It consists of two functionally identical detectors each located $14.6$ mrad off the central axis from the Fermilab NuMI neutrino beam. The Near Detector is located $1\, \mbox{km}$ downstream from the beam source, and the Far Detector is located $810\, \mbox{km}$ away in Ash River, Minnesota. This long baseline, combined with the ability of the NuMI facility to switch between nearly pure neutrino and anti-neutrino beams, allows NO$\nu$A to make precision measurements of neutrino mixing angles, potentially determine the neutrino mass hierarchy, and begin searching for CP violating effects in the lepton sector. However, NO$\nu$A can also probe more exotic scenarios, such as oscillations between the known active neutrinos and new sterile species. This thesis showcases the first search for sterile neutrinos in a $3 + 1$ model at NO$\nu$A. The a nalysis presented searches for a deficit in the rate of neutral current events at the Far Detector using the Near Detector to constrain the predicted spectrum. The comparison between the observed and predicted spectra is translated into a measurement of the expanded PMNS mixing angles, $\theta_{34}$ and $\theta_{24}$ elements, and the matrix elements $\vert U_{\mu 4} \vert^2$ and $\vert U_{\tau 4} \vert^2$, assuming $0.05

Book excerpt: This thesis highlights data from MINOS, a long-baseline accelerator neutrino experiment, and details one of the most sensitive searches for the sterile neutrino ever made. Further, it presents a new analysis paradigm to enable this measurement and a comprehensive study of the myriad systematic uncertainties involved in a search for a few-percent effect, while also rigorously investigating the statistical interpretation of the findings in the context of a sterile neutrino model. Among the scientific community, this analysis was quickly recognized as a foundational measurement in light of which all previous evidence for the sterile neutrino must now be (re)interpreted. The existence of sterile neutrinos has long been one of the key questions in the field. Not only are they a central component in many theories of new physics, but a number of past experiments have yielded results consistent with their existence. Nonetheless, they remain controversial: the interpretation of the data showing evidence for these sterile neutrinos is hotly debated.

MINOS is a two-detector on-axis experiment based at Fermilab. The NuMI neutrino beam encounters the MINOS Near Detector 1km downstream of the neutrino-production target before traveling a further 734km through the Earth's crust, to reach the Far Detector located at the Soudan Underground Laboratory in Northern Minnesota. By searching for oscillations driven by a large mass splitting, MINOS is sensitive to the existence of sterile neutrinos through looking for any energy-dependent perturbations using a charged-current sample, as well as looking at any relative deficit in neutral current events between the Far and Near Detectors. This thesis will discuss the novel analysis that enabled a search for sterile neutrinos covering five orders of magnitude in the mass splitting and setting a limit in previously unexplored regions of the parameter space $\left\{\Delta m^{2}_{41}, \sin^2\theta_{24}\right\}$, where a 3+1-flavour phenomenological model was used to extract parameter limits. The results presented in this thesis are sensitive to the sterile neutrino parameter space suggested by the LSND and MiniBooNE experiments.

Book excerpt: MINOS, the Main Injector Neutrino Oscillation Search, is a long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment based at Fermilab National Accelerator Laboratory. The experiment uses a neutrino beam, which is measured 1 km downstream from its origin in the Near detector at Fermilab and then 735 km later in the Far detector at the Soudan mine. By comparing these two measurements, MINOS can attain a very high precision for parameters in the atmospheric sector of neutrino oscillations. In addition to precisely determining [Delta]m$2\atop{23}$ and [theta]23 through the disappearance of v[mu], MINOS is able to measure v[mu] → vsterile by looking for a deficit in the number of neutral current interactions seen in the Far detector. In this thesis, we present the results of a search for sterile neutrinos in MINOS.

