Download or read book La sociología y el mundo moderno written by Octavio Ianni and published by Siglo XXI. This book was released on 2005-12 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Turning up the heat by : Maria Kaika
Download or read book Turning up the heat written by Maria Kaika and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2023-02-28 with total page 533 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its emergence in the 1990s, the field of Urban Political Ecology (UPE) has focused on unsettling traditional understandings of the ‘city’ as entirely distinct from nature, showing instead how cities are metabolically linked with ecological processes and the flow of resources. More recently, a new generation of scholars has turned the focus towards the climate emergency. Turning up the heat seeks to turn UPE's critical energies towards a politically engaged debate over the role of extensive urbanisation in addressing socio-environmental equality in the context of climate change. The collection brings together theoretical discussions and rigorous empirical analysis by key scholars spanning three generations, engaging UPE in current debates about urbanisation and climate change. Engaging with cutting edge approaches including feminist political ecology, circular economies, and the Anthropocene, case studies in the book range from Singapore and Amsterdam to Nairobi and Vancouver. Contributors make the case for a UPE better informed by situated knowledges: an embodied UPE that pays equal attention to the role of postcolonial processes and more-than-human ontologies of capital accumulation within the context of the climate emergency. Acknowledging UPE’s rich intellectual history and aiming to enrich rather than split the field, Turning up the heat reveals how UPE is ideally positioned to address contemporary environmental issues in theory and practice.
Book Synopsis Teorias sociológicas no século XX by : José Maurício Domingues
Download or read book Teorias sociológicas no século XX written by José Maurício Domingues and published by Editora Record. This book was released on 2001-03-20 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. É autor de Sociological Theory and Collective Subjectivity (1995) e Criatividade Social, Subjetividade Coletiva e a Modernidade Brasileira Contemporânea e Sociologia e Modernidade.
Book Synopsis Capitalist Dispossessions by : Daniel Bin
Download or read book Capitalist Dispossessions written by Daniel Bin and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-07-30 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes contemporary dispossessions in Brazil, drawing on the Marxian concept of primitive accumulation to show how processes of proletarianization, capitalization, and commodification each relate in distinct ways to capitalist accumulation. With an emphasis on the processes by which immediate producers are turned into wage-dependent producers, and the means of subsistence are transformed into the means of capitalist production or commodities, the book presents studies of the movements of capital—as well as those aimed at defending the commons—showing how contemporary dispossession is related to capitalist accumulation. Ranging through the 1964–1985 military dictatorship, the transition to neoliberalism in the 1990s, the legislative coup that ousted the Workers Party from federal office in 2016, and the Bolsonaro government and its handling of the Covid-19 pandemic, the book demonstrates the socioeconomic shifts that have occurred in Brazil in recent decades. This book will appeal to scholars of social and political theory with interests in political economy, dispossession, contemporary commons, and Latin America.

This book was released on 2023-07-07 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, which combines scholarly articles with interviews, seeks to imagine a decolonized sociolinguistics. All the chapters are firmly grounded in southern approaches to knowledge production, focusing not only on epistemology but also on the complex relationship between epistemology and ontology. The chapters address issues ranging from author positionality to the central theorists of a southern sociolinguistics, and roam from the language classroom to the church, in ways which invite us to begin to decolonize ourselves and rethink normative assumptions about everything from academic writing to research methods and language teaching. The book provides scholars and teachers with inspiration for how to teach linguistics in ways that challenge colonial hegemonies and that allow one to ‘do’ sociolinguistics otherwise. It also makes a powerful argument that debates about decolonization, southern theory and social justice are not just academic pursuits: what is at stake is our future and how we imagine it.
