Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of Christian Missions In its origin and history, Christianity stands dis tinguished from all the ethnic religions, or religions of some particular nation or race. Many religions have had their home exclusively within single races or peoples, making no effort, and showing no abil ity, to go farther in the world. Such were the religions of ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, Scandi navia: such also is Hinduism, which is the religion of India alone; and reveals no missionary feeling toward mankind. Such is the religion Of China, which goes beyond its native realm only to influ ence kindred peoples. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to Christian Missions For years the author had been conducting a brief study of Christian missions, using such text-books as had been available. He had given lectures supplementary to the text-books he at the time was using. His lectures had grown in volume, till he found little time for interlocutory study with the class after delivering them. These lec tures had all along been informed by a unifying principle - the relation of the mental grasp of the Christian system to mission work. He had been asked repeatedly to publish them. Two years ago he began to rewrite those bearing on world-wide missions, as opportunity was given; and now offers these to the Christian public, and particularly to the ministers, elders, deacons and brotherhood-workers of his own communion. It will be found that they constitute an attempt at a philosophy of missions; and, it is hoped, that they contain a relatively small amount of unessential detail. It has been a constant aim, at any rate, to burden the memory only with the essential facts; but to stir the thought. In a word, the aim has been to introduce to the proper study of missions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Christian Missions The story of missions, which reaches back to the beginning of the Christian era, and embraces almost every country in the world, cannot be told within the limits of a single volume. The task which I have ventured to undertake is of a far less ambitious character, my object being to provide the intelligent reader with an outline sketch of Christian missions which may enable him to obtain a correct perspective, but which will need to be filled in for each several country and period of history by much careful study. This volume is not intended to serve as a diction ary nor as a commentary upon missions, but as a text-book to encourage and facilitate their study. Those who have devoted the largest amount of time to such study will be most ready to forgive its imperfections and shortcomings. A well-known authority on the subject of Foreign Missions, to whom the task of writing this book was originally assigned, but who failed to respond to the invitation, wrote to its present author, You have an almost impossible task; I should absolutely quail at the work you are doing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Decisive Hour of Christian Missions The World Missionary Conference held in Edinburgh in June of the present year constituted in its plan, in its personnel, in the Spirit which characterized it, and in its promise, the most Significant gathering ever held in the interest of the world's evangelization. In preparation for the Conference eight representative international Commissions had been at work for over eighteen months making a scientific investigation and study of some of the most pressing and vital problems Of Christian missions. Associated With these Commis Sions as correspondents were the principal missionaries and leaders of the Church on the mission fields, as well as many of the foremost thinkers and workers of the missionary forces at home. The reports re sulting from these special investigations have afforded a very comprehensive presentation of the Tacts about the main aspects of the missionary situation. Those who have had opportunity to examine the mass of evidence gathered by the Commissions and to listen to the discussions of the reports at the Edinburgh Con ference must have been impressed with the fact that the present is the decisive hour of Christian missions. In the history Of Christianity there has never been such'a remarkable conjunction of Opportunities and crises on all the principal mission fields and of favor ing circumstances and possibilities on the home field. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Missionary Principles and Practice: A Discussion of Christian Missions and of Some Criticisms Upon Them The purpose of this volume is (1) to set forth some of the main principles of the mission movement on which it rests in its appeal at home and in its work abroad (2) to apply these principles in some illustrative instances, especially to the conditions in China, with which men are now most familiar, and which many regard as putting the missionary enterprise to its conclusive test, (3) to suggest by a few sketches of mission fields and the results of mission work in life, both the need and power of the work, and (4) to enforce the duty and privilege of the serious attempt speedily to evangelize the world, and thus enable Christianity at once to dis play and to realize its divine mission to all mankind. Some of the chapters of this book have appeared in the Churchman, the Congregationalist, the Sunday School Times, the Homiletic Review, the Missionary Review, and other papers. The concluding chapter appears also in Twentieth Century Addresses, a volume containing the addresses delivered by the appointment of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church, in recognition of the advent of the Twentieth Century, before the General Assembly in Philadelphia, on May 14th, 1901. In this day of skepticism and growing infidelity the study of missions affords glimpses of Christian evidences whose argu ments are overwhelming and unanswerable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Missionary Fields and Forces of the Disciples of Christ The National Convention of the Disciples of Christ, held in Springfield, Illinois, October 16-23, 1896, adopted the following recommendations: "1. That this convention approve the idea of adding, within certain limits, the educational feature to the Christian Endeavor Societies among us. This added educational feature shall include helps for the systematic reading of the Bible, a selected course of reading concerning missions in general, and our own missions in particular, and thorough instruction as to the origin, the principles, and the history of our own movement for the restoration of New Testament Christianity. "2. That this convention approve of the purpose to provide a series of hand-books for our young people covering the fields not already satisfactorily covered." In harmony with this action three courses of reading are being planned and a handbook, introductory to each course, has been prepared. This little volume is the second hand-book in the study Missions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Missionary Enterprise: A Collection of Discourses on Christian Missions The task of selection has been, in some instances, peculiarly difficult. Several discourses, of great excellence, have been omit ted, which, perhaps, would have been included, had not circum stances appeared to encourage the expectation, that a second series might be demanded. Should this volume be favorably received, another may succeed, comprising not only sermons, but a rich variety of addresses, essays, and eloquent appeals, all pertaining to the same great subject -christian Missions. Many of this class of productions are too valuable to be left scattered in ephemeral forms, and should be gathered up, and added to the increasing stock of our Missionary literature, and thus made to extend and perpetuate their salutary efficiency. The chapter on the Conquest of Europe: West, affords an admirable historical background for study books on Latin America while the history of the Greek Church throws light on the religious life of Russia and the Balkans. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Missions, Vol. 1: Their Agents, Their Method, and Their Results This policy, once adopted by England and Hol land in their Asiatic possessions, but long since aban doned by both, is now peculiar to Russia among all the nations of the earth. No similar reproach can be urged, even by those who esteem them least, against the protestant churches of England and America. They have done, during the last fifty years, and are still doing, all which their zeal suggests and their caution permits, to recommend to the heathen world the religious systems which they severally profess. How far they have succeeded in this aim, and by what methods they have sought to promote it, will sufficiently appear in the following pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Missions and Social Progress, Vol. 2 of 3: A Sociological Study of Foreign Missions The attempt to collate the manifold results of modern missions, and to present in an orderly and comprehensive survey their bearings upon social progress, is a task which has not been free from difficulties; nor has it been even thus imperfectly accomplished, without patient and exacting labor. The original plan of issuing this work in two volumes, made before the magnitude of the undertaking was realized, has now been changed, and it will appear in three volumes of corresponding size, the last of which will contain the four remaining divisions, or groups, of Lecture VI., and also extended statistical summaries giving a detailed survey of missionary Operations throughout the world. The student will observe that the full force of the demonstration presented in this treatise does not depend alone upon the measure of social transformation which has been actually accomplished by missions up to the present time, although there is nothing to fear even now from that test, however searching. The argument rests rather upon the evi dence of a clear trend or tendency in missionary activities to work for social betterment, and a consequent reasonable assurance concerning the ultimate outcome. If it can be made apparent, on the basis of evi dence now discoverable, that the continued success of missionary effort will be almost certain to secure results similar but more decisive than those already outlined, then the hidden glory of missions comes to light. Their power to transform the higher phases of environment and to supply forces which will be effective in modifying and directing social development is thus sufficiently attested.
