Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the Church in Great Britain It is in the fourth century that we first hear, on what is pro bably sound evidence, of the name of a British Christian. Near where the town of S. Albans now stands there was a Roman camp, and there a soldier saved the life of a Christian priest, and from him learnt the faith of Christ. He was ordered to deny Christ, and do sacrifice to the Roman gods. He refused, and was martyred. His name was Alban, and some say (probably it is a mistake) that he had a companion named Amphi balus. On the place where he suffered, then called Verulamium, rose in later years a town and a great abbey which took its name from him. The persecution in which Alban was martyred soon passed away, and the number of Christians rapidly increased. In 314 three British bishops, with a priest and deacon, attended a church council at Arles, in southern Gaul. These bishops came from York, London, and Lincoln, all important cities in the fourth century. A few years later British bishops attended other councils (sardice, 343; Ariminum, Christian inscriptions survive in Dorset, Yorkshire, Gloucestershire, at Cirencester and at Bath and there were certainly Christian churches at Silchester and at Canterbury while the Romans still ruled the land. Early in the fifth century the Romans abandoned Britain. They left behind them an organised civilisation and a Christian Church which had spread to Cornwall and Wales, and was soon to extend its influence across the Tyne. The Church was in union with the Church over sea. It received and taught the Catholic faith. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the Church of England Christian faith was brought to its people. But by whose enthusiasm this bringing of the Faith came about it is impossible to say. There is an old legend that Joseph of Arimathea came with twelve companions and settled at Glastonbury, and in the ground there planted his staff, which budded and grew into the famous Holy Thorn. That beautiful story, however, is only first heard of many hundred years after S. Joseph was dead. The cause which most likely led to the heathen Britons being taught the faith was an outbreak of bitter persecution which fell upon the Christians in South - Eastern Gaul in the year 177. Just as we read in the New Testament that by reason of the persecution of Stephen, Philip and others were scattered abroad, so, too, in all probability as a result of the persecu tion at Lyons and Vienne, fugitives fled along the great Roman roads to cross the Channel and hide in Britain, as in an earlier day fugitives from the rule of Julius Caesar had also done. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cathedrals of Great Britain: Their History and Architecture In this volume I have attempted to give an architectural description of all the cathedral churches of England, Wales, and Scotland, together with a brief history of each see. In order to include any adequate account of each church and bishopric in one volume of portable size, which may be of use to visitors in their travels, much compression has been necessary, but it is hoped that nothing of importance has been omitted which might be useful to those who would read aright the architectural history of our great churches. On account of their immense importance in the history of Gothic art, it has been thought well to include in this volume some account of the churches of Westminster and Beverley. At the close of each history of a cathedral will be found a record of the principal building dates and dimensions, and also a brief account of the chief places and churches of interest in the city or neighbourhood which it is advisable to visit. I desire to express my grateful thanks to all who have kindly assisted in the preparation of this work, to the deans and canons-in-residence who have often guided me by their counsel during my study of their cathedrals, and also to the vergers who have readily afforded me much valuable help. More especially do I wish to thank the Deans of Lincoln, Ely, Chester and Gloucester, Canon Tristram of Durham, Bishop Anson of Lichfield, and Archdeacon Richardson of Southwell, for their courtesy and kindly interest. I have also to record my obligations to the work of many previous writers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chapters of Early English Church History The following Chapters are an expansion of Lectures which have been delivered to my Class, while we had Bede's 'History' before us with a view to the Theological Final School. Wishing to connect them, in their present form, with their original purpose, I have retained a few colloquial phrases, and a few local allusions, which seemed natural in addressing a number of Oxford students, of whom several were personally well known to me. The first or introductory Chapter is devoted to the history of the ancient British Church. The general subject of the rest of the volume is the Age of the Conversion of the Old-English people to Christianity: a great, though comparatively a brief period, extending but little beyond a century, and closing naturally with the death, in 709, of their greatest native Bishop, himself the evangeliser of those among them who, from a peculiar isolation, were the last to receive the Faith. My obligations to the 'Councils and Ecclesiastical Documents, ' edited by the late Mr. Haddan and by Professor Stubbs, will be apparent throughout these pages. