Book excerpt: A sounding rocket tumble system to enhance deceleration and redirect the flight path angle of a vehicle can be an effective means of accomplishing large spacial separation between a separated payload and the spent final stage rocket motor. The design and implementation of two such systems, for 9-in. - and 17-in. -diam payloads, is presented. Flight test results show that separation distances between payload and vehicle in the order of 10 percent of vehicle apogee can be achieved. (Author).
Book Synopsis A Single Station Doppler Range Technique for Sounding Rocket Trajectories by : K. A. Steele
Download or read book A Single Station Doppler Range Technique for Sounding Rocket Trajectories written by K. A. Steele and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A doppler ranging technique for determining the height and horizontal range-time histories of flight of a sounding rocket is described. Two stable oscillators operating at the same frequency are employed. One oscillator is carried in the rocket and its output is telemetered to the ground. The other oscillator is used as a ground-based reference located at the telemetry receiving station at the launch site. The method is primarily of interest for use at remote launching sites where normal range tracking facilities do not exist. The results of a number of trials of the method with Black Brant II rockets launched at the Churchill Research Range are discussed. They indicate that an accuracy of plus or minus 1 km for apogee height can be obtained. (Author).

Book Synopsis An Investigation of the Optimum Design and Flight of Rockets by : John D. Bird
Download or read book An Investigation of the Optimum Design and Flight of Rockets written by John D. Bird and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analysis using classical variational methods was made whereby significant physical characteristics of rockets were determined in an optimal sense. A two-point boundary-value problem was formulated which, when solved, provided the significant physical parameters and flight path for a two-stage rocket which would deliver a given payload to orbit with minimum total initial mass. Numerical solutions were carried out for nine cases by an iterative method. The results show how the stage masses and thrusts should be proportioned for various structural efficiencies in the fuel tanks and rocket motors. Analyses of the type carried out for this investigation should be useful in the sizing and, generally, in the design of rockets.
