Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Wesleyan Methodist Foreign Missions This History appears at a moment when the mission ary spirit of Methodism has found memorable expression in the removal of a burdensome debt and a large addition to the annual income of the Society. The facts given in this volume abundantly justify the confidence of our Church, and show that the sacrifices it has made during the last century and a quarter for the spread of the gospel are bearing fruit for which we can never cease to be grateful to God. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Wesleyan Methodist Foreign Missions This History appears at a moment when the missionary spirit of Methodism has found memorable expression in the removal of a burdensome debt and a large addition to the annual income of the Society. The facts given in this volume abundantly justify the confidence of our Church, and show that the sacrifices it has made during the last century and a quarter for the spread of the gospel are bearing fruit for which we can never cease to be grateful to God. If the History helps in any measure to supply fuller knowledge of the work and workers of the past and the tasks of the present, the writer will be well rewarded for the enormous labour involved in preparing such a record. The history of each mission can be traced chronologically by following the references given in the Index. The penny History of A fissions may also be of service for more general distribution. The proof-sheets have been read by the Revs. J. Milton Brown, W. H. Findlay, M.A., and Henry Haigh, to whom the author is greatly indebted for many valuable corrections and suggestions. Miss Hellier has also kindly revised the passage about the Women's Auxiliary. Any help towards making the volume more complete and reliable at any point will be welcomed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wesley's World Parish: A Sketch of the Hundred Years' Work of the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society Help has been furnished and material derived from sources, public and private, too numerous to specify we ask our friends kindly to accept this general acknowledgment of indebtedness. The sections on the several foreign districts have been submitted to missionary experts, from whom valuable corrections and suggestions have been received. In view of the forthcoming History, further assistance of this nature will be welcome from any informed reader. For companion maps, we refer the reader to the World Atlas of Christian Missions lately published on behalf of the Student Volunteer Movement. The outline-maps supplied in the Annual Report of the Missionary Society, and in the last issue of the Helpers' Union Manual may serve the purpose, if no other aid of the kind is at hand. History should always be read-with the Atlas at one's elbow. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Adventures in Faith in Foreign Lands: A Glance at the Salient Events in the History of Southern Methodist Missions IN writing this book I have had in mind, not a comprehensive history, but rather a suggestive sketch that would contain sufficient information to give it permanent inspirational value. This limitation, together with the physical limitations of the volume, necessitated leaving out many things of general interest. There is no mention, for instance, of living missionaries, except a few who had a hand in the foundation work of their respective missions, nor have I tried to give fitting recognition or praise to the work or character of the foundation builders, except in rare instances where the general aim of the book seemed to demand it. I do not think, however, that I have omitted anything that is essential to my pur pose, and I am sure that if our heroes had been consulted about the matter they would have pre ferred a simple book of praiseworthy achieve. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foreign Missions Reviewed: With Suggestions for the Formation of a Friends' Missionary Society Thousands now attend Christian worship, the field is but scantily supplied with labourers, and, like India, presents a most favourable opening for the establishment of a Foreign Mission. The introduction of Christianity among the Isles of the Pacific also abounds with God's providences and interpositions. In some instances the people in expectation of the missionary ship cast away their idols, erected places for public worship, and waited for the coming of the messengers of peace. Before the gospel was introduced, and while the natives were expecting missionaries, they were known to assemble at six o'clock on Sabbath morning, sit in silence an hour or more, and repeat this a second or even a third time during the day. The Wesleyan Missionary Society has, according to last year's report, 909 missionaries now engaged in foreign lands, besides a much larger number of native assistants, and not a few of them are earnestly labouring in the far-off Isles of the Pacific. John Hunt was a bright example of these self denying labourers. In his youth he had many doubts and fears about his ministry, yet one of his elders cheered him onwards by quaintly observing, If the Lord calls thee to the work, He'll give thee tools to work with. For five long years he worked hard in Fiji, with little evidence of success. He translated Scriptures. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
