Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This encyclopedia adopts a wider definition for the concept of ocean engineering. Specifically, it includes (1) offshore engineering: fixed and floating offshore oil and gas platforms; pipelines and risers; cables and moorings; buoy technology; foundation engineering; ocean mining; marine and offshore renewable energy; aquaculture engineering; and subsea engineering; (2) naval architecture: ship and special marine vehicle design; intact and damaged stability; technology for energy efficiency and green shipping; ship production technology; decommissioning and recycling; (3) polar and Arctic Engineering: ice mechanics; ice-structure interaction; polar operations; polar design; environmental protection; (4) underwater technologies: AUV/ROV design; AUV/ROV hydrodynamics; maneuvering and control; and underwater-specific communicating and sensing systems for AUV/ROVs. It summarizes the A–Z of the background and application knowledge of ocean engineering for use by ocean scientists and ocean engineers as well as nonspecialists such as engineers and scientists from all disciplines, economists, students, and politicians. Ocean engineering theories, ocean devices and equipment, ocean design and operation technologies are described by international experts, many from industry and each entry offers an introduction and references for further study, making current technology and operating practices available for future generations to learn from. The book also furthers our understanding of the current state of the art, leading to new and more efficient technologies with breakthroughs from new theory and materials. As the land resources approach the exploitation limit, ocean resources are becoming the next choice for the sustainable development. As such, ocean engineering is vital in the 21st century.

Book excerpt: Developments in the Collision and Grounding of Ships and Offshore includes the contributions to the 8th International Conference on Collision and Grounding of Ships and Offshore Structures (ICCGS 2019, Lisbon, Portugal, 21-23 October 2019). The series of ICCGS-conferences started in 1996 in San Francisco, USA, and are organised every three years in Europe, Asia and the Americas. Developments in the Collision and Grounding of Ships and Offshore covers a wide range of topics, from the behavior of large passenger vessels in collision and grounding, collision and grounding in arctic conditions including accidental ice impact, stability residual strength and oil outflow of ships after collision or grounding, collision and grounding statistics and predictions and measures of the probability of incidents, risk assessment of collision and grounding, prediction and measures for reduction of collision and grounding, new designs for improvement of structural resistance to collisions, analysis of ultimate strength of ship structures (bulkheads, tank tops, shell etc.), design of buffer bows to reduce collision consequences, design of foreship structures of ferries with doors to avoid water ingress in case of a collision, development of rational rules for the structural design against collision and grounding, innovative navigation systems for safer sea transportation, the role of IMO, classification societies, and other regulatory bodies in developing safer ships, collision between ships and offshore structures, collision between ships and fixed or floating bridges and submerged tunnels, collision with quays and waterfront structures, collision and grounding experiments, properties of marine-use materials under impact loadings, residual strength of damaged ships and offshore structures, analysis of ultimate strength of ship structures, to human factors in collision and grounding accidents. Developments in the Collision and Grounding of Ships and Offshore is a valuable resource for academics, engineers and professionals involved in these areas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the particular full-scale conditions modelled in the tests, the dimensionless level ice resistance obtained with the two models of the 140-foot WTGB was essentially independent of the model scale. The fact that no scale effects were identified in the present tests can be interpreted in two ways: one is that icebreakers of size and operating conditions in ice similar to those of the WTGB can be confidently model tested at a scale of at least 1:24. The second interpretation is that model tests of icebreakers may be conducted in model ice 2 cm thick or thicker and/or with a bending strength of 30 kPa or more, since these values were the test conditions for the smaller WTGB model; these tests conditions would then specify a limiting model scale so that they correspond to the desired operating conditions of an icebreaker under design. By conducting model tests not only in level ice but also through broken ice channels, it was possible to separate the level ice resistance into two main components. According to this analysis, it was shown that the ice-breaking component is primarily a function of the Cauchy number but also the Froude number, especially at speed low enough for the ship to experience significant pitching and heaving motions when riding on the level ice and falling back as the ice sheet fails.

Book excerpt: This study investigates the relative influence of various parameters on the kinetic friction coefficient mu sub k between ice and different surfaces. Friction tests were performed with urea-doped, columnar ice, studying the parameters of normal pressure, velocity, type of material, material roughness, ice orientation, ice hardness and test configuration. Tests were conducted by pulling a sample of ice over a sheet of material and by pulling a sample of material over an ice sheet. An ambient temperature of -1.5 + or - 1 deg C was maintained throughout, and the ice surface hardness was measured using a specially designed apparatus. The results of the friction tests revealed that the behavior of mu sub k with varying velocity was significantly influenced by the test configuration and material roughness. The magnitude of the kinetic friction coefficient was also affected by varying normal pressure, surface roughness and ice hardness. Additional guidelines for standardized ice friction tests and future investigations were recommended.
