Book excerpt: A search for directly produced Supersymmetric Higgs Bosons has been performed in the di-tau decay channel in 86.3 [+-] 3.5 pb[sup -1] of data collected by CDF during Run1b at the Tevatron. The authors search for events where one tau decays to an electron and the other tau decays hadronically. They perform a counting experiment and set limits on the cross section for Higgs production in the high tan [beta]region of the m[sub A]-tan [beta] plane. For a benchmark parameter space point where m[sub A] = 100 and tan [beta] = 50, they set a 95% confidence level upper limit at 891 pb compared to the theoretically predicted cross section of 122 pb. For events where the tau candidates are not back-to-back, they utilize a di-tau mass reconstruction technique for the first time on hadron collider data. Limits based on a likelihood binned in di-tau mass from non-back-to-back events alone are weaker than the limits obtained from the counting experiment using the full di-tau sample.

Book excerpt: A search for direct production of Higgs bosons in the di-tau decay mode is performed with 86.3 ± 3.5 pb−1 of data collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab during the 1994-1995 data taking period of the Tevatron. We search for events where one tau decays to an electron plus neutrinos and the other tau decays hadronically. We perform a counting experiment and set limits on the cross section for supersymmetric Higgs boson production where tan [beta] is large and m{sub A} is small. For a benchmark parameter space point where m{sub A{sup 0}} = 100 GeV/c2 and tan [beta] = 50, we limit the production cross section multiplied by the branching ratio to be less than 77.9 pb at the 95% confidence level compared to theoretically predicted value of 11.0 pb. This is the first search for Higgs bosons decaying to tau pairs at a hadron collider.

Book excerpt: The work presented in this thesis spans a wide range of experimental particle physics subjects, starting from level-1 trigger electronics to the final results of the search for Higgs boson decay and to tau lepton pairs. The thesis describes an innovative reconstruction algorithm for tau decays and details how it was instrumental in providing a measurement of Z decay to tau lepton pairs. The reliability of the analysis is fully established by this measurement before the Higgs boson decay to tau lepton pairs is considered. The work described here continues to serve as a model for analysing CMS Higgs to tau leptons measurements.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents a study of the scalar sector in the standard model (SM), as well as various searches for an extended scalar sector in theories beyond the SM (BSM). The first part of the thesis details the search for an SM Higgs boson decaying to taus, and produced by gluon fusion, vector boson fusion, or associated production with a vector boson, leading to evidence for decays of the Higgs boson to taus. In turn, the second part highlights several searches for an extended scalar sector, with scalar boson decays to taus. In all of the analyses presented, at least one scalar boson decays to a pair of taus. The results draw on data collected by the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector during proton–proton collisions with a center-of-mass energy of 7 or 8 TeV.

Book excerpt: A search for the Higgs boson decaying to tau tau using 7.8 fb^-1 of pp collisions at 1.96 TeV collected with CDF II detector is presented. The search is sensitive to four production mechanisms of the Higgs boson: ggH, WH, ZH and VBF. Modes where one tau decay leptonically, and another decay, hadronically, are considered. Two novel techniques are developed and used in the search. A Probabilistic Particle Flow Algorithm is used for energy measurements of the hadronic tau candidates. The signal is discriminated from backgrounds by the Missing Mass Calculator, which allows for full invariant mass reconstruction of tau tau pair. The data are found to be consistent with the background only hypothesis. Therefore a 95% confidence level upper limit on the Standard Model Higgs boson cross section was set. At M_H=120 GeV/c^2 observed limit is 14.9 x sigma_SM x Br(H -> tau tau).

Book excerpt: The Standard Model predicts the existence of one neutral scalar Higgs boson, which is a remnant of the mechanism that breaks the SU(2)[sub L]xU(1)[sub Y] electroweak symmetry and generates masses for the heavy vector bosons and fermions. Many extensions to the Standard Model predict two or more Higgs doublets, resulting in a larger spectrum of Higgs bosons including a charged Higgs boson (H[sup [+-]]). For a light charged Higgs boson mass, the top decay into a charged Higgs boson and bottom quark might occur. This thesis presents results of a direct search for this top quark decay mode via the charged Higgs decay to a tau lepton and tau-neutrino, using the hadronic decays of the tau leptons. The search data consist of 100 pb[sup -1] of Run 1 data collected between 1992-1995 at the CDF detector, from p[anti p] collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.8 TeV produced at Fermilab's Tevatron accelerator. A total of seven events are observed in two search channels with an expected background contribution of 7.4[+-]2.0 events coming from fake taus (5.4[+-]1.5), heavy vector boson decays with jets (1.9[+-]1.3) and dibosons(0.08[+-]0.06). Lacking evidence for a signal, we set limits on charged Higgs production at the 95% confidence level in the charged Higgs mass plane versus tan[beta](a parameter of the theory) for a top quark mass of 175 GeV/c[sup 2] and for top production cross sections ([sigma][sub t[anti t]]) of 5.0 and 7.5 pb, assuming the Type-II Two-Higgs-Doublet-Model. For large tan[beta], this analysis excludes a charged Higgs boson of mass below 147(158)GeV/c[sup 2] for [sigma][sub t[anti t]]=5.0(7.5)pb. Using the Standard Model measured top quark cross section from CDF, this limit increases to 168 GeV/c[sup 2] and we also exclude a branching fraction of top decays via this charged Higgs mode of greater than 43% for charged Higgs masses below 168 GeV/c[sup 2].

