Book excerpt: What is the Kingdom of God understanding in Roman occupied Palestine as depicted in Mark’s narrative is the goal of the book. The book stresses the social and political dimension of the Kingdom of God in Mark against a always futurist, eschatological and spiritual understanding of the concept. The Book then draws implications from the Mennonite Brethren church of Congo to see whether a shift paradigm of this concept can bring more empowerment and social, economic and political vision of this conservative organization.

Book excerpt: Social Medi: God's Way is designed to help build a strong rapport that can be used not only as youth but also as a continual reference while growing up with God and well into adulthood. Social media is a wonderful gift, especially for Christians, and whether we like it or not, it is not going away any time soon. As with anything else, it can be used in both good ways and bad. The key to a good online experience is handling it prayerfully with the right intentions and in the fear of God. As parents, educators, and religious leaders, we must provide our children with the godly tools necessary to survive and help their ability to be empowered young Christians. There are many ways of discovering how using social media can be a great tool. This book is intended to show how to build good relationships, introduce and encourage other believers, build good reputations, and develop good social skills. It provides young Christians with ways to make their interactions awesome and powerful as well as point them in the direction of gaining tremendous potential for a great online experience, if handled in a godly manner. Just as we engage as Christians face-to-face at church, in Bible study, youth groups, and Sunday school, it is important that they are taught how to create a foundation to share themselves, love, and the Word of God respectfully with the world while at the same time having fun.

Book excerpt: Can there be God-conscious organizational behaviour in the real world of today’s capitalist corporations and the alternatives? In this overview of God-consciousness as a moral-awareness model of preference formation, functions, structures, and programs of organization within the purview of institutions and society, the authors explain and compare the major ethical issues of organizational behaviour and structure in Islamic economic theory and application. By analysing the nature of inclusive organizations and institutions, and the ethical preferences in Islamic choice framework, the authors from Saudi Arabia, Australia, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Canada, Indonesia and the UK, can highlight individual aspects to show whether capitalist organizational behaviour is sustainable. They describe how The Tawhidi epistemological framework governing conscious moral decision-making by institutions and organization, are used to establish the meaning and potential application of the concept of sustainability, and whether organizational moral objectives achieve their goals of life-fulfilment development, Poverty alleviation and the equitable distribution of wealth and resources.

Book excerpt: This book promotes a social justice approach that emphasizes social relations, human desires, and lifestyles, demonstrating that Saint Augustine’s thinking is still relevant today when reflecting on ethical choices that allow the permanence of social bonds. It also investigates the conceptual underpinnings of “social justice” in modern and contemporary political philosophy, drawing on ideas from Machiavelli, Arendt, Polanyi, and Foucault, as well as Western Marxist and Postmodern perspectives, to emphasize the significance of Augustine’s ethics. The complexity of 21st century social and economic problems necessitates a thorough reworking of conceptual political philosophy outlooks in a context of unprecedented political and environmental concerns. This book will result in significant progress toward a philosophy of social justice by renewing the relationship between political life and ethical choices oriented to social well-being. To address social justice, we must be able to reinterpret social challenges from new perspectives. The dialogue between Saint Augustine and relevant political philosophers allows for a discussion that may lead to the development of new frameworks and answers. This book certainly prepares the reader for current, real-world social justice debates.

These responses are often driven by pastoral concern rather than a theology of church and society. But without theological roots, such social action can be vulnerable and episodic. This volume, commissioned by a group of Bishops in hard-hit dioceses, looks to develop strong theological foundations for local social action initiatives by churches, especially for activists who are not familiar with the Church of England’s tradition of social theology, developed by William Temple and others a century ago. In exploring what a renewed Anglican social theology might look like, this also draws on the impact of Catholic Social Teaching and focuses on the core topics of multiculturalism, economics, family patterns, ecology and other key issues.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to interpret historical writings, the reader must not employ their modern understanding of the world, but must strive to grasp the mindset of the original audience. To assist the twentieth-century New Testament reader in understanding the literal meaning of the New Testament is the goal of this collection of essays. The Social World of Jesus and the Gospels provides the reader with a set of possible scenarios for reading the New Testament: How did first-century persons think about themselves and others? Did they think Jesus was a charismatic leader? Why did they call God 'father'? Were they concerned with their gender roles? The eight essays in this collection were previously published in books and journals generally not available to many readers. Carefully selected and edited, this collection will be both an introduction and an invaluable source of reference to Bruce Malina's thought.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A resurgence of Trinitarian interest gained momentum in the twentieth century and it is showing little sign of abating in the twenty-first century. This research endeavors to critically evaluate Miroslav Volf's ecclesial model for "the church as the image of the Trinity," one that he presents with the English title, After Our Likeness. Volf proposes a social doctrine of the Trinity, one that is heavily influenced by the theological writings of Jurgen Moltmann, and he puts forward that this nonhierarchical Trinity should be reflected in the structures and theology of the church. If Volf is correct, then a radical reshaping is needed for the church to conform to an egalitarian pattern, one that is "after the likeness" (Gen 1:26) of an egalitarian God. In this critical examination, Kevin J. Bidwell begins by stating the theological influences that are pertinent to Volf's thesis in After Our Likeness and the assumptions that undergird and inform his whole theological paradigm. An important theological excursus is offered to assess the theology of John Smyth, the first English Baptist, who is Volf's representative figure for the location of his own ecclesiology, the Free Church. A critical analysis follows of Volf's engagement with his two chosen dialogue partners who represent both Western and Eastern theological traditions: Joseph Ratzinger and John D. Zizioulas. Volf presents five theses for "the church as the image of the Trinity," which could be labeled as Volf's Free Church in the image of Volf's revised doctrine of the Trinity. This monograph offers extensive insight into the contemporary debate on the doctrine of the Trinity, but it also assesses many aspects of ecclesiology from both Eastern and Western perspectives.
