Book excerpt: Life among the Indians Young Frances Slocum was one of a family of peaceful Quakers from the Wyoming Valley, but latterly living in Lenape, Pennsylvania when, in 1778, aged just five years old, she was abducted by a raiding party of Miami Indians and carried away into captivity. She became Maconaquah-the Little Bear-and she was destined to spend the rest of her life living as an Indian. It was nearly sixty years before her brothers finally located her on an Indian Reservation near Peru, Indiana and by that time she had been so totally integrated into tribal life, including having been married twice giving birth to four children, that a return to life as a 'white' American woman was impossible; she lived out her life in Indiana dying at the age of 75 years. The fascinating story of 'the lost sister' is another iconic tale of the struggles of women in the emergent American nation and makes riveting reading. Available in softcover and hardcover with dustjacket.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biography of Frances Slocum: The Lost Sister of Wyoming; A Complete Narrative of Her Captivity and Wanderings Among the Indians Another visit to Indiana to confer with her Indian descendants, learn their traditions, and examine relics which once belonged to her, was found necessary. The visit was made in June, 1890, and several days were pleasantly and profitably spent among the remnants of the Great Miami tribe in the upper valley of the Wabash, when I returned with more valuable and interesting information. Members of the Slocum family, when apprised of the undertaking, at once evinced a deep interest in the work, and promptly placed whatever information they possessed relating to Frances, at my disposal. Her Indian descendants, when informed of what was contemplated, also became enthusiastic over the enterprize, and freely imparted what they remembered of the white woman, whose memory they seem to cherish with a warmth of affection that is remarkable. To the following gentlemen I desire to return my acknowledgments for valuable information and assistance: Mr. George Slocum Bennett, Rev. Horace Edwin Hajden, and Dr. F. C. Johnson, Wilkes-Barre, Pa.; Dr. Charles E. Slocum, Defiance, Ohio; Mr. James Slocum, Brownsville, Pa.; Hon. Horace P. Biddle, Logansport, Indiana; J. B. Fulwiler, Esq., and W. W. Lockwood, Esq., Peru, Indiana; Rev. Peter Bendy and Mr. Gabriel Godfroy, Reserve, Indiana. A bibliography of the authorities consulted is also given at the close of the volume. There is nothing in the annals of Indian history more pathetic and impressive than the story of the captivity, life, wanderings and death of Frances Slocum; and in her remarkable history there is much to interest the ethnologist, because of the peculiar developments which followed her association with the Indians, the loss of her mother tongue, and the tenacity with which she clung to the strange people with whom her lot was cast. In the preparation of this book no claims are made of absolute accuracy or literary polish. It has proved a laborious task to arrange the narrative, on account of the many contradictory details, in something like consecutive order; and if I have succeeded in placing new and valuable matter within easy reach of those who are interested in the melancholy story, I will feel that my labor of love has not been wholly in vain. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Frances Slocum: The Lost Sister of Wyoming It is with a feeling of great reluctance that I commence this sad tale of woe and sorrow which befell an ancestor of my mother in Revolutionary times. My pen is not that of a ready writer, and in the making of books, of which Holy Writ tells us "there is no end," I have until now been guiltless. My only apology is that so many of my mother's family have gone to the great beyond. The youngest daughter of our grandfather, who, in her girlhood, visited the "lost sister," has recently passed away, and the last tie is broken connecting us with those who personally knew and appreciated the long-lost Frances. I find myself almost alone among those who have heard her story from our grandfather. Several accounts have been written of the abduction and captivity of Frances Slocum, by different historians of Wyoming, as a history of our valley would not be complete without the twice-told tale of this sad tragedy. Book excerpt: The Slocum family of Northeastern Pennsylvania are the best of the white settlers, peace-loving Quakers who believe that the Indians hold the Light of God inside. It is from this good-hearted family that Frances is abducted during the Revolutionary war. As the child's terror subsides, she is slowly drawn into the sacred work and beliefs of her adoptive mother and of all the women of these Eastern tribes. Frances becomes Maconakwa, the Little Bear Woman of the Miami Indians. Then, long after the Indians are beaten and their last hope, Tecumseh, is killed, the Slocums hear word of their long-lost daughter and head out to Indiana to meet their beloved Frances. But for Maconakwa, it is a moment of truth, the test of whether her heart is truly a red one.

They prepared an excellent dinner of fried venison, potatoes, shortcake, and coffee. Their cups and saucers were small, and they put three or four tablespoonfuls of maple sugar in a cup. They were told our way is not to use so much sugar. They seemed very anxious to please, and would often ask, 'is that right?' The eldest daughter waited on the table, while her mother sat at the table and ate with her white relations. After dinner they washed the dishes and replaced them upon the shelves, and then swept the floor. We were surprised at these evidences of civilization, and on asking our aunt why they did these things, she made answer that her mother used to do so, and she had always done it, and taught it to her daughters. It was, therefore, a uniform rule in her house to wipe the dust from the dishes when they were put upon the table, and when the meal was concluded to wash and return them to the cupboard, and then to sweep the room. "In the afternoon all left but Mr. Slocum, his daughters and Miller; the last remained till near night, when he returned. We strolled over the premises, and visited the burying ground. They raise a pole over the grave f1fteen or twenty feet high, with a white cloth at the top, which remains until destroyed by time. The premises showed great skill and industry for savage life, and no little order and attention to comfort in its arrangements. The house was a double hut. A neighboring squaw came in to help do the work, and the Indian daughters kept close to their white cousins, and talked with them incessantly. They supposed candles would be wanted, and to meet the emergency, the squaw melted some tallow, twisted wicking on a stick, and with a spoon poured the tallow down the wicks until...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indian Removal was a process both physical and symbolic, accomplished not only at gunpoint but also through language. In the Midwest, white settlers came to speak and write of Indians in the past tense, even though they were still present. Winning the West with Words explores the ways nineteenth-century Anglo-Americans used language, rhetoric, and narrative to claim cultural ownership of the region that comprises present-day Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. Historian James Joseph Buss borrows from literary studies, geography, and anthropology to examine images of stalwart pioneers and vanished Indians used by American settlers in portraying an empty landscape in which they established farms, towns, and “civilized” governments. He demonstrates how this now-familiar narrative came to replace a more complicated history of cooperation, adaptation, and violence between peoples of different cultures. Buss scrutinizes a wide range of sources—travel journals, captivity narratives, treaty council ceremonies, settler petitions, artistic representations, newspaper editorials, late-nineteenth-century county histories, and public celebrations such as regional fairs and centennial pageants and parades—to show how white Americans used language, metaphor, and imagery to accomplish the symbolic removal of Native peoples from the region south of the Great Lakes. Ultimately, he concludes that the popular image of the white yeoman pioneer was employed to support powerful narratives about westward expansion, American democracy, and unlimited national progress. Buss probes beneath this narrative of conquest to show the ways Indians, far from being passive, participated in shaping historical memory—and often used Anglo-Americans’ own words to subvert removal attempts. By grounding his study in place rather than focusing on a single group of people, Buss goes beyond the conventional uses of history, giving readers a new understanding not just of the history of the Midwest but of the power of creation narratives.