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work was nominated as an outstanding PhD thesis by the LPSC, Université Grenoble Alpes, France. The LHC Run 1 was a milestone in particle physics, leading to the discovery of the Higgs boson, the last missing piece of the so-called "Standard Model" (SM), and to important constraints on new physics, which challenge popular theories like weak-scale supersymmetry. This thesis provides a detailed account of the legacy of the LHC Run 1 ≤¥regarding these aspects. First, the SM and the need for its extension are presented in a concise yet revealing way. Subsequently, the impact of the LHC Higgs results on scenarios of new physics is assessed in detail, including a careful discussion of the relevant uncertainties. Two approaches are considered: generic modifications of the Higgs couplings, possibly arising from extended Higgs sectors or higher-dimensional operators; and tests of specific new physics models. Lastly, the implications of the null results of the searches for new physics are discussed with a particular focus on supersymmetric dark matter candidates. Here as well, two approaches are presented: the "simplified models" approach, and recasting by event simulation. This thesis stands out for its educational approach, its clear language and the depth of the physics discussion. The methods and tools presented offer readers essential practical tools for future research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elementary particle physics tries to find an answer to no minor question: What is our universe made of? To our current knowledge, the elementary constituents of matter are quarks and leptons, which interact via four elementary forces: electromagnetism, strong force, weak force and gravity. All forces, except gravity, can be described in one framework, the Standard Model of particle physics. The model's name reflects its exceptional success in describing all available experimental high energy physics data to high precision up to energies of about 100 GeV. An exception is given by the neutrino masses but even these can be integrated into the model. The Standard Model is based on the requirement of invariance of all physics processes under certain fundamental symmetry transformations. The consideration of these symmetries leads naturally to the correct description of the electromagnetic, weak and strong forces as the exchange of interaction particles, the gauge bosons. However, this formalism has the weakness that it only allows for massless particles. In order to obey the symmetries, a way to introduce the particle masses is given by the Higgs mechanism, which predicts the existence of the only particle of the Standard Model which has yet to be observed: the Higgs boson. In spite of the success of the Standard Model, it has to be considered as a low energy approximation of a more profound theory for various reasons. For example, the underlying theory is expected to allow for an integration of gravity into the framework and to provide a valid particle candidate for the dark matter in our universe. Furthermore, a solution has to be found to the problem that the Higgs boson as a fundamental scalar is sensitive to large radiative corrections driving its mass to the Planck scale of 1019 GeV. Several models have been proposed to address the remaining open questions of the Standard Model. Currently, the most promising extension of the Standard Model is Supersymmetry, which provides elegant solutions to the named problems by introducing a supersymmetric partner to each Standard Model particle. The superpartners of the matter particles are called squarks and sleptons, while the superpartners of the interaction particles are called gauginos. The mass eigenstates of the gauginos are referred to as charginos and neutralinos, according to their electric charge. Since the predicted supersymmetric particles have not yet been observed, Supersymmetry, if it exists in nature, has to be broken in such a way that the masses of Standard Model particles and of their superpartners differ. During the last decades, the energies accessible to experiments has steadily increased. The Tevatron Accelerator at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, with the two multipurpose experiments D0 and CDF, provides currently the highest center-of-mass energy ever reached in experiments using collisions of protons and antiprotons ((square root)s = 1.96 TeV). The study of the particle collisions allows probing of predictions of the Standard Model and its extensions, e.g. Supersymmetry.

The analysis is performed on data from proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The samples used for this search were collected in 2012 and correspond to integrated luminosities in the range 19.5-20.3 fb-1. The MSSM Higgs bosons are searched for in the [tau] [tau] final state. No significant excess over the expected background is observed, and exclusion limits are derived for the production cross section times branching fraction of a scalar particle as a function of its mass. The results are also interpreted in the MSSM parameter space for various benchmark scenarios.

