This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Short History of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia This brief history of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia was prepared as a contribution to the volume issued in commemoration of Founders' Week, so successfully celebrated from the fourth to the tenth of October, 1908. The length of the article was determined by the number of pages available in the distribution of the matter composing the book and the story is, therefore, necessarily "short." The Notices of Morton and Ruschenberger have been of assistance in preparing the earlier portion. The sketch may be regarded as merely preliminary to a detailed history of the Academy to be issued in connection with the proposed celebration of the Centenary of the society in 1912. It is sent out in this form with the hope that it will, by eliciting comment, criticism, and perhaps correction, help to make the larger work of more permanent value. Any assistance to this end will be gratefully accepted by the author. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2007-12 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since its foundation in 1812, the Academy of Natural Sciences of Phila. has preserved manuscript documents even after the information has been published. The secretaries, curators, librarians, editors & other officers of the Academy had all cached such papers somewhere for posterity. These holdings were largely brought together by Edward Nolan for his history to celebrate the 100th anniversary. He had hoped to have his long history published & presented as a memorial at that time. When funds were not available for printing, the ¿Short History¿ listed in the bibliography was used instead. The materials published here in microfilm form have always been locked away in the Academy¿s hall & always remained in the custody of the librarian.

Download or read book Relic Hunters written by James E. Snead and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-30 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relic Hunters is a study of the complex relationship between the people of 19th century America with the material antiquities of North America's indigenous past. As scholars struggled to explain their existence, farmers in Ohio were plowing up arrowheads, building their houses atop burial mounds, and developing their own ideas about antiquity. They experienced the new country as a "place with history" reflected in material traces that became important touch points for scientific knowledge, but for American cultural identity as well. Relic Hunters traces the encounter with American antiquities from 1812 to 1879. This encompasses the period when archaeology took root in the United States: it also spans the "deep settlement" of the Midwest and sectional strife both before and after the Civil War. At the center of the story is the first iconic find of American archaeology, known as "the Kentucky Mummy." Discovered deep in a cavern, this dessicated burial became the subject of scholarly competition, traveling exhibitions, and even poetry. The book uses the theme of the Kentucky Mummy to structure the broader story of the public and American antiquities, a tour that leads through rural museums, mound excavations, lecture tours, shady deals, and ultimately into the famous attic of the Smithsonian Institution. Ultimately, Relic Hunters is a story of the American landscape, and of the role of archaeology in shaping that place. Derived from letters, memoranda, and reports found in more than a dozen archives, this is a unique account of a critical encounter that shaped local and national identity in ways that are only now being explored.
Book Synopsis Backwoods Utopias by : Arthur Bestor
Download or read book Backwoods Utopias written by Arthur Bestor and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2018-07-09 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The new society that the world awaited might yet be born in the humble guise of a backwoods village. This was the belief shared by the many groups which moved into the American frontier to create experimental communities—communities which they hoped would be models for revolutionary changes in religion, politics, economics, and education in American society. For, as James Madison wrote, the American Republic was "useful in proving things before held impossible." The communitarian ideal had its roots in the radical Protestant sects of the Reformation. Arthur Bestor shows the connection between the "holy commonwealths" of the colonial period and the nonsectarian experiments of the nineteenth century. He examines in particular detail Robert Owen's ideals and problems in creating New Harmony. Two essays have been added to this volume for the second edition. In these, "Patent-Office Models of the Good Society" and "The Transit of Communitarian Socialism to America," Bestor discusses the effects of the frontier and of the migration of European ideas and people on these communities. He holds that the communitarians could believe in the possibility of nonviolent revolution through imitation of a small perfect society only as long as they saw American institutions as flexible. By the end of the nineteenth century, as American society became less plastic, belief in the power of successful models weakened.
