Download or read book Morphological Structure in Language Processing written by R. Harald Baayen and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-07-20 with total page 533 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together a series of studies of morphological processing in Germanic (English, German, Dutch), Romance (French, Italian), and Slavic (Polish, Serbian) languages. The question of how morphologically complex words are organized and processed in the mental lexicon is addressed from different theoretical perspectives (single and dual route models), for different modalities (auditory and visual comprehension, writing), and for language development. Experimental work is reported, as well as computational and statistical modeling. Thus, this volume provides a useful overview of the range of issues currently attracting reseach at the intersection of morphology and psycholinguistics.

In addition to the main conference, FDSL 7 saw the first special Workshop on Slavic Phonology initiated by Tobias Scheer. Some of the papers presented at that workshop are included in this volume as well. The analyses published in this volume address the following Slavic languages: Bulgarian, Czech, Macedonian, Old Church Slavonic, Polish, Russian, Serbian and Serbo-Croatian. FDSL - the European forum for the formal description of Slavic languages - was called into being in 1995. The FDSL-conferences take place biannually in Leipzig and Potsdam.

Book excerpt: By integrating novel developments in both contact linguistics and morphological theory, this volume pursues the topic of borrowed morphology by recourse to sophisticated theoretical and methodological accounts. The authors address fundamental issues, such as the alleged universal dispreference for morphological borrowing and its effects on morphosyntactic complexity, and corroborate their analyses with strong cross-linguistic evidence.

Book Synopsis The Grammar of Words: An Introduction to Linguistic Morphology by : Geert Booij
Download or read book The Grammar of Words: An Introduction to Linguistic Morphology written by Geert Booij and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2007-07-05 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geert Booij's popular textbook examines how words are formed, compounded, and inflected in different languages. It shows how, when, and why to use methods of morphological analysis and explains how morphology relates to syntax, phonology, and semantics. The author considers the universal characteristics of morphology and how these are reflected in the workings of mind. The revised edition has been revised and updated throughout; it has a full glossary and a new chapter on the field's most notorious problem: the status of the word. 'The Grammar of Words by Geert Booij covers a broad range of topics from structural questions to psycholinguistic issues and problems of language change. This introduction to morphology is thorough and accessible and, like other works by this renowned author, especially strong at showing the significance of empirical facts for theoretical reasoning.' Ingo Plag, University of Siegen 'A book that is fully comprehensive in its coverage as well as exemplary in its clarity, written by one of the major scholars of contemporary lexical theory.' Sergio Scalise, University of Bologna
Book Synopsis Aspects of the Theory of Morphology by : Igor Mel'cuk
Download or read book Aspects of the Theory of Morphology written by Igor Mel'cuk and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2008-08-22 with total page 633 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is dedicated to linguistic morphology and it contains a sketch of a complete morphological theory, centered around a discussion of fundamental concepts such as morph vs. morpheme, inflectional category, voice, grammatical case, agreement vs. government, suppletion, relationships between linguistic signs, etc.: the hottest issues in modern linguistics! The book introduces rigorous and clear concepts necessary to describe morphological phenomena of natural languages. Among other things, it offers logical calculi of possible grammemes in a given category. The presentation is developed in a typological perspective, so that linguistic data from a large variety of languages are described and analyzed (about 100 typologically very different languages). The main method is deductive: the concepts proposed in Aspects of the Theory of Morphology are based on a small set of indefinibilia and each concept is defined in terms of these indefinibilia and/or other concepts defined previously; as a result, logical calculi can be constructed (similar to Mendeleev's Periodical Table of Elements in chemistry). Then the concept is applied to the actual linguistic data to demonstrate its validity and advantages. Thus, Aspects of the Theory of Morphology combines metalinguistic endeavor (a system of concepts for morphology) with typological and descriptive orientation. It reaches out to all students of language, including the border fields and applications.
