Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pictures of Rhode Island: In the Past, 1642 1833 The plan pursued by Miss Kimball has been to re print the texts exactly, copying, in cases where there are several editions of a book, from the earliest acces sible edition in which her extract is contained. The extracts are arranged in a chronological order, the date assigned to each being that of the year in which it was written rather than that in which it was published, if the two are known to differ. To each piece she has prefixed a short heading, intended to show who the author was, what was the point of view from which he looked at Rhode Island, or under what circumstances he wrote. The source whence the text is derived is scrupulously stated, for Miss Kimball has desired that the book should be, as I am sure it will be, of use and value to careful historical students, as well as a source of entertainment to those who love to read Rhode Island history with their feet on the fender. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Rhode Island Normal School Several months ago, I was invited to assist in the chapel exercises at the Rhode Island Normal School. At the close of the brief service, I was asked by Principal Alger to speak a word as to the early days of the present school, to which I gladly responded in words of congratulation and of historic reminiscence. Principal Alger then invited me to visit the session of the Senior class and I was introduced by him as a former Commissioner of Public Schools. Singularly, the class was studying the story of the State Normal School and I was urged to occupy the period of recitation by a review of the school history. This I did to the apparent gratification of the principal and the class, all of whom stated that they found it difficult to discover the facts of the founding. I endeavored to make very clear to the class, the reasons for the failure of the first school, and the conditions in educational affairs in Rhode Island in the interim, between the first and second schools. The suggestion was then made that I ought to write a history of the Normal School, inasmuch as I was the only survivor of the active educational workers of that period, and the only one intimately acquainted with all the details of its founding. I made a half promise that, some day, I would. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Once Upon a Time in Rhode Island This book is published by the Society of Colonial Dames in Rhode Island for the benefit of children in Rhode Island schools, and of Rhode Island children who, though not in school, ought to know and be interested in the early history of the State. Miss Pyle has not tried to settle the many disputed points in early Rhode Island history, or to make her book in any way a systematic narrative account. Her object has been, rather, to interest her readers in the past by a series of pictures or stories, presented with all possible accuracy in matters of fact, but at the same time in language suited to young people. In such a book, tradition and imagination have their place as well as assured fact, and a story may illuminate a period more effectively than an orderly narrative. Throughout the volume, controverted questions have, for obvious rea sons, been avoided SO far as possible, and, where they could not be avoided altogether, they have been handled impartially.
