Book excerpt: Physicians, health researchers, and nurses make extensive use of focus groups. Thus, researchers and readers need access to the realm of applications of focus group methodology in the wide variety of medical and health sciences. In this second installment of a two-volume examination of ten recent years (1998-2007) of focus group studies and research literature, author Graham R. Walden turns his attention from the arts, humanities, and non-medical sciences to the medical and health sciences, concentrating on a broad range of studies in books, book chapters, and journal articles that are available in English. Focus Groups, Volume II: A Selective Annotated Bibliography: Medical and Health Sciences covers over 500 articles on a multitude of topics in the medical and health sciences, such as the health profession and the practice of medicine, public health, and several different bodily systems and types of diseases. The annotations in this bibliography describe the content of a source document to help the reader discern whether pursuit of the full text is appropriate or desirable. This book offers significant benefits to all medical personnel; graduate and undergraduate students; professional focus group practitioners; and individuals seeking increased awareness of studies that have been conducted in the health arena.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ÔThis book provides a thorough review and compendium of important family business research. It should be in the personal library of every family business scholar and graduate student involved in this vital field of study.Õ Ð Michael A. Hitt, Texas A&M University, US ÔA systematic review of the field and an incredibly useful reference book for anyone involved in studying or teaching family business.Õ Ð Sara Carter OBE FRSE, Strathclyde Business School, UK ÔThis book offers a succinct but thorough overview of how our understanding of significant issues in family business has evolved through rigorous research. This annotated bibliography of the 215 top-cited family business studies provides the empirical evidence and the basis for insightful comments from the authors on topics which will benefit from further scholarly debate and research. The authors are to be congratulated for making accessible those research contributions which have the potential to make a meaningful difference to the practice of family business.Õ Ð Jill Thomas, The University of Adelaide Business School, Australia ÔI highly recommend the annoted bibliography by De Massis, Sharma, Chua, and Chrisman to experienced scholars as well as to incoming researchers. The authors selected carefully (and in a transparent manner) relevant papers and summarized them in a way that provides a helpful basis for future research. Well done!Õ Ð Sabine B. Rau, WHUÐOtto Beisheim School of Management, Germany ÔA welcome addition to the field of family business studies! Offers an update and thorough compendium of relevant research conducted within the last 15 years. A most useful reference for doctoral students, established scholars and thoughtful practitioners. Importantly, the first three chapters offer critical commentary and synthesis that go well beyond what one typically finds in an annotated bibliography. Overall, this book offers a solid foundation for moving the study of family business forward.Õ Ð Lloyd Steier, University of Alberta, Canada ÔIf I had been asked to suggest the currently most-needed editorial endeavor for advancing family business studies, I would have answered with no hesitation: an up-to-date annotated bibliography. The fieldÕs growth over the past 15 years has been so intense, that even experts who devote most of their research efforts to family business Ð not to mention younger scholars approaching the field Ð will significantly benefit from De Massis, Sharma, Chua, and ChrismanÕs indispensable work.Õ Ð Carlo Salvato, Bocconi University, Italy and Associate Editor, Family Business Review This book catalogues the 215 most-cited empirical, theoretical, and practical articles on family business published in 33 journals since 1996. Researchers, students, and practicing managers will find it indispensable as a quick reference and guide to what we have learned about family firms. Annotations for the articles consist of: summary of key findings, research questions, contributions, and research implications. They also include a detailed description of the methodologies, empirical data, definitions, and conceptual models used. In addition, the book features chapters that review the literature, discuss how family businesses have been defined, present recent trends in family business empirical research, and provide an agenda for future research. Scholars, researchers and PhD students in the fields of family business, entrepreneurship, organization theory, management, economics, finance, anthropology, sociology and business history will find this compendium insightful. The topics covered in the book will also prove to be essential to practitioners Ð both advisors and operators of family enterprises Ð as it will provide evidence-based knowledge on the issues and dilemmas faced by them in everyday life.

Book excerpt: Peaceful peoples are societies that have developed harmonious social structures which allow them to get along with each other, and with outsiders, without violence. Most of these peoples foster a spirit of cooperation rather than competition, promote sharing rather than glorifying greed, and live in harmony with the earth as well as with other people. Perhaps most importantly, they believe that peacefulness is the defining characteristic of their humanity. Some of the peoples included in the book are from the Western tradition such as the Amish, Hutterites, Mennonites, Quakers, and Tristan Islanders; from South America, the Piaroa; from Africa, the Fipa; from South Asia, the Paliyan, Malapandaram, and Nayaka; from Southeast Asia, the Semai, Chewong, and Buid; and from Micronesia, the Ifaluk. This selected bibliography includes annotated references to books, articles, and other English-language publications that provide significant information about a peaceful society. The author has combed the literature of fields such as anthropology, psychology, sociology, history, and religious studies for appropriate works, with a cutoff date of 1992. Scholars and peace activists who are interested in societies that foster peacefulness have difficulty finding references to the literature. Numerous indexes and abstracts do not include subject headings such as "peaceful peoples." Furthermore, indexing services often do not cover chapters in edited volumes, an important part of this literature. The book includes a very detailed name and subject index that provides access to the intriguing social psychological, and cultural similarities—and difference—existing among the peoples.

Book excerpt: As the Kurdish question becomes more prominent in Middle Eastern politics, it is attracting attention from the media, the academic community, and governmental and non-governmental organizations. Swamped with questions from the press and academic departments, students of Kurdish topics have needed a comprehensive bibliography on the Kurds. This book meets that need. An introductory essay provides users with general background information on the Kurds and Kurdistan. With over 800 entries, the annotated bibliography provides information on the most important works about the Kurds and Kurdistan published from World War II through 1996. Emphasizing recent titles, the book focuses on English-language scholarly works. Arranged in topical chapters, the book opens with a section on general works, then covers travel works, history and archaeology, politics, minorities and religion in Kurdistan, society, economy, language and education, literature and folklore, and culture and arts.
