Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cabinet History of England, Scotland, and Ireland, Vol. 1: England The following volume is a part of an experiment to ascertain how far the most necessary portions of historical knowledge may, even in an abridged nar rative, be rendered acceptable to general readers. Neither my habitual relish for English history, nor the hazardous honor of acting with such fellow laborers, has blinded me to the difficulties of the attempt, which experience has shown to be more considerable than I apprehended they would prove. I need not compare the convenience of abridgment with the merits of circumstantial recital: both these sorts of historical composition have their use, and they must both always continue to be written. On behalf of such sketches, I may venture to take it, for granted that an outline may be useful as an introduction, and convenient as a remembrancer; that it is a particularly accessible manual for refer ence; and that it may contain all the information concerning the affairs of one people, which men of different pursuits, of little leisure, or of other coun tries, may think it necessary to have always within their reach. Book excerpt: Wirtten many years ago by Mary Parmele, she begins this book with the following passage:The remotest fact in the history of England is written in her rocks. Geology tells us of a time when no sea flowed between Dover and Calais, while an unbroken continent extended from the Mediterranean to the Orkneys. Huge mounds of rough stones called Cromlechs, have yielded up still another secret. Before the coming of the Keltic-Aryans, there dwelt there two successive races, whose story is briefly told in a few human fragments found in these "Cromlechs." These remains do not bear the royal marks of Aryan origin. The men were small in stature, with inferior skulls; and it is surmised that they belonged to the same mysterious branch of the human family as the Basques and Iberians, whose presence in Southern Europe has never been explained. When the Aryan came and blotted out these races will perhaps always remain an unanswered question. But while Greece was clothing herself with a mantle of beauty, which the world for two thousand years has striven in vain to imitate, there was lying off the North and West coasts of the European Continent a group of mist-enshrouded islands of which she had never heard.

This book is mainly an attempt to trace to their sources some of the currents which enter into the life of England to-day; and to indicate the starting-points of some among the various threads - legislative, judicial, social, etc. Which are gathered into the imposing strand of English Civilization in this closing 19th Century. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Child's History of England IF you look at a Map of the World, you will see, in the left hand upper corner of the Eastern Hemisphere, two Islands lying in the sea. They are England and Scotland, and Ireland. England and Scotland form the greater part of these Islands. Ireland is the next in Size. The little neighbouring islands, which are so small upon the Map as to be mere dots, are chiefly little bits of Scotland - broken off, I dare say, in the course of a great length of time, by the power of the restless water. What did the Conquest mean for England? Domesday Book, curfew bell, Norman dresses, Norman masters and manners, - a child gets no more from Dickens. To be sure, he does not clamour for more. Johnny Lockhart sent a message to his grandfather, he very much dislikes the chapter on Civilisation, and it is his desire that you will never say any more about it, for he dislikes it extremely. Dirks were enough for Master Lockhart. But, if one may speak for oneself (wtat. Sir Walter's exposi tion of the feudal ideal was lucid and highly interesting Here, one thought, was a right notion of how to live; and it is probable that, if children are to be taught history, they can easily be made to see that feudalism was a society with an idea. Dickens makes no effort to reach a child's intelligence on this point. Take, again, the Reformation. What notion does a child get from Dickens about the Re formation - about Luther's ideas On the other hand, Dickens writes here with a fine impartiality, and lets a child understand that the Reformation was dishonest, brutal, and blundering; that Henry VIII., being his own Pope, im partially burned both sides, and was, in a famous phrase. Book excerpt: The lines upon which the government has developed to its present constitutional form are chiefly lines of resistance to Oppressive enactments in these two matters. The dynastic and military history of England, although picturesque and interesting, is really only a narrative of the external causes which have impeded the nation's growth toward its ideal of the greatest possible good to the greatest possible num ber. The historic development of Ireland and Scotland, and the events which have brought these two countries into organic union with England are, of necessity, very briefly related.
