Book excerpt: The Eucharist originated at the Last Supper of Jesus with his disciples. It is based on the prayer of thanksgiving that Jesus pronounced over the bread and wine at that meal. “Eucharist” means “thanksgiving”, “praise”, and “blessing”. The Church celebrates the Eucharist as a memorial of the death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ, which is more than a remembrance of the Last Supper of Jesus with his disciples. In the Eucharist the sacrifice of our redemption becomes present sacramentally. In the past, dogmatic theology has treated the meaning of the Eucharist while disregarding the form of its liturgical celebration, whereas liturgical studies have been content with only the latter. Yet the two cannot be separated, any more than liturgy and dogma or pastoral practice and doctrine can be understood without the other. The Church’s liturgy is not something external to Christian revelation, but rather, as Joseph Ratzinger said, “revelation accepted in faith and prayer”. In this work Helmut Hoping combines the approaches of dogmatic theology and liturgy while examining the Eucharist from a historical and systematic perspective. This new English translation of the second German edition of this major work, revised and expanded, includes a comparative analysis of the Second Eucharistic Prayer and a chapter on the theology of the words of institution.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study in the History of the Eucharist Public education was fostered that the people might be able to understand the mass The first public so 00 ea6h6rs of the Middle Ages were the parish priests who taught the peasant children the creed and the responses. In philosophy the conceptions of a miraculous universe were strengthened as theology was codified in harmony with popular belief.2 In literature the one theme of romance outside of war and love was the search for the grail. In art the illumination Of missals and the decoration of altars3 is a small thing compared with the fact that the very structure of the churches, the archi tecture itself, was determined by the early manner of cele bration of the Lord's Supper.4 The table about which the little circle sat at first was restricted for the few as the membership increased, and then became an altar for the one. The simple Roman dwelling transformed its atrium, ales and tablinum into the nave, transept and choir of the medimval cathedral. The gorgeous spectacle af the mass succeeded to the simple communion of the earliest days, and the few pos sessions for the primitive ceremony grew into the splendid equipment of the richest altars in Europe. Book excerpt: "This collection of essays covers fundamental aspects of the Eucharist, from the Biblical notion of 'memorial' to the issues of intercommunion and the relationship between the Eucharist and the Church. The chapters give evidence of increasing theological convergence in the thinking of contemporary Eastern and Western theologians on the Eucharist. This consensus is the result of developments in Biblical studies, our increasing knowledge of the Fathers, and the findings of liturgical studies and the historical study of the Church's liturgy in the East and the West." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the end of the fifteenth century, the Eucharist had come to encompass theology, liturgy, art, architecture, and music. In the sixteenth century, each of these dimensions was questioned, challenged, rethought, as western European Christians divided over their central act of worship. This volume offers an introduction to early modern thinking on the Eucharist—as theology, as Christology, as a moment of human and divine communion, as that which the faithful do, as taking place, and as visible and audible. The scholars gathered in this volume speak from a range of disciplines—liturgics, history, history of art, history of theology, philosophy, musicology, and literary theory. The volume thus also brings different methods and approaches, as well as confessional orientations to a consideration of the Eucharist in the Reformation. Contributors include: Gary Macy, Volker Leppin, Carrie Euler, Nicholas Thompson, Nicholas Wolterstorff, John D. Rempel, James F. Turrell, Robert J. Daly, Isabelle Brian, Thomas Schattauer, Raymond A. Mentzer, Michele Zelinsky Hanson, Jaime Lara, Andrew Spicer, Achim Timmermann, Birgit Ulrike Münch, Andreas Gormans, Alexander J. Fisher, Regina M. Schwartz, and Christopher Wild.
