Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the Norman Conquest of England I have here told, in the shape of a primer, the same tale which I have already told in five large volumes. I have only to say that, though the tale told is the same, yet the little book is not an abridgement of the large one, but strictly the same tale told afresh. I should be well pleased if I am able some day to tell the same tale on a third and intermediate scale. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Anglo-Saxons: From the Earliest Period to the Norman Conquest For the historical materials of this volume, I have been mainly indebted to the sterling and valuable work of the late Mr. Sharon Turner, who, during a long life, neglected no oppor tunity of acquiring information on the subject. I have before. On several occasions, had to acknowledge his kind and liberal assistance in historical inquiries and now that he is no more, gratify myself by again recording my obligations, and bearing testimony to the value of his labours. Many other works on anglo-saxon History, Manners, and Literature have been con sulted, but Turner left me very little to glean elsewhere. Download or read book Wulf the Saxon written by G. A. Henty and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wulf the Saxon: A Story of the Norman Conquest Although the immediate results of the Battle of Hastings may have been of less importance to the world than were those of some other great battles, the struggle has, in the long run, had a greater influence upon the destiny of mankind than any other similar event that has ever taken place. That admixture of Saxon, Danish, and British races which had come to be known under the general name of English, was in most respects far behind the rest of Europe. The island was, as it had always been, - except during the rule of two or three exceptionally strong kings, - distracted by internal dissensions. Broad lines of division still separated the North from the South, and under weak Kings the powerful Earls became almost independent. The enterprise that had distinguished their Saxon and Danish ancestors seems to have died out. There was a general indisposition to change, and except in her ecclesiastical buildings, England made but little progress in civilization from the time of Alfred to that of Harold. Its insular position cut it off from taking part in that rapid advance which, beginning in Italy, was extending throughout Europe. The arrival, however, of the impetuous Norman race, securing as it did a close connection with the Continent, quickened the intellect of the people, raised their intelligence, was of inestimable benefit to the English, and played a most important part in raising England among the nations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Norman Conquest of England, Vol. 4: Its Causes and Its Results The present volume contains the reign of Wil liam. I regret that the bulk to which the text has swelled has caused me to leave out several notes which were designed to have a place in the Appendix; but I believe that their substance will find a place as least as fitting among the more general disquisitions which I hope to give in the fifth volume. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from England Before the Norman Conquest: Being a History of the Celtic, Roman and Anglo-Saxon Periods Down to the Year A. D. 1066 HE main purpose of this short preface is to express my deep Obligation to many friends who have given me their assistance in revising and correcting Various parts of this volume. Three must be specially named. Mr. T. Rice Holmes, the author of Caesar's Conquest of Gaul, and of Ancient Britain and Caesar's Invasions, was good enough to look through the first four chapters, forming the prehistoric and early Celtic section, to make most valuable criticisms thereon, and to give me many fruitful suggestions. This part of my volume, indeed, may be said to be founded in a large measure on his researches, for his two books above mentioned were invaluable to me. Book Synopsis Danes, Saxons, and Normans by : J. G. Edgar
Download or read book Danes, Saxons, and Normans written by J. G. Edgar and published by Blurb. This book was released on 2019-05-08 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a sweeping history of the major events in British history from the ninth century AD to the end of the Norman Conquest more than 200 years later, featuring the fascinating stories of the series of Vikings, Saxons, and Normans who blazed their way across England during that tumultuous time. Read here of Rollo the Norman ("Rolfganger"), a Viking and first duke of Normandy, and his most famous descendent, William the Conqueror; and of the Danish invasion under Earl Godwin, the restoration of the Anglo-Saxon kings under Edward the Confessor, and many others, including the adventurers Siward the Dane, Harold Hardrada, and Hereward the Saxon. The overview shows how the Normans under Rolfganger forced a settlement in the dominions of Charles the Simple, while Alfred the Great was struggling with the Danes in England, and recounts the events which led to a connection between the courts of Rouen and Westminster, and to the invasion of England by William the Norman. It then traces the path of William the Conqueror's career from the coast of Sussex to the banks of the Humber and the "harrying of the north." It also dramatically reveals the struggles for power within the Norman king's house, and how, after the wars of succession, the Plantagenet house came to rule England. About the author: John George Edgar (1834-1864) was, despite his short life, a prolific English writer who produced fifteen books devoted to English and Scottish history, as well as being the first editor of Every Boy's Magazine. His life and work were tragically cut short by encephalemia at the age of thirty.
