Book excerpt: Background/Objectives: According to the World Trade Organization data for 2013, China became world's largest trading nation and India became the 15th largest trading nation. Emerging economies gained a lot of momentum in world trade. This study analyses the trade flows of two of the emerging economies namely China and India with an objective to draw a comparison between the determinants of bilateral trade flows of the two nations using data for a period of 9 years (2004-2013).Methods/Statistical Analysis: To achieve the objective, gravity model has been applied on a panel dataset for the two countries. The data has been collected from International Monetary Fund (IMF), CEPII's Geodist database and United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). The study employs random effects panel regression model to establish the relationship between trade flows and different variables including distance, gross domestic product, per capital income, contiguity, common language and common colonizer. It compares the determinants of trade for India with China. Findings: The findings of the empirical analysis are in accordance with past literature indicating that India and China trade flows are mostly with geographically closer countries. Additionally, India's trade flows are with countries having higher GDP but with lower per capita income. China's trade is influenced by higher per capita income of the trading partner and common language. When crisis is introduced in the analysis, post crisis, common colony became an important influencer of trade for India. Applications/Improvements: This study helps in identifying the key determinants of India and China's trade flows. It also provides a pre and post crisis analysis of the trade partnerships which might have future implications for trade policy and trade relations for the two countries.

Book excerpt: This paper studies the relationship between the growth of China and India in world merchandise trade and Latin American and Caribbean commercial flows from two perspectives. First, the authors focus on the opportunity that China and India's markets have offered Latin American and Caribbean exporters during 2000-2004. Second, empirical analyses examine the partial correlation between Chinese and Indian bilateral trade flows and Latin American and Caribbean trade with third markets. Both analyses rely on the gravity model of international trade. Econometric estimations that control for the systematic correlation between expected bilateral trade volumes and the size of their regression errors, as well as importer and exporter fixed effects and year effects, provide consistent estimates of the relevant parameters for different groups of countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. Results suggest that the growth of the two Asian markets has produced large opportunities for Latin American and Caribbean exporters, which nevertheless have not been fully exploited. The evidence concerning the effects of Chinese and Indian trade with third markets is not robust, but there is little evidence of negative effects on Latin American and Caribbean exports of non-fuel merchandise. In general, China's and to a large extent India's growing presence in world trade has been good news for Latin America and the Caribbean, but some of the potential benefits remain unexploited.

Book excerpt: From 1992 to 2011, the total trade volume between the U.S. and China increased by 25 times, and China's share in U.S. total imports increased from 5% to 20%. However, the U.S.'s share in China's total imports dropped from 11% to 8% in the same period. In the major categories of U.S. exports to China, waste & scrap increased from 744 million dollars in 2000 to 7,562 million dollars in 2008, rising 916% times and becoming the no.1 product that the U.S exports to China. It is important to understand what explains these structural changes, and to ask whether the principle of comparative advantage determines the structure of U.S.-China bilateral trade. Interestingly, we find an "Anti-Comparative Advantage" puzzle: the U.S. exports less to China in sectors where it has greater comparative advantage, while China exports more to the U.S. in its sectors with greater comparative advantage. To further study this issue, we extend Eaton-Kortum model of bilateral trade to multiple sectors and test it empirically using US and China trade data. We find that after controlling for the importer's demand, trade costs and factor intensities, etc., comparative advantage cannot explain U.S.-China bilateral trade flows. The puzzle survives various robustness checks.

The aim of this paper is to examine the effects of tariff reduction by India and China on bilateral imports in light and heavy manufacturing sectors. The results are evaluated in terms of welfare, output, employment and the potential trade flows between India and China in CGE framework using the GTAP-model. GTAP database version 10, covering 141 countries/regions and 65 sectors, with a base year of 2014, have been used. Overall results show that India and China's trade relation has improved in last two decades, but still there is a lot of untapped potential to bring the welfare gains for both trading partners. This study concludes that deeper integration by tariff reduction on imports of light manufacturing and heavy manufacturing sectors between India and China may not be welfare enhancing for India, however there are substantial welfare gain for China. The study suggests that a well calculated and strategically negotiated tariff reduction in light and heavy manufacturing sectors may create a win-win situation for both partners. The study argues that China should offer a preferential market access to India for mutually beneficial and welfare enhancing engagements for both countries.

Especially in Hong Kong, Korea, Singapore, and Taiwan, exports increased dramatically both in absolute terms and as a percentage of GNP. In the 1980s, however, preferential trading arrangements (PTAs) began to emerge as significant factors affecting world trade. This volume contains thirteen papers that analyze the tensions between multilateral trading systems and preferential trade arrangements and the impact of these tensions on East Asia.
