Book excerpt: A new approach is proposed for analyzing the compressible turbulent boundary layer with arbitrary pressure gradient. The new theory generalizes an incompressible study to account for variations in wall temperature and free- stream Mach number and temperature. By properly handling the law-of-the-wall in the integration of momentum and continuity across the boundary layer, one may obtain a single ordinary differential equation for skin friction devoid of integral thicknesses and shape factors. The new differential equation is analyzed for various cases. For flat plate flow, a new relation is derived which is accurate for adiabatic flow and reasonably good for flow with heat transfer. For flow with strong adverse and favorable pressure gradients, the new theory is in good agreement with experiment. The new theory also contains an explicitly criterion for boundary layer flow separation.

Book excerpt: An experimental program was conducted to investigate effects of roughness, and roughness superimposed on single and/or multiple, shallow, periodic waveforms, on turbulent boundary-layer skin friction and velocity profile, in compressible, adiabatic flow. Test conditions were Mach number = 2.9 and Reynolds number/ft = 2 million to 8 million. The planar models included smooth, sand-grain, machined and molded surface finishes. Direct measurements of surface shear and Pitot/recovery temperature profiles were obtained. (Modified author abstract).

Book excerpt: The report outlines the details for engineering use of White's two- dimensional theory of turbulent skin friction under arbitrary compressible flow conditions. The new method is not only simple but accurate. It is recommended for general use by engineering designers. The method concerns skin friction only. The report presents methods for hand or digital computer computation. Several examples are presented.

This book was released on 1985 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A discrete element model for turbulent flow over two-dimensional rib-type roughness is developed and validated. Surface roughness blockage effects and form drag are included as a constituent part of the differential equations. Separation and reattachment of the flow over rib roughness are identified as the dominant flow phenomena, and models are developed which incorporate the separated region geometry into the blockage. The form drag model is based on the pressure difference between the windward and leeward forces of the roughness. Predictions are compared with a variety of data sets. These comparisons indicate that the discrete element approach can be successfully applied for rib-type roughness. However, the model has a more narrow range of application for different surface geometries than the very broad range which has previously been demonstrated for three-dimensional, distributed roughness. Keywords: Two-dimensional roughness; Rib roughness; Boundary layer.

Book excerpt: "ESDU 73016 gives curves and an equation for the value of Reynolds number based on distance along the plate above which an increase in roughness height will not affect skin friction dray. Also given are curves for the mean skin friction on an aerodynamically smooth, or a fully rough, plate at zero incidence for Mach numbers from 0 to 5 for various roughness heights. The use of the data for cylinders, and for cones and wedges in supersonic flow, is explained. Comparison with experimental data shows an r.m.s. error of 3 per cent in incompressible flow rising to 9 per cent for compressible adiabatic flow."--Page [4] of cover.

Book excerpt: Experiment have been conducted to measure the local surface-shear stress and the average skin-friction coefficient in incompressible flow for a turbulent boundary layer on a smooth flat plate having zero pressure gradient. Data were obtained for a range of Reynolds numbers from 1 million to 45 million. The local surface-shear stress was measured by a floating-element skin-friction balance and also by a calibrated total head tube located on the surface of the test wall. The average skin-friction coefficient was obtained from boundary-layer velocity profiles.

Book excerpt: Experimental definition of the local and integral values of friction drag of an aircraft or its elements is one of the basic problems of applied aerodynamics. We also should note the undoubted significance of this value for the development of modern lifting profiles and other aircraft elements, the description of near-wall flows in a form of similarity laws and testing of the numerical techniques of computation of flow around such aircrafts. However, to define this value accurately, one should have a clear conception of the possibilities and efficiency of application of one or another technique for a special case of body flow around. Though any experimental work assumes application of a certain concrete technique, including one for skin friction finding, the available literature information is as a rule uncoordinated, i.e., this information reflects only the level of availability of the technique applied. For this reason the researches like devoted to the development of new techniques and investigation of the efficiency of the known ones under various experimental conditions, become very important. The simplified layout gives a pictorial view of the main techniques of skin friction measurement, existing at the present time. The detailed consideration of these techniques is given in The present paper presents a comparative analysis of a number of direct and indirect measuring techniques wen they are applied in a incompressible turbulent boundary layer of a flat plate under the conditions of formation of a unfavorable (positive) and favorable (negative) streamwise pressure gradients on the plate surface, and also in plate gradient-free flow around.

Book excerpt: An investigation of five computer programs which calculate skin friction and boundary-layer integral properties in two-dimensional, turbulent, transonic flow was conducted. The five programs were of varying complexity and consisted of four boundary-layer-type methods with turbulence modeling varying from algebraic eddy viscosity models to a two-equation of turbulence model, and one mean flow compressible Navier-Stokes technique with algebraic turbulence modeling. The quality of the computed results was judged by comparison with available experimental data. For the data considered (which were nonseparated, two-dimensional, transonic, adiabatic wall data), the most accurate calculations of skin friction were provided by an integral boundary-layer method and a finite difference boundary-layer method, both with algebraic turbulence modeling.
