Book excerpt: "This monograph explores the relationship between Islam and Marxism in the Netherlands East Indies (NEI) and Indonesia from the publication of the first Communist periodical in 1915 to the beginning of the anti-communist massacres of 1965-66. It explores various permutations of how Muslim identity and Marxist analytical frameworks coexisted in the minds of Indonesian nationalists, as well as how individuals' Islamic faith and ethics shaped their willingness to employ Marxist ideas. Such confluences have long been obscured by state-driven narratives which demonize Marxism and posit the mutual exclusivity of Islam and Marxism. By examining Indonesian-language print culture, including newspapers, books, pamphlets, memoirs, letters, novels, plays, and poetry, I show how deeply embedded confluences of Islam and Marxism were in the Indonesian nationalist project, even at its highest levels. Ultimately, I argue that these confluences were the product of Indonesian participation in broader networks of intellectual exchange across Asia, Europe, and the Middle East, and that such confluences were the result of Indonesians "translating" the world to Indonesia, a project of creative adaptation ambitious in both its scope and depth"--

Assuming no prior knowledge of grammatical terminology, it explains each aspect of Spanish grammar in clear and simple terms, provides a wealth of glossed examples to illustrate them, and helps students to put their learning into practice through a range of fun and engaging exercises. Clearly organized into thirty units, each covering a different aspect of the grammar, the book functions both as an essential reference guide and a comprehensive workbook. Individual topics can be looked up via a user-friendly cross-referencing system, and concise definitions are provided in a useful glossary of grammatical terms. The exercises, which include paired and group activities, are suitable for both classroom use and self-study. Each unit is split into two levels, basic and intermediate, making this grammar the perfect accompaniment to any first or second year undergraduate course.

In this powerful book, David Campos, Rocio Delgado, and Mary Esther Soto Huerta provide guidance and resources to help teachers communicate and collaborate with the families of Latino ELLs. Reaching Out to Latino Families of English Language Learners includes practical tips and tools, including reproducible form letters in English and Spanish, that can help teachers solicit valuable information about students from their families, extend families' knowledge of how U.S. schools operate, and provide families with ideas for helping students with their schoolwork at home. In addition, the authors * Offer information on aspects of Latino culture relevant to student learning; * Provide lists of websites and books on Latino culture and of Latino-themed children's books for use with students; and * Outline a framework that educators can use to create a "campus task force" for engaging Latino families in student learning. The more families of Latino ELLs learn about the curriculum, policies, and procedures of their children's schools, the more comfortable they will be collaborating with teachers. Likewise, the more educators learn about their students' backgrounds, the better able they will be to help them in the classroom. This complete resource will enable educators to work diligently and harmoniously with students' families in the service of what really matters: the academic success of Latino students.

Family–School Success (FSS) focuses on improving children's behavior and academic performance by strengthening parent–child, teacher–student, and family–school relationships. Detailed guidelines are provided for implementing FSS with parent groups or individual families, including how to involve children in groups and collaborate with teachers. The authors discuss ways to deliver FSS effectively in school- and clinic-based settings, private practice, and primary care. In a convenient large-size format, the book features dozens of reproducible parent handouts and worksheets, assessment tools, and fidelity checklists, which can also be downloaded and printed. This book is in The Guilford Practical Intervention in the Schools Series, edited by Sandra M. Chafouleas.

Book excerpt: This edited volume demonstrates how an educational linguistics approach to inquiry is well positioned to identify, examine, and theorize the language and literacy dimensions of refugee-background learners’ experiences. Contributions (from junior and senior scholars) explore and interrogate the policies, practices and ideologies of language and literacy in formal and informal educational settings as well as their implications for teaching and learning. Chapters in this collection will inform advances in the research base, future innovations in pedagogy, the professional development of teachers, and the educational opportunities that are made available to refugee-background children, youth and adults. The work showcased here will be of particular interest to teachers and teacher educators committed to inclusion, equity, and diversity; those developing curriculum and/or assessment; and researchers interested in the relationship between language practice, language policy and refugee education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Student Named Hijo has been recognized for depicting a new Indonesian youth culture that has adopted Western cultural and lingual facets. By contrasting traditional Javanese and Dutch cultural values, the author advocated a view that the two are incompatible. This includes love, described in the novel as something only those with a Dutch education would attempt to find; the traditional view being that marriage is to be used for social mobility. Rejected for publication by Balai Pustaka--the Dutch controlled publishing house, the work is now considered a classic.

There are many books describing the how-to of school crisis response, but few describe the thoughts and emotions to help guide the application of skills learned. This book provides narratives about traumatic events to supplement concepts with lessons from actual crises. The author documents the perspective of a team leader, vividly illustrating real events to confront the challenges, decisions, and problem-solving demanded to effectively stabilize emotional reactions, ameliorate trauma, and support resilience and recovery. While encouraging reflection, educating, and strengthening new and experienced responders, this book celebrates the vital work of school psychologists, counselors, administrators, teachers, social workers, and nurses who provide extraordinary service under the most difficult circumstances. It combines an intellectual, evidence-based "in the head" understanding of how to do crisis response with an emotional, empathetic "in the heart" understanding of how it feels to do it.

Book excerpt: Learning and Not Learning in the Heritage Language Classroom, a critical ethnography, describes the first year of a teacher-founded charter high school and presents a case-study of compulsory Spanish heritage language instruction with two Spanish-language teachers, one English dominant and the other Spanish dominant. The study follows the same cohort of Mexican-origin students to their humanities-English class, bringing into focus what works and what does not with this group of learners. Unlike many Spanish heritage language studies, the students in this book did not choose to take part in Spanish class and thus provide unusually raw feedback on their teachers and classes. The engagement and resistance of these students suggests pedagogical directions for engaging Spanish heritage language learners. The book will be of interest to scholars, administrators, students and teachers involved in the delivery and assessment of heritage language classes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whenever children are brought into group settings, there is potential for the spread of dangerous disease. To prevent this, the California School Immunization Law requires that children receive a series of immunizations before entry to schools or child care programs, including a 3-dose hepatitis B series. This handbook explains these requirements and the responsibilities they entail for schools, child care centers, and family child care homes. It provides a reference on immunization requirements and procedures and disease reporting regulations. Includes chapters on transferring and storing immunization records, and computerizing immunization records.
