Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Second Book for Reading and Spelling In some cases, the teacher will probably find it best, to require the scholar to spell only a part of the columns, when he first reads the Lessons. Afi ter going over a few of them in this way, he may go back, read the Lessons again, and spell all the words. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from McGuffey's Newly Revised Eclectic Second Reader: Containing Progressive Lessons in Reading and Spelling; Revised and Improved The unparalleled demand for the Second Reader, as well as the other volumes of the Eclectic Series, has rendered it necessary to issue a new edition, printed on new stereotype plates. This opportunity has been embraced to revise, re-model, and greatly enlarge the book, so as to render it still more worthy of the liberal patronage it has already received. Preparatory to this revision, many school books and the best juvenile writings of England, France, and Germany were obtained, and free use has been made of them. In regard to all these, however, one rule has been followed, namely, to alter and abridge, almost invariably, and, in some cases, entirely to rewrite the extracts which have been taken. The engravings, many of which are from original designs by one of the best artists in the country, are of a superior order. In making his selections, the Compiler has aimed to introduce only such matter as will interest, as well as instruct the minds of youth. Consequently, simple stories, anecdotes, &c., have been much used, as the means of conveying to their minds the purest moral and religious principles; but nothing sectarian in its tendency has been admitted. Great care has been taken in regard to progression, that the learner may proceed by gradual steps; and always, after reading one lesson, be prepared for the following one. Much attention has been paid to the Spelling Lessons. These have been invariably selected from the reading lessons; and many words, especially the more difficult ones, are repeated, until the scholar is supposed to be perfectly familiar with them. The book is now submitted to parents and teachers, for their examination and decision. Should it prove acceptable to them, and be deemed a worthy auxiliary in the work of education, one great object of its publication will have been attained. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Howell First Reader All the spellings in the howell primer are repeated in this book; and for any child it is a complete introduction to reading in the English language. When he masters the howell first reader, he can read anything he may have occasion to read. For the beginner in this series does more than learn mere words; he learns the spelling ele ments, and thus becomes an independent reader. This book begins with the spellings taught in the howell primer; pages 9 - 20 contain nothing new in the way of spelling to the child that has mastered the Primer, though some new words are met with here. The method is the same as that of the Primer only one new spelling element is taught at a time thus the grading is regular and easy. Without taking too much space for a discussion of methods of teaching (which would be unfair to the purchasers of a book for children), the author would urge teachers to see that their pupils learn the word lists; review them often; a mastery of them will give pupils power to read not only this book, but any other book. Do not however, require beginners to learn by heart the spelling of all these words if elementary pupils can read them easily, that is enough to expect. A manual on the teaching of elementary reading, with special application to the howell primer and the howell first reader, is in preparation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Every-Day Speller: Third Book, Grades Five and Six These Every-day Spelling books have been prepared in view of the results of extensive experience with the teaching of spelling, and also of the conclusions of recent investigations respecting (1) the words which should be taught in the ele mentary school because they are likely to be used by the majority of people in every-day life; (2) the ways in which a pupil learns to spell most readily and effectively; and (3) the crucial parts of difficult words to which the learner needs to give particular attention. At the close of the Second, Third and Fourth Books there is given a detailed presentation of all the principles and methods upon which the books are based, and the teacher is referred to this statement for information re garding the grounds upon which words have been chosen for the different grades, and the various methods of teaching them. It will be enough to say here that the authors have endeavored to make spelling books which are closely adapted to the practi cal needs of pupils and teachers in elementary schools. Every word included in these books has been carefully examined with respect alike to the probability of its being of practical value to pupils, and the methods of presenting -it so that it can be read ily and accurately used when once learned. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Secondary Lessons, or the Improved Reader: Intended as a Sequel to the Franklin Primer It is the Opinion of some, who have speculated much on the subject, and who are entitled to great respect, that reading should commence with the pronunciation of sentences, while spelling is made a subsequent busi ness. That this theory is incomparably better than that, which has come down from our fathers, and which has hitherto controlled our raetics, there is perhaps no reasonable doubt. But til it is proved by thorough experiments, the author must be allowed to believe that there is an intermediate course far better than either. For him it is hard to conceive, how the child is to arrive at such a ready distinction of one word from another, as even tolerable reading must require, with out meeting and surmounting the principal labors and difficulties of spelling. To distinguish cat from rat, for instance, he must observe the diversity of the letters c and r in the two words to distinguish eat from ate, he must observe the different arrangements of the letters; that is, he must spell mentally, if he does not do it orally. Beside, it is too evident from experience, that it is a very tedious thing even for those, who have an ordinary degree of acquaintance with the orthography of words, to read their first exercises in composition; and that those who have read volumes and libraries, without first learning to spell, are generally bad 8 llers and bad readers through the whole of their lives, owever much they may excel in information, or natural understand mg.
