Book excerpt: Understanding single charged pion production via neutrino-nucleus charged current interaction in the neutrino energy region of a few GeV is essential for future neutrino oscillation experiments since this process is a dominant background for v[mu] → vx oscillation measurements. There are two contributions to this process: single pion production via baryonic resonance (v[mu]N → [mu]- N[pi]+) and coherent pion production interacting with the entire nucleus (v[mu]A → [mu]- A[pi]+), where N is nucleon in the nucleus and A is the nucleus. The purpose of the study presented in this thesis is a precise measurement of charged current single charged pion productions, resonant and coherent pion productions, with a good final state separation in the neutrino energy region of a few GeV. In this thesis, we focus on the study of charged current coherent pion production from muon neutrinos scattering on carbon, v[mu] 12C → [mu]-12C[pi]+, in the SciBooNE experiment. This is motivated by the fact that without measuring this component first, the precise determination of resonant pion production cross section can not be achieved since the contribution of coherent pion production in the region of small muon scattering angle is not small. Furthermore, the coherent process is particularly interesting because it is deeply rooted in fundamental physics via Adler's partially conserved axial-vector current theorem. We took data from June 2007 until August 2008, in both the neutrino and antineutrino beam. In total, 2.52 x 1020 protons on target were collected. We have performed a search for charged current coherent pion production by using SciBooNE's full neutrino data set, corresponding to 0.99 x 1020 protons on target. No evidence for coherent pion production is observed. We set 90% confidence level upper limits on the cross section ratio of charged current coherent pion production to the total charged current cross section at 0.67 x 10-2 at mean neutrino energy 1.1 GeV and 1.36 x 10-2 at mean neutrino energy 2.2 GeV. We reveal that the Rein-Sehgal model widely used in neutrino oscillation experiments breaks down at the neutrino energy region of a few GeV. This creates active controversies on the model of coherent pion production, and the understanding of coherent pion production is being progressed. In addition, future prospects of measurements of charged current single charged pion production in SciBooNE are discussed.

In this thesis, we present a study of neutral current ?0 production from muon neutrinos scattering on a polystyrene (C8H8) target in the SciBooNE experiment. All neutrino beam data corresponding to 0.99 × 1020 protons on target have been analyzed. We have measured the cross section ratio of the neutral current ?0 production to the total charge current interaction and the ?0 kinematic distribution such as momentum and direction. We obtain [7.7 ± 0.5(stat.) ± 0.5(sys.)] × 10-2 as the ratio of the neutral current neutral pion production to total charged current cross section; the mean energy of neutrinos producing detected neutral pions is 1.1 GeV. The result agrees with the Rein- Sehgal model, which is generally used for the Monte Carlo simulation by many neutrino oscillation experiments. We achieve less than 10 % uncertainty which is required for the next generation search for ?æ → ?e oscillation. The spectrum shape of the ?0 momentum and the distribution of the ?0 emitted angle agree with the prediction, which means that not only the Rein-Sehgal model but also the intra-nuclear interaction models describe our data well. We also measure the ratio of the neutral current coherent pion production to total charged current cross section to be (1.17 ± 0.23 ) × 10-2 based on the Rein and Sehgal model. The result gives the evidence for non-zero coherent pion production via neutral current interaction at the mean neutrino energy of 1.0 GeV.

A significant fraction of neutrino interactions observed in these experiments produce single charged pions. While single charged pion production has been measured on hydrocarbon and water, few precise measurements exist for heavier targets, and there are no high statistics measurements that directly compare pion production on different targets. This thesis measures differential cross sections of muon neutrino charged current single charged pion production with no other mesons in the final state in a neutrino beam with a mean energy of ~ 6 GeV. The pion production is studied on targets of scintillator, carbon, water, iron, and lead at MINERvA, a neutrino cross section experiment located in the NuMI beamline at Fermilab. These measured cross sections are differential in [mu]- and [pi]+ kinematics. A strong suppression of low Q2 and an enhancement of low T[Pi] are observed relative to commonly used neutrino interaction models in both the light and heavy nuclear targets. Incorporation of these observed effects in future neutrino oscillation experiments will improve their ability to measure energy of neutrino interactions, and therefore measure the parameters governing neutrino oscillations."--Page xii

Book excerpt: In this thesis the development and study of a method for a model-dependent measurement of the muon neutrino charged current (CC) single pion interaction's positive pion momentum spectrum is proposed. The measurement is part of the Tokai-to-Kamioka (T2K) experiment and was performed in Tokai at the near detector hall, using an event selection from a fine-grained detector (FGD) on a carbon target. The T2K neutrino beam has a peak energy of about 0.6 GeV, and the near detector is located 280 m downstream from the proton beam target. Data from 5.9 x10^20 protons on target was collected and used in a CC-inclusive and CC-exclusive event selection. The inclusive event selection contains about 25,000 CC muon neutrino events, and was subdivided into a single positively charged pion production channel (CC-1-pion) and a CC multi-pion interaction channel (CC-other). The official event selection, applied to both data and Monte Carlo (MC), is presented. Amongst the systematic errors involved in this event selection, the development of a novel detector systematic, created by the author of this thesis and dubbed the "hybrid analysis" is presented in detail. The analysis of published CC muon interaction data from deuterium bubble chamber experiments is presented in detail and used to tune a model of charged pion multiplicities. Utilizing this model, a systematic error on the number of charged pions produced in CC multi-pion events is characterized for the first time and implemented. The official T2K MC corresponding to the presented event selection is used extensively in the development, study and validation of a fitting method proposed to extract the a model- dependent measurement of the CC-1-pion differential cross section with respect to true positive pion momentum. The studies to date suggest tuning of input cross section model parameters may need to be re-evaluated to ensure representative validation tests, and that the fit method may need to include a regularization method.

The data were obtained using the Fermilab 15-foot Bubble Chamber, filled with a heavy Ne-H2 mixture and exposed to the Quadrupole Triplet neutrino beam produced by 800 GeV protons from the Tevatron. The average beam energy was 86 GeV. In a sample of 330000 frames, 1032 two-prong [nu]{sub {mu}} + {bar [nu]}{sub {mu}} charged current interactions were selected. The goal of this study was to investigate the low Q2 high {nu} region where the hadron dominance model can be tested. In this model, the vector and axial-vector parts of the weak hadronic current are dominated by the [rho] and a1 mesons respectively. Moreover, the Partially Conserved Axial Current (PCAC) hypothesis can be tested by studying the coherent production of single pions.

The charged current interaction rates (product of flux and cross section) are extracted by fitting the muon kinematics, with a precision of 6-15% for the energy dependent and 3% for the energy integrated analyses. We also extract CC inclusive interaction cross sections from the observed rates, with a precision of 10-30% for the energy dependent and 8% for the energy integrated analyses. This is the first measurement of the CC inclusive cross section on carbon around 1 GeV. These results can be used to convert previous SciBooNE cross section ratio measurements to absolute cross section values.

This dissertation presents a measurement of the ratio of CC?+ to CCQE cross-sections for muon neutrinos on mineral oil (CH2) in the MiniBooNE experiment. The measurement is presented here both with and without corrections for hadronic re-interactions in the target nucleus and is given as a function of neutrino energy in the range 0.4 GeV Esub?/sub 2.4 GeV. With more than 46,000 CC?sup+/sup events collected in MiniBooNE, and with a fractional uncertainty of roughly 11% in the region of highest statistics, this measurement represents a dramatic improvement in statistics and precision over previous CC?
