Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Computer Science - Software, , course: Image Processing, language: English, abstract: In this thesis various methods for lossless compression of source image data are analyzed and discussed. The main focus in this work is lossless compression algorithms based on context modeling using tree structure. We are going to compare CALIC, GCT-I algorithms to the JPEG2000 standard algorithm which will be considered the reference of comparison. This work includes research on how to modify CALIC algorithm in continuous-tone mode by truncating tails of the error histogram which may lead to improve CALIC compression performance. Also, we are going to propose a modification to CALIC in binary mode by eliminating error feedback mechanism. As when any pixel to be encoded has a different grey level than any of the neighboring pixels, CALIC triggers an escape sequence that switches the algorithm from binary mode to continuous-tone mode. Which means in this case the pixel will be treated as if it was in continuous-tone region. This minor modification should improve CALIC performance in binary images. Finally, we are going to discuss the GCT-I on medical images and compare results to the JPEG2000 standard.

Book excerpt: Although it's true that image compression research is a mature field, continued improvements in computing power and image representation tools keep the field spry. Faster processors enable previously intractable compression algorithms and schemes, and certainly the demand for highly portable high-quality images will not abate. Document and Image Compression highlights the current state of the field along with the most probable and promising future research directions for image coding. Organized into three broad sections, the book examines the currently available techniques, future directions, and techniques for specific classes of images. It begins with an introduction to multiresolution image representation, advanced coding and modeling techniques, and the basics of perceptual image coding. This leads to discussions of the JPEG 2000 and JPEG-LS standards, lossless coding, and fractal image compression. New directions are highlighted that involve image coding and representation paradigms beyond the wavelet-based framework, the use of redundant dictionaries, the distributed source coding paradigm, and novel data-hiding techniques. The book concludes with techniques developed for classes of images where the general-purpose algorithms fail, such as for binary images and shapes, compound documents, remote sensing images, medical images, and VLSI layout image data. Contributed by international experts, Document and Image Compression gathers the latest and most important developments in image coding into a single, convenient, and authoritative source.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medical imaging is a powerful and useful tool radiologists and consultants, allowing them to improve and facilitate their diagnosis. Worldwide, X-ray images represent 60% of the total amount of radiological imagfes, the remaining consists of more newly developed images modalities such as Computed Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Ultrasiund (US), Positron Emission Tomography (PET), Single Photon Emission Computerized Tomography (SPECT), Nuclear Medicine (NM), and Digital Substraction Angiography (DSA). Image communication system foe medical images have bandwith and image size constrain that reseult in time-consuming transmission of uncompressed raw image data. thus image compression is a key factor to improve transmission spped and storage, but it risks losing relevant medical information. The radiology standard Digital Imaging and Communication in Medicine (DICOM3) provides rules for compression using lossless Joint Photographic Expert Group (JPEG) methods. However, at the moment there are no rules for acceptance of lossy compression in medical imaging and it is an ectremely subjective decision. Acceptable levels of compression should never compromise diagnostic information. Wavelet technology has emerged as a promising compression ratio while maintaining an acceptable fidelity of image quality. the objective of this thesis is to evaluate a variety of wavelet filters using Wavelet toolbox for selecting the best wavelet filter to be used in compressing and decompressing selected medical images. Two-dimensional wavelet decomposition, quantization and reconstruction using several families of filter banks were applied to a set of medical images. Furthermore, the technique of quantifying the effect of wavelet compression using low and high contrast test object on digitized radiographic chest and abdomen images and Computed Tomography (CT) images is discussed. A test trip simulating low and high contrast objects was constructed using constructed using Visual Basic programmning environment. Lurawave Smart Compression software was used to compress and reconstruct selected images with different compression ratios. Ten observes, from he Department of Radiology at the University on Malaya Medical Center (UMMC) evaluated the results. Objective and subjective methods were used for evaluating our results, which include Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR), Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) analysis and rank sum test. The result show that no specific wavelet filter perform uniformly better than others except for the case of Daubechies and bi-orthogonal filters, which are perhaps, the best wavelet filters for selected medical images. These filters, give very small (= zero) Maximum Absolute Error (MAE). These wavelet filters were able to produce perfect reconstruction, even if the level of wavelet decomposition increase. Using LuraWave Smart Compression software, the result show that PSNR which represent the quality of reconsructed images, was between 36 to 42 dB and 28 to 36 dB for chest and abdomen images respectively. All these images were compressed and decompressed up to 500 : 1. For CT images the PSNR was between 36 to 57 dB for chest image, 34 to 52 dB for abdomen images and 40 to 57 dB for CT brain images. All these images were compressed and decompressed up to 30 : 1 compression ratio. The ROC analysis, which represent the diagnostic quality of digitized chest X-ray images, indicated that compression ratio 100 : 1 is still acceptable for digitized chest and abdomen X-ray image, whereas for CT images, the result indicated that compression ratio 30 : 1 is acceptable for chest and abdomen images and 20 : 1 for brain image. The investigations using quantitative low and high contrast objects module serving as a references for each clinical image indicated that clinical images should be compressed according to their diagnostic content. Certain images can receive greater rates of compression than others and still retain all diagnostic information. The use of image compression (lossy compression) make Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) a more economically viable alternativeto analog film-based system by reducing the bite sized required to store and represent images while maintaining relevant diagnostic information. In this thesis, the results of the statistical tests showed thet there was no significant difference between the original and reconstructed images for compression rations up to 20 : 1 for Ct images (brain, chest and abdomen) and 50 : 1 for digitized X-ray images (Chest and abdomen), at a 95% of confidence level. Moreover, the results of ROC analysis suggested that compression ratios using LuraWave Smart Compression software for digitized X-ray images might be as high as = 100 : 1, without adverse effect on clinical diagnostic performance.

