Book excerpt: This thesis describes a search for the decay B{sup -} {yields} {tau}{sup -}{bar {nu}}{sub {tau}} in 231.8 x 10{sup 6} {Upsilon}(4S) decays recorded with the BABAR detector at the SLAC PEP-II B-Factory. A sample of events with one reconstructed exclusive semi-leptonic B decay (B{sup +} {yields} {bar D}*{sup 0} {ell}{sup +}{nu}{sub {ell}}) is selected, and in the recoil a search for B{sup -} {yields} {tau}{sup -} {bar {nu}}{sub {tau}} signal is performed in the following {tau} decay modes: {tau}{sup -} {yields} e{sup -}{bar {nu}}{sub e}{nu}{sub {tau}}, {tau}{sup -} {yields} {mu}{sup -}{bar {nu}}{sub {mu}}{nu}{sub {tau}}, {tau}{sup -} {yields} {pi}{sup -}{nu}{sub {tau}}, {tau}{sup -} {yields} {pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup 0}{nu}{sub {tau}}, and {tau}{sup -} {yields} {pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}{nu}{sub {tau}}. They find no evidence of signal, and they set a preliminary upper limit on the branching fraction of {beta}(B{sup -} {yields} {tau}{sup -}{bar {nu}}{sub {tau}})

Book excerpt: The fundamental pursuit of physics has always been a deeper understanding of nature's workings. In the last fifty years this pursuit has culminated in a view of the universe as a complex tapestry woven from only a few fundamental particles and interactions. This description of the universe, the Standard Model of Particle Physics, has been highly successful at predicting the behavior of these particles and interactions. However, the model leaves many questions unanswered and the hope is that many precise tests of its predictions will yield inconsistencies, windows into new physical principles. The search for processes that are allowed by the Standard Model but inherently rare provides fruitful ground for such a test. The large sample of B mesons available from the PEP-II/BABAR B-factory furnishes an opportunity to test Standard Model predictions via rare B meson decay modes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: We present a search for the decay of the charged B meson into a charged lepton and a neutrino 458.9 million Upsilon(4S) decays recorded with the Babar detector at the SLAC PEP-II B-Factory. A sample of events with one reconstructed exclusive semileptonic B decay is selected, and in the recoil a search for the signal decay is performed. The tau lepton is identified in decays to an electron and two neutrinos; a muon and two neutrinos; a charged pion and a neutrino; or a charged pion, a neutral pion, and a neutrino. The analysis strategy and the statistical procedure is set up for branching fraction extraction or upper limit determination. We determine from the data set a preliminary measurement of the branching fraction a charged B decaying to a tau lepton and a neutrino = (1.8 " 0.8 " 0.1)E-4, which excludes zero at 2.4 standard deviations. We extract the B meson decay constant = 255 " 58 MeV. Combination with the hadronically tagged measurement yields (1.8 " 0.6)E-4. We also set preliminary limits on the branching fraction of charged B decaying to an electron and a neutrino at 7.7E-6 and the charged B decaying to a muon and a neutrino at 11E-6. The limits are at the 90% confidence level.

Book excerpt: We present a search for the decay B[sup -] [yields] [tau][sup -] [bar [nu]][sub [tau]] in a sample of 88.9 x 10[sup 6] B[bar B]pairs recorded with the BABAR detector at the SLAC B-Factory. One of the two B mesons from the [Upsilon](4S) is reconstructed in a hadronic or a semileptonic final state and the decay products of the other B in the event are analyzed for consistency with a B[sup -] [yields] [tau][sup -] [bar [nu]][sub [tau]] decay. We find no evidence of a signal and set an upper limit on the branching fraction of [Beta](B[sup -] [yields] [tau][sup -] [bar [nu]][sub [tau]])

Book excerpt: Decays of B mesons to states involving [tau] leptons can be used as a tool to search for the effects of new physics, such as those involving a charged Higgs boson. The experimental status of the decays B → [tau][nu] and B → D{sup (*)}[tau][nu] is discussed, together with limits on new physics effects from current results. Leptonic and semileptonic decays of B mesons into states involving [tau] leptons remain experimentally challenging, but can prove a useful tool for constraining Standard Model parameters, and also offer to constrain the effects of any new physics that may exist including the presence of a charged Higgs boson.

