Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This story comes to us from the dunes of Jylland in Denmark, but it begins in Spain, where a young couple were blissfully happy. The only thing missing to make their happiness complete was a child, but their king sent them as emissaries to the imperial court in Russia and they were forced to leave their country. On boarding the boat, little did they know that their story would go no further than the dunes of Jylland and that another would begin here... Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) was a Danish author, poet and artist. Celebrated for children’s literature, his most cherished fairy tales include "The Emperor's New Clothes", "The Little Mermaid", "The Nightingale", "The Steadfast Tin Soldier", "The Snow Queen", "The Ugly Duckling" and "The Little Match Girl". His books have been translated into every living language, and today there is no child or adult that has not met Andersen's whimsical characters. His fairy tales have been adapted to stage and screen countless times, most notably by Disney with the animated films "The Little Mermaid" in 1989 and "Frozen", which is loosely based on "The Snow Queen", in 2013. Thanks to Andersen's contribution to children's literature, his birth date, April 2, is celebrated as International Children's Book Day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sand Dune Pony is the story of a boy named Pete and a wild mustang pony set in what is now Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado. At the center of the story is a sinister individual who is seemingly dedicated to causing random harm. Pete and an old cowboy by the name of Hatsy get to the bottom of the mystery as they come across the remains of long-dead humans and the bodies of slain animals. The recurrent themes of the books in the Wilderness Mystery Series are natural phenomena—caves, canyons, mountains, sand dunes, and forests—and a sense of the past as seen through archaeology. In many of the narratives, events of long ago are seen to have left traces of their passing. Notwithstanding the fact that the books were written in the 1950s, the progressive Franklin Folsom (alias Troy Nesbit) had refreshing views of women, Native Americans, and the environment, and he was prescient in having his characters often oppose corporate and government efforts to develop wilderness areas.

Book excerpt: A sweeping, multifaceted tale of a young Native American pulled between the cherished traditions of a heritage on the brink of extinction and an encroaching white culture, Gardens in the Dunes is the powerful story of one woman’s quest to reconcile two worlds that are diametrically opposed. At the center of this struggle is Indigo, who is ripped from her tribe, the Sand Lizard people, by white soldiers who destroy her home and family. Placed in a government school to learn the ways of a white child, Indigo is rescued by the kind-hearted Hattie and her worldly husband, Edward, who undertake to transform this complex, spirited girl into a “proper” young lady. Bit by bit, and through a wondrous journey that spans the European continent, traipses through the jungles of Brazil, and returns to the rich desert of Southwest America, Indigo bridges the gap between the two forces in her life and teaches her adoptive parents as much as, if not more than, she learns from them.

Though it will be difficult, she knows if they can swim across to the opposite shore, they will be safe. With calls of encouragement and steadfast love, Mother Bear guides her cubs across the great lake, Lake Michigan. And the story of what happens once Mother Bear reaches the far shore becomes the legend behind the natural wonder known as Sleeping Bear Dune. In 1998 writer Kathy-jo Wargin and nature artist Gijsbert van Frankenhuyzen combined their talents to bring The Legend of Sleeping Bear to life. Published to wide acclaim, the book was soon named the Official Children's Book of Michigan.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sand Dunes of Indiana: The Story of an American Wonderland Told by Camera and Pen "The Dune Country of Indiana represents the work of one hundred times one thousand years, by such artists as glaciers, water, wind, and sun, until you find there a park, perfect, beautiful; a fairy land; a land of dreams; a land of remoteness; a land of solitude; a land of long beaches; a land on whose frail shores strong waves beat at times with thunderous roar; a land so fair and fine no city park could be made equal it by the expenditure of countless millions." - Theodore Jessup.
