Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A concise narrative history that brings the story of the Jewish people marvelously to life This is a sweeping and powerful narrative history of the Jewish people from biblical times to today. Based on the latest scholarship and richly illustrated, it is the most authoritative and accessible chronicle of the Jewish experience available. Michael Brenner tells a dramatic story of change and migration deeply rooted in tradition, taking readers from the mythic wanderings of Moses to the unspeakable atrocities of the Holocaust; from the Babylonian exile to the founding of the modern state of Israel; and from the Sephardic communities under medieval Islam to the shtetls of eastern Europe and the Hasidic enclaves of modern-day Brooklyn. The book is full of fascinating personal stories of exodus and return, from that told about Abraham, who brought his newfound faith into Canaan, to that of Holocaust survivor Esther Barkai, who lived on a kibbutz established on a German estate seized from the Nazi Julius Streicher as she awaited resettlement in Israel. Describing the events and people that have shaped Jewish history, and highlighting the important contributions Jews have made to the arts, politics, religion, and science, A Short History of the Jews is a compelling blend of storytelling and scholarship that brings the Jewish past marvelously to life.

Book excerpt: Since turning to the field of Jewish art over twenty years ago, Vivian Mann has concentrated on investigating Jewish ceremonial art within the dual contexts of Jewish law, and the history of decorative arts in general, including the ceremonial art made for the Church and the Mosque. The introduction to this volume considers classic rabbinic attitudes toward art and its relationship to spirituality. The remaining essays are divided into three groups: the first concerns medieval ceremonial art; the second, articles on the Jewish art of Muslim lands beginning with the early Middle Ages; and the third consists of essays on Judaica during the periods of the Renaissance and rococo.

Book excerpt: The story of dealers of Old Masters, champions of modern art, and victims of Nazi plunder. In Belonging and Betrayal, distinguished historian Charles Dellheim tells the story of the rise and fall of a small number of Jews, individuals, and families, who were merchants and connoisseurs as well as dealers and collectors of fine art. They competed and cooperated at various times and operated more often than not on both sides of the Atlantic. The protagonists of this story took a leading part in the critical transformations that shook the art world in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries: the great migration of Old Master paintings from Europe to the United States; and the eventual triumph of modern art as Jewish dealers became the modernists' champions. The story begins with the entry of Jewish dealers into the art world in the late nineteenth century and ends with the Nazi plunder of their collections. Along the way, the narrative takes us into a variety of European capitals--Paris, London, Berlin, and Vienna--as well as American cities, notably Boston and New York. It sets the protagonists' stories against the backdrop of the broader changes that affected their fortunes and transformed art and society: The gradual opening of high culture, the dynamics of assimilation, acculturation, and antisemitism, the decline of the landed classes, the ascent of a new capitalist elite, the cultural impact of the "Great War," and the Nazi war against the Jews.
