Book Synopsis The Column of Antoninus Pius by : Lise Vogel
Download or read book The Column of Antoninus Pius written by Lise Vogel and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1973 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortly after the death in 161 of Antoninus Pius, his sons dedicated a column to him as a funerary monument. The form of the column in general and the reliefs on the pedestal in particular raise problems central to the understanding of Roman art. In this first thorough study, illustrated with nearly 100 photographs, Lise Vogel restores the column to its rightful place as one of the major monuments of Roman art. In addition, she re-evaluates the meaning of the column of Antoninus Pius in the context of the development of second century Roman imperial sculpture.
Book Synopsis The Excavation of Roman and Mediaeval London by : W. F. Grimes
Download or read book The Excavation of Roman and Mediaeval London written by W. F. Grimes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-10-24 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an immensely fascinating work, published originally in 1968, which is of great value in understanding London’s past. The immediate background to the excavations was the bombing of London during the Second World War, which led to the destruction of more than fifty of the three hundred and fifty or so acres that make up the walled city. The interval before rebuilding was a magnificent opportunity for archaeological excavation. The Royal Society of Antiquaries of London established the Roman and Mediaeval London Excavation Council to organise an extended programme which began in July 1947 and went on until 1962. This volume reports on the major series of excavations and deals in detail with Cripplegate, the Temple of Mithras and many mediaeval churches including St Bride’s, Fleet Street.

Book Synopsis A Corpus of Roman Engraved Gemstones from British Sites by : Martin Henig
Download or read book A Corpus of Roman Engraved Gemstones from British Sites written by Martin Henig and published by Archaeopress Archaeology. This book was released on 1978 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The primary purpose of an engraved gem or ring-bezel, cut in intaglio, was to make an impression upon some fictile material., which would be understood by the owner of the device, and by his associates, as a personal signature.' So began Martin Henig's original BAR Number 7 from 1978, in the British Series of British Archaeological Reports, a catalogue and study of over 1000 Roman engraved gemstones from the British Isles. Nearly 30 years later comes the third edition of this study, the new Preface to which concludes: 'Over the years I have thought more about gems in relation to other arts and have integrated glyptics into my book on The Art of Roman Britain (1995). Several papers I have written recently have attempted to use gems, like sculpture, painting and bronzes to elucidate general artistic problems. This should be obvious but how many art-historians seem to have the inclination to take gems seriously? At least interest in provincial glyptics seems greater today and that gives me grounds for hope Important studies are being conducted across the Empire ranging from Belgium . and Portugal ., toTurkey . andIsrael. It is for each new generation to reassess theevidence, in the case of our subjectwith the aid of new techniques, of computing on the one hand and scientific analysis of materials and cutting techniques on the other. In addition the fresh eye of youth is always invaluable. Someone else can often see what should have been obvious to one all the time. (Wolfson College, Oxford. Feast of St Frideswide, 2005)'

Book Synopsis The End of Paganism in the North-western Provinces of the Roman Empire by : Eberhard Sauer
Download or read book The End of Paganism in the North-western Provinces of the Roman Empire written by Eberhard Sauer and published by British Archaeological Reports Oxford Limited. This book was released on 1996 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The decline of Mithraism in the fourth century AD is used as a case-study for understanding the end of other classes of `paganism' in the Roman western provinces. The author reviews epigraphic and numismatic evidence to date the final uses of Mithraea. He then discusses examples of wilful damage to Mithraic monuments. Drawing all this archaeological evidence into a historical framework, Sauer argues that rather than losing its social function as the Roman army became splintered, Mithraism was a healthy religion with active shrines until the very late fourth century. Rather than fading away, its desecrated monuments indicate that the religion was the victim of a sustained Christian attack which was also directed at other established faiths in the western provinces.