This book was released on 2019 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Higgs boson, with a measured mass of approximately $125~GeV$, has been studied extensively since its discovery in 2012 at the Large Hadron Collider. This discovery opens the question of whether the Higgs boson of the Standard Model (SM) is the only scalar particle of Nature or it belongs to a larger scalar sector, as predicted in many Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) theories. Therefore, observation of charged Higgs bosons would indicate new physics. This thesis presents results of a search for a charged Higgs boson in the mass range $80~GeV$ to $3~TeV$, through tau-lepton final states. The search is performed using proton-proton collisions data at $\sqrt{s}=13~\mbox{TeV}$, collected with the ATLAS experiment, during 2015 to 2018. The final results are interpreted in the context of the Minimal SuperSymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) benchmark scenarios. In these scenarios, charged Higgs bosons coupling to tau-lepton are enhanced for some parts of the search phase space, thus increasing the chance of their discovery. No significant excess of events above the expected background from the Standard Model processes is observed. Therefore, upper limits on the charged Higgs boson production cross section times its branching ratio to tau-lepton and its associated neutrino are set at a 95\% Confidence Level. The results are also interpreted in the context of the hMSSM and $m^{mod -}_{h}$ benchmark scenarios of the MSSM. Due to the enhancement of the charged Higgs boson coupling to tau-leptons at high values of the $\tan\beta$ parameter of the MSSM, it is possible to exclude the high $\tan\beta$ region in the $M_{H^{\pm}}$--$\tan\beta$ parameter space. In this work, $\tan\beta$ values around 60 are excluded up to a charged Higgs boson mass of $1400~\GeV$. Furthermore, in the low mass region, below $170~GeV$, all values of $\tan\beta$ in range 1--60 are excluded at 95\% confidence level.

Book excerpt: The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector has successfully operated with the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) collisions since 2010, leading to the Higgs boson discovery in 2012 by the CMS and ATLAS collaborations. The analyses of data taken during Run 2 (2016-2018) has already led to many interesting results about the properties of the Higgs boson and for the most part they are compatible in the context of the standard model (SM) so far. These studies are important because the SM appears to be an approximation of a more general theory. Precise studies of the Higgs boson's interactions with the known matter and force particles are essential to reveal the microscopic deviations from the SM prediction. One of such interactions is Yukawa couplings of the Higgs boson and fermions. The H → [tau tau] decay is the most sensitive fermionic decay mode that allows direct probing of this interaction. This thesis presents a study of the Higgs boson properties by observing its decay to a pair of tau leptons and testing evidence of non-SM interactions in the Higgs boson production. The results exploit the data collected by the CMS detector during LHC Run-2, in proton-proton collisions with a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. Firstly, the Higgs bosons' properties were explored by two complementary approaches by measuring its cross sections. Thanks to the observation of the H → [tau tau] decay in 2016, we can measure the total cross section with higher precision. Furthermore, in the first analysis, the cross sections of different Higgs productions were scrutinized using fine selections within each Higgs production mode which are mutually exclusive using the Simplified Template Cross Section (STXS) framework, proposed by the LHC Higgs Cross Section Working Group. In the second analysis, the first-ever measurement of the inclusive and differential fiducial cross sections for the Higgs boson production decaying to a pair of tau leptons was presented. In the third analysis, a search for anomalous couplings in the Higgs production vertex, including Charge-Parity (CP) violating couplings, is also performed targeting Higgs boson production via gluon fusion in association with two jets and vector boson fusion. None of these analyses has found any hint of new physics beyond the SM, but stringent limits on anomalous Higgs boson couplings to data were set and cross sections of the Higgs bosons in smaller phase spaces were precisely measured.

This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Standard Model of particle physics is a successful theory, yet it is incomplete. Supersymmetry is one of the favoured extensions of the Standard Model, elegantly addressing several unresolved issues. This thesis presents a search for the pair production of supersymmetric particles chargino one and neutralino two, where the neutralino two decays to the lightest neutralino and the 125 GeV Higgs boson. The final states considered for the search have large missing transverse momentum, an isolated lepton and two jets identified as originating from bottom quarks. The analysis is based on 20.3 inverse femtobarns of 8 TeV proton-proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. No excess over Standard Model predictions is observed. The analysis has been combined with three independent searches that probe other decay modes of the Standard Model Higgs boson. Limits are set at 95% confidence level in the context of a simplified supersymmetric model. Common masses of chargino one and neutralino two are excluded up to 250 GeV for a massless neutralino one. The analysis of this dissertation has been reinterpreted in the context of a large scan of the phenomenological Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, along with 22 other ATLAS Run 1 searches. The resulting summary paper represents the most comprehensive assessment of the ATLAS constraints on Supersymmetry models to date.

Book excerpt: Zusammenfassung: This thesis describes the search for the neutral Higgs Bosons of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. The Higgs boson decay mode considered is the decay into tau leptons with one electron or muon and one hadronically decaying tau lepton in the final state. The p-p collision data analysed have been recorded in 2010 and 2011 with the ATLAS experiment at an centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of about 4.7/fb
