Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book focuses primarily on experimental and analytical methods developed over many years to characterize the deformation and fracture of brittle materials under dynamic loading conditions. The dynamic response of brittle materials is highly nonlinear and complex, with practical applications ranging from explosive excavation of rocks to the design of ceramic armor and the protection of spacecraft windows from meteor impacts. It provides a comprehensive exploration of the challenges and methodologies involved in impact experiments and computational modeling of brittle solids under shock and impact loading, making it essential reading for those seeking realistic solutions to blast and ballistic problems. For example, the book emphasizes the significance of validating numerical code solutions through simulations. This involves understanding and evaluating the impact of various factors such as appropriate boundary conditions, high-resolution finite element meshes, solution time steps, contact algorithms, interface modeling, artificial viscosity, erosion of elements, particle conversion, and model parameters on the accuracy of solutions. It selectively presents examples of modeling and simulations of ballistic problems drawn from the open literature. While numerous articles on the book's topic exist in the literature, this volume integrates key aspects of high strain rate impact experiments, modeling, and simulations of brittle failure in ceramics, rocks, oil shale, and cementitious materials across various stress and strain states. To the best of the authors' knowledge, no other compilation covers such a wide array of experimental techniques used in this field, particularly for ceramics, yet adaptable for other heterogeneous brittle solids. Despite the extensive literature on this subject, most impact experimental configurations have been limited to specific geometries and have not encompassed the broad range of techniques necessary to characterize and validate constitutive behaviors used in modern numerical codes. Many researchers and engineers are often unaware of the specialized experiments and models presented in international conference proceedings or technical presentations. This book addresses that gap by encompassing a broader range of unique impact experiments, constitutive and damage modeling, and computational simulations not found in any existing publication.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of solute additions on the deformation and fracture behavior of KCl bicrystals was investigated. This material exhibited a definite transition from brittle to ductile fracture, the brittle type being of an intergranular nature and the ductile a necked matrix failure. This transition temperature was about 175 C for the high purity specimens and 400 C for tilt misoriented calcium doped (100 ppm) bicrystals. Calcium doped twist boundary bicrystals showed intergranular brittle fracture at temperatures as high as 600 C, which was the highest test temperature examined. It was found that wavy glide rather than the planar type was a prerequisite for ductile behavior and that the role of the solute was to suppress the onset of wavy glide, thus elevating the transition temperature. The data also showed a greater propensity for grain boundary sliding in the doped material in the tests which were conducted above the transition temperature. (Author).

Book excerpt: The effects of non-uniform stress distributions on fracture strength were studied on four mate rials that exhibit brittle behavior; Wesgo AL995, Mykroy 750 and 1100 (ceramics) and Plexiglas (acrylic plastic). Analysis of the results of both notch tensile and bend tests on these materials indicate that fracture in ceramic materials can be explained by a maximum fracture stress concept provided that the inherent inhomogeneity of these materials is considered in the analysis. Weibull's statistical theory of fracture appears to be ap plicable to the analysis of inhomogeneity. The be havior of Plexiglas is similar to that previously observed for high strength metals. Studies of plastic flow in metallic flat notch tensile speci mens indicate that the distribution of the princi pal longitudinal strain across the notch section is related to the distribution of the longitudinal elastic stress raised to the power b, where b is primarily a function of the strain hardening ex ponent of the material. Also, Neuber's conclusion that K sub t represents the geometric mean of the true stress and true strain concentration factors in pure shear seems generally applicable to the plane stress tension case.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These volumes, 7 and 8, of Fracture Mechanics of Ceramics constitute the proceedings of an international symposium on the fracture mechanics of ceramic materials held at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, Virginia on June 19, 20 and 21, 1985. These proceedings constitute the fourth pair of volumes of a continuing series of conferences. The theme of this conference, as the previous three, focused on the mechanical behavior of ceramic materials in terms of the characteristics of cracks, particularly the roles which they assume in the fracture process. The 78 contributed papers by over 100 authors and co-authors represent the current state of the field. They address many of the theoretical and practical problems of interest to those concerned with brittle fracture. The program chairmen gratefully acknowledge the financial assistance for the Symposium provided by the EXXON Foundation, the Army Research Office, the Natio~al Science Foundation, and the Office of Naval Research. Without their support, this conference simply would not have been possible. The suggestions of Drs. J. C. Hurt, R. C. Pohanka, and L. Toth were particularly helpful in assuring the success of this symposium. Special appreciation is extended to Professor J. I. Robertson, C. P. Miles Professor of History. whose presentation following the banquet on the American Civil War was very well received by the audience. Finally, we wish to also thank our joint secretaries, especially Karen Snider, for their patience and help in finally bringing these proceedings to press.

This book represents a conscious effort on the part of the author to detail the "life" of a crack, from its inception, through its growth, to its culmination. The author is careful to define all key terms within the text, making this book an excellent reference for anyone working with brittle materials.

Book excerpt: These volumes, 3 and 4, of Fracture Mechanics of Ceramics con stitute the proceedings of an international symposium on the frac ture mechanics of ceramics held at the Pennsylvania State Univer sity, University Park, PA on July 27, 28, and 29, 1977. Volumes 1 and 2 were published previously as the proceedings of a sympo sium of the same name held July 11, 12, and 13, 1973, also at Penn State. All four volumes published to date concentrate on the fracture aspects of the mechanical behavior of brittle ceramics in terms of the characteristics of cracks. The program chairmen gratefully acknowledge the financial as sistance for the symposium provided by the Office of Naval Re search, the Energy Research and Development Administration, and the Army Research Office. Without their support the quality and mag nitude of this conference simply would not have been possible. Numerous individuals contributed to the success of the con ference, but unfortunately they cannot all be listed here. However the program chairmen would especially like to recognize the contri butions of Penn State Conference Coordinator, Mr. Ronald Avillion, whose expertise in planning and organization was indispensable; Dr. Fred R. Matson for his interesting after dinner speech; and Drs. A. M. Diness, J. C. Hurt, and D. W. Readey for their en couragement and valuable suggestions regarding the program. Finally, we wish to also thank our joint secretaries for the patience and help in bringing these proceedings to press.
