Download or read book War Sermons written by Gilles Teulié and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-03-26 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays ponders upon the intricate relations between the military and the spiritual from the Middle Ages to the present day. In order to analyse human attitudes towards conflicts, it is necessary to dwell upon the nebulous area where the religious and political spheres interweave so tightly that they become virtually impossible to distinguish. Indeed, despite remaining the responsibility of the state, the political decision to go to war depends heavily on some spiritual underpinning since, without a moral, ethical, or religious justification, it stands for gratuitous violence and is often equated with aggression. Situated as they are at the intersection of religious and political awareness, war sermons are an invaluable source of information regarding societies in times of conflict. Indeed, whether favourable or hostile to the waging of war, preachers participated in the edification of parishioners’ opinion. The writing, delivering or reading of sermons shaped the mental process of peoples who sought their ministers’ moral and spiritual guidance in times of crisis. This collection of essays offers contributions to the renewed debate on the function of war, its representations and its rhetoric as generators of identity.
Book Synopsis The Battle Against Slavery by : Paul L. Dawson
Download or read book The Battle Against Slavery written by Paul L. Dawson and published by Frontline Books. This book was released on 2022-03-24 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 13 December 1776, the Rev. William Turner preached the first avowedly anti-slavery sermon in the North of England. Copies of his sermon were distributed far and wide – in so doing, he had fired the first shot in the battle to end slavery had begun. Four years later, Rev. Turner, members of his congregation and the Rev. Christopher Wyvill founded ‘The Yorkshire Association’ to agitate for political and social reform. The Association sought universal suffrage, annual parliaments and the abolition of slavery. In the West Riding, despite furious opposition, by 1783 nearly 10,000 signatures were collected in support of the aims of the Association. Slavery, or rather its abolition, was now on the political agenda. The Battle Against Slavery charts the story of a group of West Riding radicals in their bid to abolish slavery both in the United Kingdom and abroad. Such became the influence of this group, whose Unitarian beliefs were illegal in Britain, that the general election of 1806 in Yorkshire was fought on an abolitionist platform. At a time when the rest of the world engaged in slavery, this small body was fighting almost single-handedly to end such practices. Gradually, their beliefs began to spread across the country and across the Channel to France, the principles of which found resonance during the French Revolution and even across the Atlantic to America. At a time, today, when the history of slavery is the subject of considerable debate worldwide, this revealing insight into the abolitionist movement, which demonstrates how ordinary men and women battled against governments and the establishment, needs to be told. The Battle Against Slavery adds an important dimension to the continuing debate over Britain’s, and other nations’, involvement in the slave trade and demonstrates how the determination of just a few right-minded people can change world opinion forever.
Book Synopsis Romanticism, Publishing and Dissent by : H. Braithwaite
Download or read book Romanticism, Publishing and Dissent written by H. Braithwaite and published by Springer. This book was released on 2002-12-10 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joseph Johnson (1738-1809) was arguably the foremost bookseller of the late eighteenth century in England, publishing Joseph Priestley, William Cowper, Anna Laetitia Barbauld, Mary Wollstonecroft, Wordsworth and Coleridge, among others, and his output closely linked to the turbulent events of his age. This book seeks to reassess the reputation of a man unfairly condemned in his own time as a dangerously 'radical' publisher and how far the works he published tended to promote the case for religious and political reform.
