Book Synopsis Prophecy and Eschatology in the Transatlantic World, 1550−1800 by : Andrew Crome
Download or read book Prophecy and Eschatology in the Transatlantic World, 1550−1800 written by Andrew Crome and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-22 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prophecy and millennial speculation are often seen as having played a key role in early European engagements with the new world, from Columbus’s use of the predictions of Joachim of Fiore, to the puritan ‘Errand into the Wilderness’. Yet examinations of such ideas have sometimes presumed an overly simplistic application of these beliefs in the lives of those who held to them. This book explores the way in which prophecy and eschatological ideas influenced poets, politicians, theologians, and ordinary people in the Atlantic world from the sixteenth to the late eighteenth century. Chapters cover topics ranging from messianic claimants to the Portuguese crown to popular prophetic almanacs in eighteenth-century New England; from eschatological ideas in the poetry of George Herbert and Anne Bradstreet, to the prophetic speculation surrounding the Evangelical revivals. It highlights the ways in which prophecy and eschatology played a key role in the early modern Atlantic world.

Book Synopsis Catalogue of the Pepys Library at Magdalene College, Cambridge: Census of printed books by : Pepys Library
Download or read book Catalogue of the Pepys Library at Magdalene College, Cambridge: Census of printed books written by Pepys Library and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 2004 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continuing work on Pepys's library, and recent discoveries, necessitate expansion of the content and entries in the original volumes. This is the first in the Supplementary Series. Pepys's library has been, as he directed, preserved intact at his old Cambridge college since 1724. Between 1978 and 1994 a complete catalogue was published for the first time. The present title, essential to all users of the first volume in that series, N.A. Smith's Printed Books, vastly enhances the range of information available. The short-title arrangement of Printed Books is replaced by a numerical listing which follows the library's shelf-order; many entries have been extended, and where possible updated with reference to new scholarship; the location of MSS and other material treated elsewhere in the catalogue is also indicated, providing for the first time a published conspectus of the whole library. Extensive indexes have been provided for authors and ancillary contributors, subjects, printers and places of publication, and references which reflect Pepys himself and his bibliophilism.Concordances identify the Pepys books covered by STC, Wing, ESTC and other bibliographies. Dr CHARLES KNIGHTON gained his Ph D from Magdalene College, Cambridge.

Book Synopsis Pulpit in Parliament by : John Frederick Wilson
Download or read book Pulpit in Parliament written by John Frederick Wilson and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before the outbreak of hostilities between Charles I and the Long Parliament, the King had authorized a regular monthly fast for the realm which members of parliament later adopted as a program of national humiliation. At the invitation of individual members of parliament, two preachers, generally leading puritan clerics connected with the Westminster Assembly, which had been convened for the purpose of reforming the Church of England, were invited to speak. Drawing from some 240 published sermons, Professor Wilson presents a survey of the program, giving detailed scrutiny to the form and contents of the sermons. His aim throughout is to clarify the puritans' conceptions of the relationship between their religious movement and the political events of the period, and to assess the importance of these sermons for the interpretation of Puritanism. Originally published in 1969. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Book Synopsis Gangraena and the Struggle for the English Revolution by : Ann Hughes
Download or read book Gangraena and the Struggle for the English Revolution written by Ann Hughes and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2004-09-23 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive study of Gangraena, an intemperate anti-sectarian polemic written by a London Presbyterian Thomas Edwards and published in three parts in 1646. These books, which bitterly opposed any moves to religious toleration, were the most notorious and widely debated texts in a Revolution in which print was crucial to political moblization. They have been equally important to later scholars who have continued the lively debate over the value ofGangraena as a source for the ideas and movements its author condemned. This study includes a thorough assessment of the usefulness of Edwards's work as a historical source, but goes beyond this to provide a wide-ranging discussion of the importance of Gangraena in its own right as a lively work of propaganda, crucial to Presbyterian campaigning in the mid-1640s.Contemporary and later readings of this complex text are traced through a variety of methods, literary and historical, with discussions of printed responses, annotations and citation. Hughes's work thus provides a vivid and convincing picture of revolutionary London and a reappraisal of the nature of 1640s Presbyterianism, too often dismissed as conservative. Drawing on the newer histories of the book and of reading, Hughes explores the influence of Edwards's distasteful but compellingbook.
