The Decision Theory Method, as its name indicates, is based on the principles of statistical decision theory. This method in conjunction with the Internal Covering Theory, automatically generates a set of interval complexes which act as 2-D filters that detect texture features in the scene of analysis. The versatility of this method to deal with various problems of visual texture, such as scene segmentation using textural information, extraction of texture borders, discrimination/recognition of both spatially and chromatically textured scenes, etc. is demonstrated. A model is proposed that views the pixels of a digitized textural scene as a two- way seasonal time series. Based on this model, a method is developed for synthesis of natural looking textures. This method possesses a desirable quality that the parameters needed for the synthesis are derived from the analysis of parent'' texture, i.e., the texture to be imitated. Extending the concepts of two-dimensional formal grammars, known as array grammars, multilevel array grammars'' are introduced. These are shown capable of generating complex texture scenes, specifically brickwall-type'' texture, that is, those textures which are perceived at many levels and at each level, they can be either structural or statistical. A way of specifying these grammars for texture scenes in real cases, with the help of interval complexes, '' is also indicated. (96 references) (auth).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Texture analysis is one of the fundamental aspects of human vision by which we discriminate between surfaces and objects. In a similar manner, computer vision can take advantage of the cues provided by surface texture to distinguish and recognize objects. In computer vision, texture analysis may be used alone or in combination with other sensed features (e.g. color, shape, or motion) to perform the task of recognition. Either way, it is a feature of paramount importance and boasts a tremendous body of work in terms of both research and applications.Currently, the main approaches to texture analysis must be sought out through a variety of research papers. This collection of chapters brings together in one handy volume the major topics of importance, and categorizes the various techniques into comprehensible concepts. The methods covered will not only be relevant to those working in computer vision, but will also be of benefit to the computer graphics, psychophysics, and pattern recognition communities, academic or industrial./a

Book excerpt: A syntactic model for the generation of structured texture and for the discrimination of textures is proposed. A texture pattern is first divided into fixed-size windows. Windows belonging to the same texture pattern are then characterized by a tree grammar. This tree grammar is used for synthesis as well as discrimination. If it is considered necessary, distortion or noise is introduced by using stochastic tree grammars. Finally, a set of error-correcting tree automata is used as a texture discriminator. Illustrative examples for texture synthesis and discrimination are presented. (Author).

Book excerpt: The very significant advances in computer vision and pattern recognition and their applications in the last few years reflect the strong and growing interest in the field as well as the many opportunities and challenges it offers. The second edition of this handbook represents both the latest progress and updated knowledge in this dynamic field. The applications and technological issues are particularly emphasized in this edition to reflect the wide applicability of the field in many practical problems. To keep the book in a single volume, it is not possible to retain all chapters of the first edition. However, the chapters of both editions are well written for permanent reference.

Book excerpt: The major goals of texture research in computer vision are to understand, model, and process texture and, ultimately, to simulate the human visual learning process using computer technologies. In the last decade, artificial intelligence has been revolutionized by machine learning and big data approaches, outperforming human prediction on a wide range of problems. In particular, deep learning convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are particularly well suited to texture analysis. This volume presents important branches of texture analysis methods which find a proper application in AI-based medical image analysis. This book: Discusses first-order, second-order statistical methods, local binary pattern (LBP) methods, and filter bank-based methods Covers spatial frequency-based methods, Fourier analysis, Markov random fields, Gabor filters, and Hough transformation Describes advanced textural methods based on DL as well as BD and advanced applications of texture to medial image segmentation Is aimed at researchers, academics, and advanced students in biomedical engineering, image analysis, cognitive science, and computer science and engineering This is an essential reference for those looking to advance their understanding in this applied and emergent field.

The potential areas of application include biomedical image analysis, industrial inspection, analysis of satellite or aerial imagery, content-based retrieval from image databases, document analysis, biometric person authentication, scene analysis for robot navigation, texture synthesis for computer graphics and animation, and image coding. d104ure analysis has been a topic of intensive research for over three decades, but the progress has been very slow.A workshop on ?d104ure Analysis in Machine Vision? was held at the University of Oulu, Finland, in 1999, providing a forum for presenting recent research results and for discussing how to make progress in order to increase the usefulness of texture in practical applications. This book contains extended and revised versions of the papers presented at the workshop. The first part of the book deals with texture analysis methodology, while the second part covers various applications. The book gives a unique view of different approaches and applications of texture analysis. It should be of great interest both to researchers of machine vision and to practitioners in various application areas.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Computer Science - Applied, grade: 1,0, RWTH Aachen University (Visual Computing Institute), language: English, abstract: The goal of this thesis is to provide a texture generation approach that works on cellular textures and enables structural modifications when generating a new output exemplar. In the field of computer graphics, two-dimensional textures are an efficient tool to make a virtual scene richer in detail and therefore visually more appealing. Consequently, the perceived quality of a rendered image highly depends on the quality of the used textures. Unfortunately, creating textures by hand is a time-consuming task, which in extreme cases can only be performed by professional artists. On the other hand, the use of real photographs often requires post-processing steps, e.g. to make them tileable so that there are no visual transitions between multiple texture copies covering a large surface. Approaches exist that automatically create new texture variants with different sizes based on a given input sample. However, most of these methods focus on generating output textures that are as similar to the original input as possible, while not allowing for further modifications.

Book excerpt: The excellently received call for papers of the 13th Scandinavian Conference on Image Analysis, June 29-July 2 (SCIA 2003) resulted in the selected articles of this proceedings. Additionally the volume also contains invited contributions from - Ivar Austvoll, Stavanger University College (NO), - Lars B? a? ath, Halmstad University (SE), - Ewert Bengtsson, Uppsala University (SE), - Rasmus Larsen, Technical University of Denmark (DK), - Jussi Parkkinen, University of Joensuu (FI), - Pietro Perona, California Institute of Technology (US) which brings the total number of articles to 152. The theme of the papers are dominated by the categories - Feature extraction - Depth and surface - Medical image processing - Shape analysis - Segmentation and spatial grouping - Coding and representation - Motion analysis - Texture analysis - Color analysis - Indexing and categorization which also represent the topical groupings of this book. The particularly strong response to the feature extraction, depth and surface, and medical image processing themes makes us believe that these areas are c- rently expansive, partly because of the rich set of problems which remain to be addressed.
