Book excerpt: High-spatial-resolution microwave radiometer sensing from space with reasonable swath widths and revisit times favors large aperture systems. However, with traditional precision antenna design, the size and weight requirements for such systems are in conflict with the need to emphasize small launch vehicles. This paper describes tradeoffs between the science requirements, basic operational parameters, and expected sensor performance for selected satellite radiometer concepts utilizing novel lightweight compactly packaged real apertures. Antenna, feed, and radiometer subsystem design and calibration are presented. Preliminary results show that novel lightweight real aperture coupled with state-of-the-art radiometer designs are compatible with small launch systems, and hold promise for high-resolution earth science measurements of sea ice, precipitation, soil moisture, sea surface temperature, and ocean wind speeds. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thoroughly revising and updating an Artech House classic from 1989, this authoritative resource offers you a comprehensive and current understanding of radiometer systems and shows you how to design a system based on given specifications, taking into account both technical aspects and geophysical realities. The second edition contains a wealth of new material, including coverage of two of today's hottest microwave radiometry topics - polarimetric measurements and aperture synthesis. The book provides you with a complete explanation of radiometer sensitivity, and describes the concept of absolute accuracy and it's associated problems. The four major radiometer principles - total power, Dicke, noise-injection, and correlation - are presented in detail and their sensitivities are derived from the basic sensitivity formula provided in the book. Additionally, you find detailed review of the DTU noise-injection radiometer system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book begins by describing the construction of microwave radiometers at frequencies between 4 and 22 GHz using low cost components acquired from the Internet. The design is based on the lock-in amplifier approach developed by Dr. Robert Dicke in the 1940's. An historic picture of Dicke taking sky measurements using one of his radiometers is shown in the top-left (Figure 41 on page 64). Although microwave technology has advanced considerably, Dicke's basic design hasn't changed much. The radiometers described in this book were used to observe some well known atmospheric and surface features using far field measurements. Also discussed are less understood and more challenging issues pertaining to radiometer calibration and surface emissivity determination using near field measurements. The book ends with three chapters on satellite microwave radiometers. These chapters describe the history and measurements which played a large part in establishing the role of microwave radiometry in earth remote sensing. Examples also reveal unresolved observations that need to be better analyzed and understood after years of launching new satellite instruments. In addition to describing the radiometers and measurements, analytical models are developed to help bridge the gap between observations and their physical interpretation. As such, this book should be of interest to those studying microwave radiometry and its use in remote sensing of the earth's atmosphere and surface. Dr. Norman Grody began his study of microwave radiometry when working at NASA in 1971 at the time when they first began launching experimental instruments on satellites to view earth from space. He then joined NOAA in 1972 working on more advanced radiometers developed by the Air Force, Navy, NASA and NOAA. Until his retirement from NOAA in 2005 he was responsible for evaluating the performance of satellite microwave radiometers and developing algorithms to derive surface and atmospheric parameters from the measurements. These parameters such as temperature, water vapor, rain rate, snow cover, sea ice and sea surface winds are used by various organizations to monitor, analyze and forecast the global weather and climate. The top-right picture (Figure 68 on page 98) shows an example of global.

Book excerpt: This book demonstrates the capabilities of passive microwave technique for enhanced observations of ocean features, including the detection of (sub)surface events and/or disturbances while laying out the benefits and boundaries of these methods. It represents not only an introduction and complete description of the main principles of ocean microwave radiometry and imagery, but also provides guidance for further experimental studies. Furthermore, it expands the analysis of remote sensing methods, models, and techniques and focuses on a high-resolution multiband imaging observation concept. Such an advanced approach provides readers with a new level of geophysical information and data acquisition granting the opportunity to improve their expertise on advanced microwave technology, now an indispensable tool for diagnostics of ocean phenomena and disturbances.

This book was released on 2018-06-20 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The principle accomplishments involve a conceptual design of an airborne Hurricane Imaging (microwave) Radiometer (HiRad) instrument for use in operational hurricane surveillance. The basis of the HiRad design is the Stepped Frequency Microwave Radiometer (SFMR) that has successfully measured surface wind speed and rain rate in hurricanes from the NOAA Hurricane Research Division s P-3 aircraft. Unlike the SFMR that views only at nadir, the HiRad provides wide-swath measurements between +/- 45 deg. in incidence angle with a spot-beam spatial resolution of approximately 1-3 km. The system operates at four equally spaced frequency channels that cover a range between 4 GHz and 6 GHz. The final report consists of two parts. Part 1 is a reprint of a conference proceeding presented at the 2002 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium and authored by the principle members of the HiRad design team. Part 2 is a summary of the MMIC receiver design developed to support the HiRad sensor. Ruf, Christopher S. Langley Research Center

Book excerpt: During the three years of finding, we have carefully corrected for two sensor/platform problems, developed a physically based retrieval algorithm to calculate SST, wind speed, water vapor, cloud liquid water and rain rates, validated these variables, and demonstrated that satellite microwave radiometers can provide very accurate SST retrievals through clouds. Prior to this, there was doubt by some scientists that the technique of microwave SST retrieval from satellites is a viable option. We think we have put these concerns to rest, and look forward to making microwave SSTs a standard component of the Earth science data sets. Our TMI SSTs were featured on several network news broadcasts and were reported in Science magazine. Additionally, we have developed a SST algorithm for VIRS to facilitate IR/MW inter-comparisons and completed research into diurnal cycles and air-sea interactions.Wentz, Frank J. and Lawrence, Richard J.