Book excerpt: We present a search for the decay B+ 2!l+[nu] (= [tau], [mu], or e) in (458.9±5.1)×106 [Upsilon](4S) decays recorded with the BABAR detector at the SLAC PEP-II B-Factory. A sample of events with one reconstructed exclusive semi-leptonic B decay (B- 2!D0l -$\bar{v}$X) is selected, and in the recoil a search for B+ 2! +[nu]l signal is performed. The [tau] is identified in the following channels: [tau]+ 2!e+[nu]e$\bar{v}$[tau], [tau]+ 2![mu]+[nu][mu]$\bar{v}$[tau], [tau]+ 2![pi]+$\bar{v}$[tau], and [tau]+ 2![pi]+[pi]0$\bar{v}$[tau] . The analysis strategy and the statistical procedure is set up for branching fraction extraction or upper limit determination. We determine from the dataset a preliminary measurement of B(B+ 2![tau]+[nu][tau]) = (1.8 ± 0.8 ± 0.1) × 10-4, which excludes zero at 2.4[sigma], and fB = 255 ± 58 MeV. Combination with the hadronically tagged measurement yields B(B+ 2![tau]+[nu][tau]) = (1.8 ± 0.6) × 10-4. We also set preliminary limits on the branching fractions at B(B+ 2!e+[nu]e)

This book was released on 2006 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The document describes a search for the rare decay B[bar] [right arrow] K[bar]vv̄ in a data set of about 230 millions of BB[bar] pairs recorded by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II B Factory, via the process e+e- [right arrow] [Upsilon](4S) [right arrow] BB[bar]. The method used selects events in which the B+ meson is fully reconstructed, and looks for a K[bar] in the rest of the event. This is accomplished by applying kinematical and topological restrictions that select B[bar] [right arrow] K[bar]vv̄ events with the largest possible efficiency, while rejecting a maximum amount of background events. The number of background events is estimated from data and from simulated events, while the value of the selection efficiency relies solely on the simulation of B[bar] [right arrow] K[bar]vv̄ decays in the BABAR detector. These two numbers are required in order to set an upper limit on the branching ratio. We analyze a subset of the data sample and provide an interpretation of the result." --
Book Synopsis Search for B Minus Going to Rho Lepton Anti-neutrino at ARGUS by : Patrick Richard Behrendt Saull

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Data taken with the ARGUS detector at DESY, Hamburg, specifically BB pairs produced from $e sp+e sp-$ collisions at the energy of the $ Upsilon$(4S) resonance, are used to investigate the decay channel $B sp- to rho sp0 ell sp- bar nu.$ Observation of a signal would be conclusive evidence that the CKM matrix element $V sb{ub}$ is non-zero, a necessary condition for the validity of the Kobayashi-Maskawa explanation for CP violation. The recoil mass technique is employed to try to isolate signal events. Monte Carlo data are used to model the signal background, which is dominated by reasonably well understood $b to c$ decays. Using the model of Wirbel, Stech, and Bauer, a model-dependent upper limit of 1.6 $ times$ 10$ sp{-2}$ is placed on the value of $ vert V sb{ub} vert$ at 90% confidence. The results, however, suggest that further study of the $b to c$ background is warranted. In particular, B meson transitions to states with higher mass than the $D sp*$ may contribute significantly." --

Book excerpt: We have searched for the radiative leptonic tau decays[tau][yields] ee[sup+]e[sup -][nu][sub[tau]][nu][sub e] and[tau][yields][mu]e[sup+]e[sup -][nu][sub[tau]][nu][sub[mu]] using 3.60 fb[sup -1] of data collected by the CLEO-II experiment at CESR. We present a first observation of the[tau][yields] ee[sup+]e[sup -][nu][sub[tau]][nu][sub e] process. For this channel we measure the branching fraction B([tau][yields] ee[sup+]e[sup -][nu][sub[tau]][nu][sub e])= (2.8[+-] 1.4[+-] 0.4) x 10[sup -5]. An upper limit is established for the second channel: B([tau][yields][mu]e[sup+][nu][sub[tau]][nu][sub[mu]])
