Book Synopsis Corpus of Hieroglyphic Luwian Inscriptions by : John David Hawkins
Download or read book Corpus of Hieroglyphic Luwian Inscriptions written by John David Hawkins and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2000 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an edition of the Hieroglyphic inscriptions of the Late Hittite states of Turkey and Syria. These inscriptions, surviving largely on stone, include monuments of kings to their reigns and works as well as the humbler memorials of subordinates. A few precious survivals of documents in the form of lead strips give us a different type of document: letters and economic texts. Recent discoveries have improved the decipherment and understanding of these inscriptions to a point where new and comprehensive translations can be offered, and the presentation of this in English will make them available for the first time to the wide audience of the English-speaking world. At the same time we are in a position to present more reliable texts than those which have appeared in editions hitherto regarded as standard.
Book Synopsis The Relative Clause in Biblical Hebrew by : Robert D. Holmstedt
Download or read book The Relative Clause in Biblical Hebrew written by Robert D. Holmstedt and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the result of 15 years of research on the ancient Hebrew relative clause as well as the effective application of modern linguistic approaches to an ancient language corpus. Though the ostensible topic is the relative clause, including a full discussion of the various relative words used to introduce Hebrew relative clauses and a detailed presentation of the relevant comparative Semitic data, this work also carefully navigates the challenges of analyzing a “dead” language and offers a methodological road map for the analysis of any feature of Biblical Hebrew grammar. With the appendixes of relative clause data, including the author’s English translations, the work aims at comprehensiveness, exhaustiveness, and full transparency in data, method, and theory.

Book excerpt: The Minoan Linear Signs have now been explained as Niger-Congo. And some twenty five full words have been related to Fula. Problematic words of Greek have also been given tentative African etymologies. A new African language, four thousand years old, has come to light in the Linear A documents. So we claim a decipherment, or at least the beginnings of a decipherment. Only time will give us a full solution. But we can say that the "e;unknown language"e; is no longer unknown. It is African.

Book Synopsis Corpus of Hieroglyphic Luwian Inscriptions by : John David Hawkins
Download or read book Corpus of Hieroglyphic Luwian Inscriptions written by John David Hawkins and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-03-04 with total page 846 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Luwian and the closely related Hittite are the oldest known languages of the Indo-European group. Luwian is written in two scripts: Cuneiform and its own Hieroglyphic, which survives mostly on stone monuments collected from Turkey and Syria. The texts fall into two main groups, those of the Hittite Empire (c. 1400–1200 B.C.), and those of the Iron Age (c. 1000–700 B.C.),with a transitional period (c. 1200–1000 B.C.). One of the editor’s principal research efforts has been the establishment of reliable texts presented in facsimile copies and photographs. His Inscriptions of the Iron Age were published as Vol. I in 2000, and the great Luwian-Phoenician Bilingual in collaboration with Halet Çambel as Vol. II in 1999. Vol. III will present the Inscriptions of the Hittite Empire along with the newly discovered Iron Age inscriptions, thus completing the whole corpus. It will then make available to the scholarly world the Luwian language in its Hieroglyphic manifestation, which will be of importance to philologists and ancient historians alike.