Book excerpt: MINOS is a long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment based at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Illinois, USA. The experiment was designed to study neutrino oscillation phenomena. The v[mu] beam produced by the NuMI beam facility at FNAL is used along with two functionally identical detectors. The Near Detector at FNAL and a Far Detector 735 km away in the Soudan Underground Laboratory in northern Minnesota. Comparison of the observed spectra of neutrinos at the two detectors provides the evidence for neutrino oscillations. This thesis presents work on the postulated phenomena of sterile neutrinos. Oscillations between active and sterile neutrinos will lead to a deficit in the expected rate of measured Neutral Current interactions at the Far Detector. A technique for selecting Neutral Current events utilizing an Artificial Neural Network is presented with resulting overall efficiency of 91.1% and purity of 66.0%. A method of predicting the expected Charged and Neutral Current energy spectra at the Far Detector given the data recorded at the Near Detector is presented. A model to search for oscillations between sterile and active neutrinos is developed. Sources of systematic uncertainty that can effect the results of the analysis are discussed. The analysis developed is applied to a Standard Model 3 flavour oscillation model as a cross check under the scenarios with and without ve appearance. The oscillation parameters measured by this model are [Delta]m322 = (2.39-0.15+0.23) x 10-3 eV2 and [theta]23 = 0.727-0.11+0.22 for the no ve appearance result. An analysis of the resulting prediction reveals no evidence for active neutrino disappearance. The analysis is then performed using the 4 flavour neutrino oscillation model developed. Again this is done under the 2 scenarios of ve appearance and no ve appearance. The results of this analysis are [Delta]m312 = 2.44-0.14+0.23 x 10-3 eV2, [theta]23 = 0.755-0.12+0.19 and [theta]34 = 0.00+0.35 for no ve appearance and [Delta]m312 = (2.46-0.14+0.21) x 10-3 eV2, [theta]23 = 0.849-0.19+0.12 and [theta]34 = 0.00+0.60 for ve appearance. This is consistent with no oscillations between active and sterile neutrinos.

Book excerpt: MINOS, Main Injector Neutrino Oscillation Search, is a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment in the NuMI muon neutrino beam at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, IL. It consists of two detectors, a near detector positioned 1km from the source of the beam and a far detector 734km away in Minnesota. MINOS is primarily designed to observe muon neutrino disappearance resulting from three avor oscillations. The Standard Model of Particle Physics predicts that neutrinos oscillate between three active avors as they propagate through space. This means that a muon type neutrino has a certain probability to later interact as a di erent type of neutrino. In the standard picture, the neutrino oscillation probabilities depend only on three neutrino avors and two mass splittings, [Delta]m2. An anomaly was observed by the LSND and MiniBooNE experiments that suggests the existence of a fourth, sterile neutrino avor that does not interact through any of the known Standard Model interactions. Oscillations into a theoretical sterile avor may be observed by a de cit in neutral current interactions in the MINOS detectors. A distortion in the charged current energy spectrum might also be visible if oscillations into the sterile avor are driven by a large mass-squared di erence, m2s 1 eV2. The results of the 2013 sterile neutrino search are presented here.

Book excerpt: The MINOS experiment is a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment in the the NuMI beamline at Fermilab, USA. Using a near detector at 1 km distance from the neutrino production target, and a far detector at 735 km from the target, it is designed primarily to measure the disappearance of muon neutrinos. This thesis presents an analysis using MINOS data of the possibility of oscil- lation of the neutrinos in the NuMI beam to a hypothetical sterile flavour, which would have no Standard Model couplings. Such oscillations would result in a deficit in the neutral current interaction rate in the MINOS far detector relative to the expectation derived from the near detector data. The method used to identify neutral current and charged current events in the MINOS detectors is described and a new method of predicting and fitting the far detector spectrum presented, along with the effects of systematic uncertainties on the sterile neutrino oscillation analysis. Using this analysis, the fraction f{sub s} of the disappearing neutrinos that go to steriles is constrained to be below 0.15 at the 90% confidence level in the absence of electron neutrino appearance in the NuMI beam. With electron appearance at the CHOOZ limit, f{sub s}

Additionally, the location of the NOvA Near Detector is well situated to additionally observe short baseline oscillations to sterile neutrino states. We expand upon previous NOvA sterile neutrino searches by using a covariance matrix fitting technique. This analysis is the first with NOvA to directly include neutrino interactions in the Near Detector while fitting the data. The NOvA Near Detector's greater statistics to better constrain our Far Detector uncertainties in addition to increasing the range of $\Delta m^2_{41}$ to which we are sensitive.

