Book excerpt: This thesis reports the reconstruction and lifetime measurement of B+, B$0/atop{d}$ and B$0/atop{s}$ mesons, performed using fully reconstructed hadronic decays collected by a dedicated trigger at CDF II experiment. This dedicated trigger selects significantly displaced tracks from primary vertex of p$\bar{p}$ collisions generated at Tevatron collider, obtaining, in this way, huge data samples enriched of long-lived particles, and is therefore suitable for reconstruction of B meson in hadronic decay modes. Due to the trigger track impact parameter selections, the proper decay time distributions of the B mesons no longer follow a simply exponential decay law. This complicates the lifetime measurement and requires a correct understanding and treatment of all the involved effects to keep systematic uncertainties under control. This thesis presents a method to extract the lifetime of B mesons in "ct- biased" samples, based on a Monte Carlo approach, to correct for the effects of the trigger and analysis selections. We present the results of this method when applied on fully re- constructed decays of B collected by CDF II in the data taking runs up to August 2004, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 360 pb-1. The lifetimes are extracted using the decay modes B+ 2!$\bar{D}$0[pi]+, B$0\atop{d}$ 2!D-[pi]+, B$0\atop{d}$ 2!D-[pi]+[pi]-[pi]+, B$0\atop{s}$ 2!D$-\atop{s}$[pi]+ and B$0\atop{s}$ 2!D$-\atop{s}$ [pi]+[pi]-[pi]+(and c.c.) and performing combined mass-lifetime unbinned maximum likelihood fits.

The decay channels B$+\atop{c}$ 2!J/[Psi][pi]+, B$+\atop{c}$ 2!J/[Psi]a1 and B$+\atop{c}$ 2!J/[Psi]l+v were investigated, where l denotes an electron or a muon. Two candidates are observed in the mode B$+\atop{c}$ 2!J/[Psi][pi]+, with an estimated background of (0.63 ± 0.20) events. The weighted mean of the masses of the two candidates is (6.32 ± 0.06) GeV/c2, which is consistent with the predicted mass of the Bc meson. One candidate event is observed in the mode B$+\atop{c}$ 2!J/[Psi]l+v, with an estimated background of (0.82 ± 0.19) events. No candidate events are observed in the B$+\atop{c}$ 2!J/[Psi]a$+\atop{1}$ decay mode, with an estimated background of (1.10 ± 0.22) events. Upper bounds at the 90% confidence level are set on the production rates for these processes.

Book excerpt: We report on the observation of bottom-charm mesons via the decay mode B[sub c][sup [+-]] [yields] J/[psi]l[sup [+-]][nu] in 1.8 TeV p[anti p] collisions using the CDF detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. A fit of background and signal contributions to the J/[psi]l mass distribution yielded 20.4[sup +6.2][sub -5.5] events from B[sub c] mesons. We measured the B[sub c][sup +] mass to be 6.40[+-]0.39(stat.)[+-]0.13(syst.)GeV/c and the B[sub c][sup +]lifetime to be 0:46[sup +0.18][sub -0.16](stat.)[+-] 0.03(syst.)ps. The measured production cross section times branching ratio for B[sub c][sup +][yields]J/[psi]l[sup +][nu] relative to that for B[sup +][yields]J/[psi]K[sup +] is 0.132[sup +0.041][sub -0.037](stat.)[+-]0.031(syst.)[sup +0.032][sub -0.020](lifetime).

Book excerpt: "This thesis presents the searches for two rare B meson decays: the radiative leptonic decay B+ -> l+ nu gamma (l = e, mu) and the flavor-changing neutral current B -> K(*) nu nubar. These searches use the full dataset collected by the BaBar experiment, which corresponds to almost 500 million BB pairs. After fully reconstructing the hadronic decay of one of the B mesons in Upsilon(4S) -> BB decays, evidence of B+ -> l+ nu gamma or B -> K(*) nu nubar is looked for in the rest of the event. No significant evidence of either signal decay is observed. Model-independent branching-fraction upper limits are set at BR(B ->e nu gamma)17 x10 {-6}, BR(B -mu nu gamma)24 x10 {-6}, and BR(B -l nu gamma)15.6 x10 {-6}, all at the 90% confidence level. These are currently the most stringent published upper limits for B+ - l+ nu gamma. In addition, branching-fraction upper limits are set at BR(B -> K+ nu nubar)3.7 x10 {-5}, BR(B - K0 nu nubar)8.0 x10 {-5}, BR(B - K*+ nu nubar)11.5 x10 {-5}, and BR(B - K*0 nu nubar)9.2 x10 {-5}, all at the 90% confidence level. For additional sensitivity to New Physics contributions, partial B - K(*) nu nubar branching-fraction upper limits are also determined over the full kinematic range." --

Because of this ability, CDF II has accrued large samples of charged meson decays to fully hadronic final states in 64 pb[sup -1] of p[bar p] collision data gathered at[radical]s= 1.96 TeV. Using initial Run II data samples, the production cross sections for J/[psi], D[sup 0], D[sup+], D*[sup+] and D[sub s][sup+] mesons have been measured. Ratios of branching ratios for Cabibbo suppressed final states and CP asymmetries in D[sup 0] meson decays have been studied. A measurement of the mass difference m(D[sub s][sup+]) -m(D[sup+]) has been done, and a limit for the branching fraction of the FCNC D[sup 0][yields][mu][sup+][mu][sup -] decays has been set.

Using the method of double-tagging, BES performed the first model-independent measurement of BrD[sub s[yields][phi][pi]]. Our result was Br[sub D[sub s][yields][phi][pi]]= 3.4[sub[minus]1.7-0.7][sup+4.8+1.3].
