This book was released on 1981 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper challenges the widely-held idea that the distribution of income has become more equal in Sri Lanka in recent years and that the living standards of the poor have risen substantially. The survey data on income distribution is internally inconsistent and subject to so many biases that it is not possible to rigorously determine the direction or magnitude of the change in income distribution. More importantly, there is no evidence that the living standards improved for any major population segment during the period in which income is considered more equally distributed.

Book Synopsis Benoit Revisited by : Lisa M. Grobar
Download or read book Benoit Revisited written by Lisa M. Grobar and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1970s, Emile Benoit shocked development economists by presenting positive cross-country correlations between military expenditures and economic growth rates in less developed countries. Skeptics have abounded, and Benoit's research has been much worked over, both conceptually and statistically. This paper reviews this debate. We conclude that Benoit's findings were aberrant: Most studies suggest that military spending does have an adverse impact on economic growth in developing countries, largely through its adverse effect on saving and investment.

Book Synopsis Correlations Between Population Growth and Economic Growth by : Robin Barlow
Download or read book Correlations Between Population Growth and Economic Growth written by Robin Barlow and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In discussions of how population growth affects the growth of per captia income, studies are often cited which show that the two variables are uncorrelated cross-sectionally. Sometimes it is then inferred that the Malthusian scenario, according to which rapid population growth reduces economic welfare, is mistaken. This paper reviews the simple cross-sectional correlations between population growth and per capita income growth appearing in earlier studies, and uses both old and new data sets to obtain soem more correlations. It is concluded that for periods during the last forty years, the correlations among low-income countries tend to be zero, while those among high-income countries and among all countries combined tend to be negative. The limitations of simple correlation for inferring causal linkages between population growth and per capita income growth are also discussed.

Book Synopsis Econometric Models of Governmental Aid to Multilateral Agencies by : Gérald Collange
Download or read book Econometric Models of Governmental Aid to Multilateral Agencies written by Gérald Collange and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper investigates the extent to which donors' multilateral aid is affected by conditions in their own economics. For this purpose, we use multiple regression techniques consisting of a pooling of cross-section and time series observations on a sample of eight major DAC members (United States, Germany, United Kingdom, France, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Denmark) over a 15-year period (1968 to 1982). Despite the highly speculative nature of such an analysis -- the volume of aid is ultimately a political decision -- the results seem to indicate that economic factors, such as the growth of GNP, the budget surplus or the balance of payments position might influence the volume of multilateral aid. Futhermore, a comparison of the multilateral and bilateral aid outlays seems to suggest that they are differently influenced by economic factors. However, these results are only statistically significant when the volume of aid is expressed in absolute terms (nominal or real terms). When it is expressed as a proportion of GNP, only the GNP per capita is significant as a predictor.

Download or read book Historical Migration Patterns and Current Temporary Migration written by Susan I. Ranney and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the demand for low skilled labor in the United States has long been identified with the flow of migration from Mexico, the associated supply conditions of this migration remain a relatively neglected topic of research. Using a national migration survey (ENEFNEU), three determinants of the propensity for individual temporary migration from Mexico to United States are examined: individual characteristics, structural characteristics of the region of origin, and historical migration patterns. The levels and changes in patterns of temporary migration during the 1974-78 period are investigated, including consideration of the development of new source regions in Mexico. Previously developed migration networks are found to play a key role in explaining more current patterns of temporary migration.