Book excerpt: Medical image compression addresses the issues of larger storage and faster transmission requirements. Contextual compression of Ultrasound (US) medical images aims at compressing the diagnostically important region, region of interest (RoI), of an image with supreme quality as compared to rather unimportant area i.e. the background. Thus, the RoI area is compressed with less compression ratio and the background with the highest possible compression ratio in order to get better overall compression performance. As a part of contextual compression technique four compression algorithms viz. JPEG coding, Wavelet Transform coding, JPEG 2000 coding and the SPIHT coding algorithms have been implemented in the present work. These algorithms have been implemented using MATLAB, Image Processing and Wavelet toolbox, in particular. A detailed analysis on the basis of parameters like mean square error (MSE), peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) and correlation coefficient (CoC) has been carried out to evaluate these algorithms.

Book excerpt: An exciting new development has taken place in the digital era that has captured the imagination and talent of researchers around the globe - wavelet image compression. This technology has deep roots in theories of vision, and promises performance improvements over all other compression methods, such as those based on Fourier transforms, vectors quantizers, fractals, neural nets, and many others. It is this revolutionary new technology that is presented in Wavelet Image and Video Compression, in a form that is accessible to the largest audience possible. Wavelet Image and Video Compression is divided into four parts. Part I, Background Material, introduces the basic mathematical structures that underly image compression algorithms with the intention of providing an easy introduction to the mathematical concepts that are prerequisites for the remainder of the book. It explains such topics as change of bases, scalar and vector quantization, bit allocation and rate-distortion theory, entropy coding, the discrete-cosine transform, wavelet filters and other related topics. Part II, Still Image Coding, presents a spectrum of wavelet still image coding techniques. Part III, Special Topics in Still Image Coding, provides a variety of example coding schemes with a special flavor in either approach or application domain. Part IV, Video Coding, examines wavelet and pyramidal coding techniques for video data. Wavelet Image and Video Compression serves as an excellent reference and may be used as a text for advanced courses covering the subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to the constrained bandwidth and storage capacity, medical images must be compressed before transmission and storage most of the time. However, the compression will reduce the image fidelity, especially when the image is compressed at low bit rate, which cannot be tolerated in medical field. In this book, the compression performance of the newer JPEG2000 and the conventional JPEG is compared. Image quality are measured both objectively and subjectively. Generally, there are two kind of compression - lossless and lossy. Here, the controversial lossy compression is used although lossless compression has always been preferred in telemedicine. The results presented in this book for the lossy compression have been quite promising. Four types of medical images are used in this study - X-ray, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound and computed tomography (CT). Overall, the study shows convincing results where by up to a certain degree without significant loss in image quality, lossy compression is acceptable from the medical perspective.
