Book Synopsis An Introduction to the Global Circulation of the Atmosphere by : David Randall
Download or read book An Introduction to the Global Circulation of the Atmosphere written by David Randall and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-06-23 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most comprehensive advanced graduate-level textbook on the subject This is a graduate-level textbook on the global circulation of the Earth's atmosphere—the large-scale system of winds by which energy is transported around the planet, from the tropical latitudes to the poles. Written by David Randall, one of the world’s foremost experts on the subject, it is the most comprehensive textbook on the topic. Intended for Earth science students who have completed some graduate-level coursework in atmospheric dynamics, the book will help students build on that foundation, preparing them for research in the field. The book describes the many phenomena of the circulation and explains them in terms of current ideas from fluid dynamics and thermodynamics, with frequent use of isentropic coordinates and using the methods of vector calculus. It emphasizes the key roles of water vapor and clouds, includes detailed coverage of energy flows and transformations, and pays close attention to scale interactions. The book also describes the major historical contributions of key scientists, giving a human dimension to the narrative, and it closes with a discussion of how the global circulation is evolving as the Earth’s climate changes. The most comprehensive graduate-level textbook on the subject Written by one of the world’s leading experts Connects global circulation and climate phenomena Addresses energy, moisture, and angular-momentum balance; the hydrologic cycle; and atmospheric turbulence and convection Emphasizes the energy cycle of the atmosphere; the role of moist processes; and circulation as an unpredictable, chaotic process Helps prepare students for research An online illustration package is available to professors

Download or read book Renewable Energy written by Bent Sorensen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-14 with total page 2318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This four-volume set, edited by a leading expert in the field, brings together in one collection a series of papers that have been fundamental to the development of renewable energy as a defined discipline. Some of the papers were first published many years ago, but they remain classics in their fields and retain their relevance to the understanding of current issues. The papers have been selected with the assistance of an eminent international editorial board. The set includes a general introduction and each volume is introduced by a new overview essay, placing the selected papers in context. The range of subject matter is considerable, including coverage of all the main renewable technologies, the fundamental principles by which they function, and the issues around their deployment such as planning, integration and socio-economic assessment. Overall, the set provides students, teachers and researchers, confronted with thousands of journal articles, book chapters and grey literature stretching back decades, with a ready-made selection of and commentary on the most important key writings in renewable energy. It will be an essential reference for libraries concerned with energy, technology and the environment.

Book Synopsis Diagnostics for and Evaluations of New Physical Parameterization Schemes for Global NWP Models by : Chien-Hsiung Yang
Download or read book Diagnostics for and Evaluations of New Physical Parameterization Schemes for Global NWP Models written by Chien-Hsiung Yang and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The procedures and results of a study undertaken to evaluate and assess the impacts of three new parameterization schemes for the GL global spectral model as a 3-4 day range forecast model are described. The tree parameterization schemes are one each for the boundary-layer physics, moist convection and heating due to solar and terrestrial radiations. These schemes are incorporated either singly or jointly into a rhomboidal-30, 12-layer global spectral model for four-day simulations using FGGE III- a data as input. Evaluation and assessment are made on the basis of two kinds of global statistics: mean and root-mean-square errors, and on their magnitudes and distributions. The statistics are generated for both the primary, that is, prognostic, variables, and supplementary variables such as zonal-mean and zonal-eddies energy densities. The new moist convection scheme has been found to increase convective activity significantly and maintain it throughout the four-day period. It also warms and dries the middle troposphere, but produces rainfall far in excess of the climatology. The radiation parameterization has been found to cool the atmosphere and reduce its specific humidity. It counterbalances enhanced heating and moistening brought about by the new boundary-layer and moist convection schemes and eliminates the systematic warming of the old model.