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the Ancient Diocese of Exeter: From the Conquest to the Church Congress of 1894, With Appendix The present work is an attempt to furnish to readers, who hesitate to accept the statement of the Church's continuity, an account of occurrences and of eminent and of remarkable persons who have passed across the stage of Church life in this particular part of Great Britain, without any attempt to ex plain or palliate their conduct. They are not simply successive scenes of clerical life. This has been chiefly done by reference to inaccessible mss. And rare printed books. The Church Congress of 1894 registered an epoch in the life of the Church of England in the most remarkable sphere of her work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Church in the Eighteenth Century The authors are indebted to their reviewers for many kind remarks and much careful criticism. They have endeavoured to correct all errors which have been thus pointed out to them. As the nature of this work has sometimes been a little mis apprehended, it should be added that its authors at no time intended it to be a regular history. When they first mapped out their respective shares in the joint undertaking, their design nad been to write a number of short essays relating to many different features in the religion and Church history of England in the Eighteenth Century. This general purpose was adhered to and it was only after much deliberation that the word Chapters was substituted for Essays.' There was, however, one important modification. Fewer subjects were, in the issue, specifically dis cussed, but these more in detail while some questions - such, ' for instance, as that of the Church in the Colonies - were scarcely touched upon. Hence a certain disproportion of treatment, which a general introductory chapter could but partially remedy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A BRIEF HISTORY of PRINTING IN ENGLAND England was slow to take up printing and slow and backward in the development of it. It was 25 years after the invention of printing before any printing was done in England. It was many years after that before the work of the English printers could compare with that done on the continent. The reason for this is to be found in the conditions of the country itself. Although the two great universities had long been in existence, Oxford dating back to 1167 and Cambridge to 1209, England as a whole was a backward country. In culture and the refinements of civilization, as well as in many more practical things, England was not so far advanced as the rest of Europe nor was it to be so for many years to come. England at this time was an agricultural and grazing country. A colony of Flemings had been brought over to start the cloth industry. There was still, nevertheless, a large export of wool to Flanders, which was there woven and sent back as cloth. The English nobles lived largely on their estates, looking after their tenants, hunting for diversion, and doing a little fighting occasionally when life became otherwise unbearably uninteresting. They were not an educated class and the peasantry were profoundly ignorant. The cities which, as always, depended upon manufacture and commerce were just beginning to grow, with the exception of some of the seaport towns which were already prosperous and wealthy. Not only was this general condition true, but there were special conditions which rendered the middle of the fifteenth century unfavorable to culture and to the introduction of a new invention auxiliary to culture. In 1450 England was shaken and horrified by the bloody insurrection of peasants, with its attendant outrages, known as Jack Cade’s Revolt. Scarcely had order been restored when a disputed succession to the crown plunged the country into the bloody civil war between the adherents of the Houses of York and Lancaster, known as the Wars of the Roses. This period of civil strife lasted for thirty years and affected the general welfare of England very seriously. It was especially marked by mortality among the noblest families in the realm, many of which were actually exterminated. Some time within this bloody half-century the art of printing was introduced into England. There is in existence a book printed in Oxford and dated on the title page 1468. Upon the existence of this book, and upon a somewhat doubtful legend, has been built a claim that English printing originated in Oxford. This claim, however, has practically ceased to be maintained. The legend appears to be baseless, and it has been generally concluded that the date is a misprint and that it should be 1478, an X having been dropped in writing the Roman date, a not uncommon error in publications of this period. Historians have now generally agreed that the introduction of printing in England is due to William Caxton, one of the most interesting figures in the whole annals of printing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Turning Points of English Church History The plan of this little book is, not to give a connected history of the Church of England, but to put before the reader some of its principal points, especially those which will help him to understand the Church questions of the present day. It has not been thought necessary in such a sketch as this to quote authorities but it may be desirable to state that pains have been taken to make the work accurate and impartial. To secure this the more effectually, the writer is permitted to say, that the proof sheets have been carefully revised by the Rev. W. Stubbs, Regius Professor of Modern History at Oxford, one of our greatest authorities on ecclesiastical history. He is not to be held answerable for any opinions the work may contain, but his corrections and suggestions have added to its value, and his supervision will give the reader confidence in its general correctness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Series of Brief Historical Sketches of the Church of England: And of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States The greater part of this tract was originally prepared as a series of Lectures for the benefit of the writers own congregation, and was delivered in that form several years ago. He has hoped to see a short and lucid statement of the prominent points in the History of the Church of England given to the public, by some one abler and better informed than himself; but having waited some time in vain, his conviction of the importance of the subjects herein discussed, and the advice of judicious friends, have induced him to publish these pages. He hopes they may be found useful to communicants of the Church who may not have time nor opportunity to examine larger works; and he sincerely trusts that they may be read by others also who are willing to follow truth, when they are satisfied that it is truth, even though it should cross their prejudices, or lead them to conclusions directly contrary to those which they had previously held. The Author is indebted to the kind assistance of his friend, the Rev. C. T. Quintard, Rector of the Church of the Advent, Nashville, for many of the notes found in these pages, and for many references to authorities which he could not otherwise have obtained except at the expense of much time and labor.
