Book excerpt: It's the middle of the night and Judith Lawton literally trips over Dante's bloody body lying in the middle of her kitchen floor. Her estranged husband is alive but barely and Judith is quickly put on the short list of suspects. In her search for what the torturers want, she's immediately thrust into a mystery jam-packed with elusive twists and turns. Judith's very existence depends on the explosive behavior of the would-be killers, who have made it clear that the ultimate safety of the object of their obsession could result in a death sentence. Dangerous people become her friends while friendly faces become suspect. Hungry for love and a little naïve, Judith finds romance in dangerous places. Terror is her constant companion as she desperately struggles to unravel the mystery that has consumed her world. Judith's whirlwind investigation draws her into Dante's colorful past, a past that includes New Orleans, Hong Kong, China and Dante's new love interest. Her perilous journey tests her sanity in what has become an insane world. Combining murder and mayhem with the madness of Mardi Gras, award-winning author, Laurie Ellis, keeps the suspense mounting right up to the very end. This is a real page-turner.

Book excerpt: This book presents an interpretation of Maurice Scève’s lyric sequence Délie, object de plus haulte vertu (Lyon, 1544) in literary relation to the Vita nuova, Commedia, and other works of Dante Alighieri. Dante’s subtle influence on Scève is elucidated in depth for the first time, augmenting the allusions in Délie to the Canzoniere of Petrarch (Francesco Petrarca). Scève’s sequence of dense, epigrammatic dizains is considered to be an early example, prior to the Pléiade poets, of French Renaissance imitation of Petrarch’s vernacular poetry, in a time when imitatio was an established literary practice, signifying the poet’s participation in a tradition. While the Canzoniere is an important source for Scève’s Délie, both works are part of a poetic lineage that includes Occitan troubadours, Guinizzelli, Cavalcanti, and Dante. The book situates Dante as a relevant predecessor and source for Scève, and examines anew the Petrarchan label for Délie. Compelling poetic affinities emerge between Dante and Scève that do not correlate with Petrarch.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “[A] stunning tale of academic fraud . . . shocking and compelling.”-The Washington Post Dave Tomar wrote term papers for a living. Technically, the papers were “study guides,” and the companies he wrote for-there are quite a few-are completely aboveboard and easily found with a quick web search. For as little as ten dollars a page, these paper mills provide a custom essay, written to the specifics of any course assignment. During Tomar's career as an academic surrogate, he wrote made-to-order papers for everything from introductory college courses to Ph.D. dissertations. There was never a shortage of demand for his services. The Shadow Scholar is the story of this dubious but all-too-common career. In turns shocking, absurd, and ultimately sobering, Tomar explores not merely his own misdeeds but the bureaucratic and cash-hungry colleges, lazy students, and even misguided parents who help make it all possible.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shadow of Dante: Being an Essay Towards Studying World, and His Pilgrimage Dante is a name unlimited in place and period. Not Italy, but the Universe, is his birthplace; not the fourteenth century, but all Time, is his epoch. He rises before us and above us like the Pyramids - awful, massive, solitary; the embodiment of the character, the realization of the science, of his clime and day; yet the outcome of a far wider past, the standard of a far wider future. Like the Pyramids, again, he is known to all by name and by pictorial representation; must we not add, like them unknown to most by actual sight and presence? Who among us has indeed experienced the soul-subduing hush of his solemnity? who beheld all average heights dwarfed by his sublimity? Even of his fellow-linguists how many have read his great poem through? One of themselves has said it - few have gone beyond the Inferno; nay, most have stopped short at two passages of the Inferno -- Francesca da Rimini and it Conte Ugolino.
