Book excerpt: Elliott West’s careful analysis of the role and development of the saloon as an institution on the mining frontier provides unique insights into the social and economic history of the American West. Drawing on contemporaneous newspapers and many unpublished firsthand accounts, West shows that the physical evolution of the saloon, from crude tents and shanties into elegant establishments for drinking and gaming, reflected the growth and maturity of the surrounding community.

CHAPTER V GROWTH OF LEADVILLE We have already told that Leadville in the spring of l877. consisted of a handful of log houses scattered along California Gulch, below the Harrison Smelter and appropriately called Slab Town; also how in June, Charles Mater started the first store and how this was followed by others. The beginning of the new year l878 found the settlement without a name and without an organization. A petition had been drawn asking for a post office; this necessitated the adoption of a name; hence on the fourteenth of January, eighteen citizens in response to a call, met in a little wagon shop on the present corner of Pine and Chestnut Streets to take the preliminary steps for a town organization. There was a great discussion over a name. "Harrison," "Myers," "Agassiz," "Cerussite" "Carbonate," "Lead City," were suggested, discussed, objected to, and finally Leadville proposed by C. Crair.er and agreed upon. There are many stories of this meeting, varying in details, but the story as written here seems to be the most authentic. Governor Routt, by proclamation, called the first city election to be held January 26. H.A.W. Tabor was elected Mayor and C. E. Anderson, Clerk. At the regular election in April, succeeding, Mr. Tabor was reelected and J.C.Cramer was chosen clerk. Then in May, as we have already told, was discovered the "Little Pittsburgh" and this produced the Rush. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1878 the name "Leadville" became synonymous with one of the world's greatest silver-producing regions. During the 1880s, when Leadville's economy was at its peak, the town was the second largest in Colorado, a mecca for prospectors, gamblers, retailers, performing artists, and entrepreneurs. In many respects, its history epitomizes the volatile character of Colorado's mining industry-from the rush to establish businesses, schools, churches, and newspapers in a booming mining camp to the conflict and violence of the miner's strike of 1896. More than forty years ago, Don L. Griswold and his wife, Jean Harvey Griswold, set out to describe the social, political, and economic life that grew out of Leadville's hard-rock industry. Their story of Leadville and Lake County stretches from the earliest explorations of the Upper Arkansas Valley to the beginnings of molybdenum mining in the twentieth century. A veritable encyclopedia of historical information, this massive two-volume, fully indexed reference work includes rare photographs from the Griswolds' personal collection and a bibliographic overview of Leadville's history by Colorado historian James E. Fell, Jr. Told with grace, humor, and authority, The History of Leadville and Lake County, Colorado is an invaluable reference tool for historians, genealogists, and any who seek a deeper understanding of the rich history of this mining town in Colorado's high country.

Book excerpt: From the time of Coronado?s discovery to the era of modern ski resorts and sport climbing routes, adventurers have been lured irresistibly to the Rocky Mountains. In this book distinguished writer David Lavender traces the colorful history of the Rockies, focusing on the period that began in 1859 with the first gold strikes. The real and fabled attractions of gold, silver, furs, lumber, and lead brought swarms of people into the mountains, eagerly seeking wealth. A get-rich-quick spirit pervaded the Rockies, leading to lawlessness, violence, vigilantism, and political expediency. The Rockies is particularly revealing about the struggles which resulted in codes peculiar to the mountainous West. Duane A. Smith provides a new introduction to this Bison Books edition of The Rockies.

Book excerpt: The railroad is coming west, all the way to Leadville and its rich Rocky Mountain mines, not to mention its millionaires. And who is coming to celebrate the arrival of the Denver & Rio Grande but Ulysses S. Grant, 18th President of the United States and former commander of the Union armies. Like other residents in the Colorado boomtown this summer of 1880, Inez Stannert regards the news as mixed. With her business partnership in the Silver Queen Saloon shaky and the bonds of family tightening (her husband is still missing and her young son is still back East), Inez doesn't need the lawlessness of Leadville to turn, once again, into murder. But Inez isn't the only one with iron ties to the past. Some folks have wicked memories of the war, others have a stake in the competing railroad lines. And photographer Susan Carothers, Inez's friend, is caught in the deadly crossfire....

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholars and enthusiasts of western American history have praised Elliott West as a distinguished historian and an accomplished writer, and this book proves them right on both counts. Capitalizing on West’s wide array of interests, this collection of his essays touches on topics ranging from viruses and the telegraph to children, bison, and Larry McMurtry. Drawing from the past three centuries, West weaves the western story into that of the nation and the world beyond, from Kansas and Montana to Haiti, Africa, and the court of Louis XV. Divided into three sections, the volume begins with conquest. West is not the first historian to write about Lewis and Clark, but he is the first to contrast their expedition with Mungo Park’s contemporaneous journey in Africa. “The Lewis and Clark expedition,” West begins, “is one of the most overrated events in American history—and one of the most revealing.” The humor of this insightful essay is a chief characteristic of the whole book, which comprises ten chapters previously published in major journals and magazines—but revised for this edition—and four brand-new ones. West is well known for his writings about frontier family life, especially the experiences of children at work and play. Fans of his earlier books on these subjects will not be disappointed. In a final section, he looks at the West of myth and imagination, in part to show that our fantasies about the West are worth studying precisely because they have been so at odds with the real West. In essays on buffalo, Jesse James and the McMurtry novel Lonesome Dove, West directs his formidable powers to subjects that continue to shape our understanding—and often our misunderstanding—of the American West, past and present.
