Download or read book The Siouan Cults (Illustrated Edition) written by James Owen Dorsey and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2018-11-02 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This eBook has been formatted to the highest digital standards and adjusted for readability on all devices. Cult, as used in this book, means a system of religious belief and worship, especially the rites and ceremonies employed in such worship. The present book treats of the cults of a few of the Siouan tribes—that is, with two exceptions, of such tribes as have been visited by the author. "Siouan" is a term originated by the Bureau of Ethnology. It is derived from "Sioux," the popular name for those Indians who call themselves "Dakota" or "Lakota," the latter being the Teton appellation. "Siouan" is used as an adjective, but, unlike its primitive, it refers not only to the Dakota tribes, but also to the entire linguistic stock or family. The Siouan family includes the Dakota, Assiniboin, Omaha, Ponka, Osage, Kansa, Kwapa, Iowa, Oto, Missouri, Winnebago, Mandan, Hidatsa, Crow, Tutelo, Biloxi, Catawba, and other Indians.
Download or read book The Book of Snakes written by Mark O'Shea and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2024-01-02 with total page 658 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Updated to reflect the most recent species classifications, a second edition of the beautifully illustrated and beloved guide to 600 members of the suborder Serpentes. For millennia, humans have regarded snakes with an exceptional combination of fascination and revulsion. Some people recoil in fear at the very suggestion of these creatures, while others happily keep them as pets. Snakes can convey both beauty and menace in a single tongue flick, and so these creatures have held a special place in our cultures. Yet, for as many meanings as we attribute to snakes—from fertility and birth to sin and death—the real-life species represent an even wider array of wonders. Now in a new edition, reflecting the most recent species classifications, The Book of Snakes presents 600 species of snakes from around the world, covering roughly one in seven of all snake species. It will bring greater understanding of a group of reptiles that have existed for more than 160 million years and that now inhabit every continent except Antarctica, as well as two of the great oceans. This volume pairs spectacular photos with easy-to-digest text. It is the first book on these creatures that combines a broad, worldwide sample with full-color, life-size accounts. Entries include close-ups of the snake’s head and a section of the snake at actual size. The detailed images allow readers to examine the intricate scale patterns and rainbow of colors as well as special features like a cobra’s hood or a rattlesnake’s rattle. The text is written for laypeople and includes a glossary of frequently used terms. Herpetologists and herpetoculturists alike will delight in this collection, and even those with a more cautious stance on snakes will find themselves drawn in by the wild diversity of the suborder Serpentes.

Download or read book Snake written by Drake Stutesman and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2005-11-15 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A snake smells with its tongue, hears with its flesh, and breathes under the sand with one lung; it can copulate for days with one snake or with fifty at once; it has infrared radar; and it can induce spontaneous bleeding if threatened. With all these qualities, it is easy to see how snakes have such varied associations in cultures around the world: while celebrated in tattoos and tales, and for medicinal benefits, snakes are also so universally feared that they constantly endure intense persecution and rarely enjoy protected rights. Drake Stutesman explores here in Snake the fascinating natural history of the maligned serpentine. Stutesman examines a wide range of sources to investigate the complex and widespread symbolism the snake has inspired, including the serpent's temptation of Eve in the Bible, Kaa in The Jungle Book, the Chinese zodiac, Indian snake charmers, and the Hollywood film Anaconda. She looks at the role snakes have played in human culture and science, from snake cuisine and the use of venom in medicine to the intriguing history of snake symbolism in art, architecture, cinema, and even clothing. Richly illustrated and written in an engaging style, Snake is an invaluable resource for snake enthusiasts and scholars, as well as for all who love, admire, or fear this fascinating and enduring animal.

Book Synopsis The Costly Anointing by : Pastor Christine Peebles
Download or read book The Costly Anointing written by Pastor Christine Peebles and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2018-08-21 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Greater love hath no man than this: that a man lay down his life for his friends" (John 15:13)""that is exactly what Jesus done for us. Jesus gave his life to pay the debt that we owed and could not pay, and he paid the debt that he did not owe, which was our debt to sin. Now that is costly. One Sunday while preaching, I heard God say, "Look to your left." I did, and there was some writing on the wall that said, "Your debt to sin has been paid in full: it was written in blood." I stopped, and I screamed. I read to the congregation what was written on the wall. Some tried seeing it, but they couldn't""they had to receive the vision that God had given unto me. The blood of Jesus paying our debt to sin is the costly anointing. Jesus made himself a curse to redeem us from the curse of the law. Jesus bore our sins in his body as he hanged on the cross; he bore our griefs and carried our sorrows. The writer of Hebrews said, "For we have not a high priest that cannot be touched with the feelings of our infirmities." That is costly. After writing my book, I Overcame by the Blood of the Lamb, I heard God say, "You obtained my anointing by the things that I suffered you to go through. I want you to title this book The Costly Anointing." There is nothing that can compensate for the shedding of Jesus's blood.

Book excerpt: The Circle of Knowledge is an informative book that was designed in 1917, to be both inspiring and entertaining. The book represents the modern, progressive spirit which fits that time, in its forms of expression and its editorship. The purpose of this work is to answer the why, who, what, when, where, how of the wide majority of curious minds, both young and adult, and encourage them to raise further questions. Special measures were taken in creating this work to isolate essentials from non-essentials; to differentiate human interest subjects of universal significance from those of little concern; to deliver living truths instead of dead vocabulary; and finally, to bring the whole within the knowledge of the intermediate reader, without regard to age, in an acceptable and exciting form. The use of visual outlines and tables; maps, drawings, and diagrams; the illustrated works of great painters, sculptors, and architects all are used to give the reader the valuable and cultural knowledge of past and present.
