Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of the events described in this book (except for the murder and subsequent investigation) have their parallels in this life. The writing of this book is something of a catharsis in dealing with this pain. This is a fictional account of dishonesty, malfeasance of duty by trusted public officials, hardships placed on honest people by dishonest officials and subsequent consequences suffered not by those officials but by the people they serve. Although this is a fictional account, the reader will recognize the traits illustrated in this story by officials foreign and domestic. This is not a book to give legal advice, accounting procedures, business decisions nor how to run a hotel. The opinions expressed in this work of fiction are solely those of the characters expressing them.

Book excerpt: Snowball—an aptly named bundle of feline fluff—is thankful to be spending her first Christmas in the comfort of Weber Haus, the Victorian B&B run by Miss Tilly. Emily Diemer, who cooks for the guests, dotes on Snowball, but she’s not thrilled about another new arrival at the B&B: Miss Tilly’s nephew, Lukas. Which is odd, because Snowball’s animal instincts tell her that Lukas and Emily should definitely be friends. Everything Emily needs is in this quaint community—including, she hopes, the chance to open her own bakery one day. She doesn’t think much of Lukas for leaving his aging aunt to struggle while he jets around the world taking photographs. But now that he’s here, helping to spruce up the property and getting mixed up in Snowball’s antics, she begins to soften a little. Until she learns what he has planned . . . Lukas is going to sell Weber Haus so that Miss Tilly can retire. But Snowball is certain that this B&B, and these people, are supposed to be her forever home. Somehow she has to get these stubborn humans to see things through the wisdom of a cat’s eye and a kitten’s loyal, loving heart . . . “Expertly crafted…the perfect Christmas treat.” —Booklist, Starred Review

Book excerpt: Shortlisted for the Financial Times and Goldman Sachs Business Book of the Year Prize 2008 The Snowball is the first and will be the only biography of the world's richest man, Warren Buffett, written with his full cooperation and collaboration. Combining a unique blend of "The Sage of Omaha's" business savvy, life story and philosophy, The Snowball is essential reading for anyone wishing to discover and replicate the secrets of his business and life success. Warren Buffett is arguably the world's greatest investor. Even as a child he was fascinated by the concept of risk and probability, setting up his first business at the age of six. In 1964 he bought struggling Massachusetts textile firm Berkshire Hathaway and grew it to be the 12th largest corporation in the US purely through the exercise of sound investing principles - a feat never equalled in the annals of business. Despite an estimated net worth of around US$62 billion, Buffett leads an intriguingly frugal life taking home a salary of only £50,000 a year. His only indulgence is a private jet, an extravagance he wryly acknowledges by calling it "The Indefensible". In 2006, he made the largest charitable donation on record, with most of it going to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The Snowball provides a comprehensive, richly detailed insight one of the world's most extraordinary and much loved public figures.

They are descendants of some of the earliest settlers in this very remote area. Foggy Bottom folks are known to be clannish and the Horns are viewed as a backwoods clan by the residents of the nearby town, Pine Hill. Anthony Hall, the bankers son, from Pine Hill is in love with Beth Horn, the daughter of the most prominent family in Foggy Bottom. Beth is a brilliant and vivacious young lady who is a premed student at the University of Texas, but the residents of Pine Hill still see her as that little Fog Head kid who sold peas from the Horn pea patch.. The prejudice on both sides of the river creates serious problems especially between the Pine Hills mayors son, Bobby Dodd and Thomas Horn. A story of trials, faith, integrity and perseverance unfolds as each of the Horn family tries to merge with their prejudiced laden environment.

Book excerpt: Drawing on unpublished documents and oral histories, an illustrated examination of an iconic artwork of an artist who has made a lifework of tactical evasion. One wintry day in 1983, alongside other street sellers in the East Village, David Hammons peddled snowballs of various sizes. He had neatly laid them out in graduated rows and spent the day acting as obliging salesman. He called the evanescent and unannounced street action Bliz-aard Ball Sale, thus inscribing it into a body of work that, from the late 1960s to the present, has used a lexicon of ephemeral actions and self-consciously “black" materials to comment on the nature of the artwork, the art world, and race in America. And although Bliz-aard Ball Sale has been frequently cited and is increasingly influential, it has long been known only through a mix of eyewitness rumors and a handful of photographs. Its details were as elusive as the artist himself; even its exact date was unrecorded. Like so much of the artist's work, it was conceived, it seems, to slip between our fingers—to trouble the grasp of the market, as much as of history and knowability. In this engaging study, Elena Filipovic collects a vast oral history of the ephemeral action, uncovering rare images and documents, and giving us singular insight into an artist who made an art of making himself difficult to find. And through it, she reveals Bliz-aard Ball Sale to be the backbone of a radical artistic oeuvre that transforms such notions as “art,” “commodity,” “performance,” and even “race” into categories that shift and dissolve, much like slowly melting snowballs.
