Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Complete Rags of Time: A Season in Prison (Parts 1 and 2) publishes for the first time all the prison narrative I wrote in the six-month period (January 1971–June 1971) after my release from Federal Prison in November 1970. Rags of Time: A Season in Prison (Beacon, 1972) was only part 1 of the narrative. It was published because it was complete in itself, and Beacon wanted it out as quickly as possible. Beacon had just published, in book form for the first time, The Pentagon Papers, and desired, I think, a more human face to put on their antiwar efforts. I think too they hoped I would promote both books on tour. I disappointed them in that effort. I was not ready for a book tour and would not participate in such a venture. The manuscript has gathered dust over the decades, for at the time, I held out hope that Beacon would publish it. But in the pre-Watergate days, when Rags was published, mainstream reviewers would not pick it up. It did receive some positive reviews in alternative press venues, had a wide library circulation, here and in Canada, and was taught in college and university courses on both coasts. Before I too turn to dust, I feel it necessary, not only to complete the record, but to complete the story of my friends, fellow prisoners of war, who took their stand against the war to prison. Now, for all the victims of our war without end, NSA surveillance, the fascist Homeland Security apparatus, and the unconscionable strip searches of the rights and bodies of old and young, I feel the need to throw yet another book to the barricade.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fruit of her determined prayer for a way to give her spirit time to catch up, this pithy reflection on the qualities of time will introduce highly respected biblical scholar, professor, pastor, widow, friend, and author Bonnie Thurston to a wider audience - everyone who is time-pressed and deadline pressured. The news is good: Time is the creation of a generous God who always provides not only the bare essentials, but usually a feast. As the writer of Ecclesiastes mused: For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven. It is with her trust in this abundance that Thurston explores the mystery of time and the rediscovery of the Judeo-Christian understanding of time as God's sacred and bountiful gift. She looks at time from both a historical and a theological perspective; she studies seasons as measured by the liturgical cycle, the monastic day, the jubilee year, and the Sabbath; and she ponders the meaning of time participles - familiar phrases such as finding time, making time, spending time, and marking time. With her encouragement, the reader will discover that there is enough time - if we redeem the time by reclaiming the Sabbath, the time built into the rhythm of creation by God for rest and re-creation. 'To Everything a Season' offers reflection exercises to help us understand both how we think about and how we use time, as well as suggestions for ways of making Sabbath in the midst of our own crowded lives. The result is an invitation and a recipe for living in the present moment, in God's eternal Now.

Book excerpt: The book is basically a boys' adventure story set in a very adult world. It offers an insight into the deprivation suffered by African youths, who bear the brunt of the social aggravation caused by the leadership of many of the continent's nations. Tito, the main character of the story is among the lucky minority privileged to find an escape from the quagmire by virtue of natural ability - in his case, football - and fate. However, he runs into a gridlock of events in alien Europe caused by culture shock, discrimination and crime, often making him wish he were back in his squalid habitat. The beautiful game of football and its big-time European variety is the vehicle in which the characters in the book travel through a landscape of love, hate, rivalry, camaraderie, sadness and joy.
