In our approach we split the viscoelastic terms of the Oldroyd-B constitutive equation using Duhamel's formula and discretize the resulting PDEs using a semi-implicit finite difference method based on a Lax-Wendroff method for hyperbolic terms. In particular, we leave a small residual elastic term in the viscous limit by design to make the hyperbolic piece well-posed. A projection method is used to impose the incompressibility constraint. We are able to compute the full range of elastic flows in an abrupt contraction channel--from the viscous limit to the elastic limit--in a stable and convergent manner for elastic Mach numbers less than one. We demonstrate the method for unsteady Oldroyd-B and Maxwell fluids in planar contraction channels.

Book excerpt: We present a convergent and stable numerical algorithm to simulate unsteady incompressible viscoelastic flow in two dimensional complex geometry. The incompressible viscous momentum equation, coupled with the multiple mode Giesekus constitutive equation for viscoelastic stress, are used to model viscoelastic fluids in our problems. We recast the hyperbolic part of equations to a second order conservative finite difference method and leave the elliptic part as a source term to be computed by implicit methods. A second order Godunov method is introduced to compute edge-centered, time-centered primitive variables for calculating fluxes in a conservative finite difference equation, and then cell-centered conservative variables are updated using a hybrid flux divergence and source terms. The nonlinear stress source term in the elliptic part is computed separately by applying an operator splitting method with a new, stable, discretization. A projection method is used to enforce the velocity incompressibility constraint and to update pressure. Irregular computational domains are discretized with a Cartesian grid embedded boundary method. We demonstrate our numerical method by computing flow passing a sphere, flow in a well-rounded contraction channel, and in an abrupt contraction channel, with component Weissenberg numbers exceeding 300. The convergence rates of the solution error are second order in the L1 and L2 norms, and first order in the L[infinity] norm for velocity components in arbitrary smooth geometries. For stress components, this numerical algorithm showed second order convergence rate in the L1 norm, higher than first order in the L2 norm.

Book excerpt: Contraction flow of viscoelastic fluids has been a benchmark problem in non-Newtonian fluid mechanics because it mimics flows occurring in a number of industrial applications. It is also of considerable interest to academia to gain fundamental understanding of factors that affect the evolution of vortices and a complete understanding of the dynamics for a simple polymeric fluid has not been achieved. In this two part study we investigate the effect of pre deformation of a Boger fluid in a contraction geometry and the flow of surfactants in a parallel contraction geometry. Entry flow of a polymeric fluid results in the formation of upstream vortices, the presence of recirculation zones may lead to a nonuniform residence time and hence inferior quality products. In this work we study the effect of pre-stretching dilute flexible chain polymers by placing a cylinder in front of a contraction in a microfluidic device. This deformation applied to the polymer is remembered before it completely relaxes, this memory effect changes the rheological properties during the fading period of the deformation history. Applying pre-deformation gives rise to new type of vortex evolution that is different from the standard contraction case. Semi-dilute surfactant solutions that exhibit shear thickening nature can be potentially used in enhanced oil recovery to increase the sweep efficiency. Two parallel microfluidic contractions of different cross sectional area are used to investigate the rheological effect on the mass flux of the two channels. Shear thickening micellar solutions were found to increase the mass flux through the small channel compared to a newtonian fluid. This effect was observed only for a small range of flow rates. As flow rates increased inlet instabilities were observed that evolved into a chaotic behavior upon further increase in the net flow rate.

Three different viscoelastic fluid models have been considered - the Oldroyd-B, the FENE-P and Owens model for blood [R. G. Owens, A new microstructure-based constitutive model for human blood, J. Non-Newtonian Fluid Mech. 140 (2006), 57-70]. Initially the collapsible wall is considered as a zero thickness membrane model. Subsequently the collapsible wall is modelled as an incompressible neo-Hookean solid. Experiments in micro collapsible channels have also been performed.At present, there are no models in the literature thatsimultaneously account for the elastic nature of the collapsible wall and the non-Newtonian rheology of the flowing fluid. In this study, for the first time, a viscoelastic fluid-structure interaction model has been developed that accounts for a viscoelastic fluid and a finite thickness elastic wall, and the resulting governing equations are solved with a sophisticated finite element method. The rheological behaviour of the viscoelastic fluids is described in terms of a conformation tensor model. The mesh equation and transport equations are discretized by using the DEVSS-TG/SUPG mixed finite element method. The computational method developed in this work is validated by comparing with the available analytical and numerical results.While considering viscoelastic flow in a two-dimensional collapsible channel with a zero-thickness membrane, a distinct difference has been observed in the collapse wall profile for the Oldroyd-B, FENE-P and Owens model as compared to a Newtonian fluid at low values of membrane tension. The shape change of the collapsible wall depends on the Weissenberg number (Wi) for the Oldroyd-B and FENE-P fluids. The shape change in Owens model is essentially due to its shear thinning property. There is a limiting Weissenberg number beyond which computations fail, which increases with mesh refinement and decreases with decrease in membrane tension.One of the major outcomes of the zero-thickness membrane model study is that the significant differences that arise amongst the different viscoelastic fluids in the predicted value of the tangential shear stress on the membrane surface, has no influence on the shape of the deformable membrane, because of the boundary condition adopted in the model. Essentially it is assumed that the shape of the membrane is governed only by the normal stresses acting on it. In order to use a more realistic model for the collapsible wall, the zero-thickness membrane model has been replaced by a deformable finite thickness elastic solid which accounts for the effect of shear stress on membrane shape. The limiting Weissenberg number beyond which computations fail to converge is found to be sensitive to the choice of viscoelastic model and depends on a dimensionless solid elasticity parameter. The shape of the fluid-solid interface and the stress and velocity fields in the channel, for the three viscoelastic fluids, are compared with predictions for a Newtonian fluid, and the observed differences are related to individual fluid rheological behaviour. Predictions with a finite thickness elastic solid model for the deformable wall differ considerably from those in which it is modelled as a zero-thickness membrane.Experiments have been carried out in a micro-collapsible channel made of polydimethysiloxane (PDMS) that mimics the numerically simulated geometry. The experiments show that the channel width perpendicular to the flow must be significant in order for wall effects to be negligible (an assumption that is made in the 2D simulation). As a consequence, the commercial software ANSYS has been used to develop a full 3D model of the channel which captures the deformation of the flexible membrane in the absence of flow. The elastic properties of PDMS have been extracted by comparing the load-displacement curves obtained from the FEM simulations with the experiments. Preliminary comparison has been made between simulations and experiments for the flow of a Newtonian fluid in the micro-collapsible channel.
