importance in direct evaporative cooling units. To increase the overall efficiency of direct evaporative cooling systems, a wet cooling media pad is considered for further optimization in design and operation. An installation technique called 'staging' of cooling media pads is examined and evaluated for its incremental cooling, water usage, and operational cooling efficiency. For Staging, a cooling media is divided into multiple vertical sections, and separate water distribution headers control each part. Staging of cooling media can reduce water consumption in data centers and potentially lessen the amount of cooling media required. Increasing the number of stages allows more precise control of humidity and temperature at the discharge. The objective of the present study is to validate a computational model in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software in predicting the cooling efficiency of wet cooling pads. At the initial level of this project, a CFD model of cooling media will be developed and analyzed. Then, this CFD model will be validated with existing experimental data for GLASdek or CELdek cooling pads. The basic parameters of influence such as pad thickness, flute angle, water flow rate are considered for parametric studies and their impact on cooling media saturation effectiveness, the pressure drop across the media and water consumption will be reported. Also, the degree of increase in cooling capacities as the cooling media wall is scaled/stacked up to accommodate higher cooling unit flow discharge will be investigated. Furthermore, this model will be further modified for 'staged' installations and analyzed through the simulations. This information will be helpful in understanding and improving wet cooling media performance.

Book Synopsis Generalized Equation for Cooling Time Evaluation and Its Verification by CFD Analysis by : D. Yurchenko

This book was released on 2009 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper, a generalized analytical equation for cooling time evaluation is analyzed and compared with existing exact solutions and verified by computation fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation. The process of quenching of semiaxles and cylindrical forgings in water flow is also considered. Two approaches are analyzed. The traditional approach focuses on quenching, which is based on Newton's boundary condition between the solid surface and fluid. The second approach solves a conjugate heat transfer problem based on a full set of Navier--Stokes equations. CFD technology does not require knowledge of the heat transfer coefficients at the surface of steel parts. Both approaches and results of calculations were compared and the results showed that a generalized correlation can be used for cooling time calculation both for simple and complicated configurations. Calculation results coincide with each other, which indicates that the generalized equation is a suitable method for calculations and development of intensive quenching technologies. As an example, the processes for quenching semi-axle and cylindrical forgings are considered. CFD analysis successfully detected small stagnant zones at the surface of the steel. Such zones could be related to quench crack formation. These results can be used for designing and development of intensive quenching processes.

This book was released on 2019 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continuous provision of quality supply air to data center's IT pod room is key parameter in assuring effective data center operation without any down time. Due to number of possible operating conditions and non-linear relations between operating parameters make the working mechanism of data center difficult to optimize energy use. At present industries are using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to simulate thermal behaviour for all types of operating conditions. The focus of this study is to predict Supply Air Temperature using Artificial Neural Network(ANN) which can overcome limitations of CFD such as high cost, need of expertise and large computation time. For developing ANN, input parameters, number of neurons and hidden layers, activation function and the period of training data set were studied. A commercial CFD software package 6sigma room is used to develop a modular data center consisting IT pod room and an air-handling unit. CFD analysis is carried out for different outside air conditions. Historical weather data of 1 year was considered as an input for CFD analysis. The ANN model is "trained" using data generated from these CFD results. The predictions of ANN model and the results of CFD analysis for a set of example scenarios were compared to measure the agreement between the two. The results show that the ANN model predicts much faster than full computational fluid dynamics simulations with good prediction accuracy. This demonstrates that ANN is an effective way for predicting the performance of an air-handling unit.