Book excerpt: The Main Injector Neutrino Oscillation Search (MINOS) is a long-baseline accelerator neutrino experiment designed to measure properties of neutrino oscillation. Using a high intensity muon neutrino beam, produced by the Neutrinos at Main Injector (NuMI) complex at Fermilab, MINOS makes two measurements of neutrino interactions. The first measurement is made using the Near Detector situated at Fermilab and the second is made using the Far Detector located in the Soudan Underground laboratory in northern Minnesota. The primary goal of MINOS is to verify, and measure the properties of, neutrino oscillation between the two detectors using the [nu]{sub {mu}} → V{sub {tau}} transition. A complementary measurement can be made to search for the existence of sterile neutrinos; an oft theorized, but experimentally unvalidated particle. The following thesis will show the results of a sterile neutrino search using MINOS RunI and RunII data totaling ≈2.5 x 102° protons on target. Due to the theoretical nature of sterile neutrinos, complete formalism that covers transition probabilities for the three known active states with the addition of a sterile state is also presented.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The unveiling of neutrino oscillation from observing the change in solar neutrino flux triggered physicists' interest in studying the nature of the neutrino mass. The prevailing theory of explaining the tiny neutrino mass is called the "see-saw" mechanism, which postulates that the neutrino flavor eigenstate is the mixing between mass eigenstate of active neutrinos of a small mass and (left-) right-handed "sterile" (anti-)neutrinos of a large mass. The sterile neutrino is believed to be a new physics beyond the Standard Model, which can explain many other outstanding physical problems, like warm dark matter, asymmetry of baryon, etc. The HUNTER (Heavy Unseen Neutrinos from the Total Energy-momentum Reconstruction) experiment is a collaboration for searching for keV-mass range sterile neutrinos, and brings together an interdisciplinary team of researchers from Temple University, UCLA, Princeton University and the University of Hustonto develop an apparatus capable of searching for sterile neutrinos with high precision. In the HUNTER proposal, the radiation source generating neutrinos will be a cloud of atoms laser cooled and suspended by laser beams, the decay products except neutrinos will be detected by corresponding detectors, and their initial vector momenta will be reconstructed from the data recorded by the corresponding detectors. The missing mass in the decay, taken away by the neutrino, can then be evaluated from the energy and momentum conservation. The radiation sources of electron-capture decay are preferred for laboratory neutrino experiments because of the absence of energetic electrons in the decay products. 131-Cs is chosen by HUNTER to study the sterile neutrino mass and the mixing between sterile neutrinos and active neutrinos because of its short lifetime, simply decay products, and its alkali element spectral structure which enhances laser cooling and trapping. The Phase 1 HUNTER experiment targeting sterile neutrinos in the range 20-300 keV/c^2 requires the design of spectrometers with momentum resolution of a part in a thousand or better. To detect a 131-Xe ion, a spectrometer consisting of numbers of annular electrodes has been designed. The potentials of the electrodes of the ion spectrometer were carefully optimized to form an electrostatic lens, with time focusing and spatial focusing to achieve a high momentum resolution for ions despite the extended source presented by the magneto-optical trap. The optimization algorithm presented in this dissertation achieves a momentum precision of ∼0.12% (∼0.03%) for the high acceptance (high resolution) tune. An electron spectrometer was designed without "double focusing" for detecting the electrons produced in 131 Cs decays. The electron trajectories are guided by a uniform electric and magnetic field. An octagonal shaped, magnetic shield was designed to diminish the influence of external magnetic fields on the electron trajectories. The achieved electron momentum resolution is ∼0.1 keV including extended source effects, sufficient for the desired missing mass resolution. Other issues like the systematic errors of the ion spectrometer and the eddy current induced in the electrodes by periodically switching on/off the anti-Helmholtz coils of the magneto-optical trap were studied. The deformation of the spectrometer under its gravity was simulated using Autodesk Inventor.

Book excerpt: Longstanding anomalies in neutrino oscillation experiments point to the existence of a fourth, hypothetical neutrino: the sterile neutrino. Global fits to a sterile neutrino model find a strong preference for such a model over the massive neutrino Standard Model. However, the fit results suffer from inconsistencies between datasets, referred to as tension. This motivates more complicated models for new physics. This thesis considers a model of unstable sterile neutrinos, where the heaviest mass state can decay. First, the phenomenology of unstable sterile neutrinos is explored in the IceCube experiment, a gigaton neutrino detector located at the South Pole. Second, global fits to traditional and unstable sterile neutrino models are combined with one year of data from IceCube. A preference for the unstable sterile neutrino model is found, as well as a reduction in tension. Lastly, a high statistics search for unstable sterile neutrinos is performed in IceCube. The Standard Model is rejected with a p-value of 2.8% and the traditional sterile neutrino model is rejected with a p-value of 4.9%. The best-fit point is [mathematical formula] , [mathematical formula], and g2 = 2.5[pi] ± 1.5[pi], where g is the coupling that mediates the neutrino decay. The best-fit corresponds to a lifetime of the heaviest neutrino of [tau]4/m4 = 6 × 10−16 s/eV. A Bayesian analysis finds a best model with similar sterile parameters.
