Book excerpt: We use the light-front quark model to investigate the structure of the scalar mesons, mainly focusing on the three heavy isoscalar states f0(1370), f0(1500), and f0(1710). We comput the spectrum of scalar mesons by diagonalizing a relativized, QCD-inspired model Hamiltonian written in a basis of 25 simple harmonic oscillator states. The masses are then used to perform a mixing analysis which assumes that the heavy isoscalars are mixtures of quarkonia and the scalar glueball. The resulting quark-glue content is used along with the meson wave functions determined from the spectrum to compute the decay rates to pairs of pseudoscalar mesons (two pions, two kaons, two eta mesons). We find that when the glueball contributions to the decays are ignored, the results are in poor agreement with the available data. However, when we estimate the effect of including the glueball contributions in the decays, a solution can be found that matches the data quite well. In this solution, the f0(1710) is mostly glueball (78%) while the f0(1500) and f0(1370) are mostly mixtures of quarkonia. Additionally, in this solution the glueball contributions to kaon and eta final states are significant, while the contributions to the pion final state is negligible. This finding is in agreement with Chanowitz who uses chiral perturbation theory to show that the amplitude for a scalar glueball to decay to a quark-antiquark pair is proportional to the quark mass. This results in a suppression of the pion decay channel compared to the kaon and eta decay channels.

Book excerpt: In this study, a unitary coupled-channels model is presented for investigating the decays of heavy mesons and excited meson states into three light pseudoscalar mesons. The model accounts for the three-mesons final state interactions in the decay processes, as required by both the three-body and two-body unitarity conditions. In the absence of the Z-diagram mechanisms that are necessary consequences of the three-body unitarity, our decay amplitudes are reduced to a form similar to those used in the so-called isobar-model analysis. We apply our coupled-channels model to the three-pions decays of [alpha]1(1260), [pi]2(1670), [pi]2(2100), and D0 mesons, and show that the Z-diagram mechanisms can contribute to the calculated Dalitz plot distributions by as much as 30% in magnitudes in the regions where f0(600), [rho](770), and f2(1270) dominate the distributions. Also, by fitting to the same Dalitz plot distributions, we demonstrate that the decay amplitudes obtained with the unitary model and the isobar model can be rather different, particularly in the phase that plays a crucial role in extracting the CKM CP-violating phase from the data of B meson decays. Our results indicate that the commonly used isobar model analysis must be extended to account for the final state interactions required by the three-body unitarity to reanalyze the three-mesons decays of heavy mesons, thereby exploring hybrid or exotic mesons, and signatures of physics beyond the standard model.

Book excerpt: In D°- and F-meson decays, QCD effects are expected to activate W-exchange processes (quark-annihilation processes), as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, which by themselves are strongly suppressed because of helicity mismatch. For example, the D° meson, on gluon emission, can flip its spin so that the subsequent weak decay proceeds without helicity suppression. Hard-gluon emission from the D° meson, evaluated perturbatively, enhances the D° decay rate (by approx. 20%). Soft-gluon emission is an equally likely source of enhancements in charmed-meson decays, and indeed seems to be the dominant one. This soft-gluon effect in charmed-meson decays was studied by a nonperturbative method that has theoretical foundations in QCD. The basic tool is a multipole expansion in QCD. The analysis is divided into three steps: virtual color-fluctuation of charmed mesons, separation of long-distance and short-distance phenomena by use of QCD multipole expansion, and evaluation of the soft-gluon effect.
