Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1894 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XVII. USURY. "Usury bringeth the treasure of a realm into few hands."--Lord Bacon. "A free government cannot long endure where the tendency of the laws is to concentrate the wealth of the country in the hands of a few, and to render the masses poor and dependent." -- Daniel Webster. "Thou shalt not lend on usury to thy brother; usury of money, usury of victuals, usury of anything that is lent upon usury." -- Deut. Xxiii. 19. In considering the subject of interest, I prefer to deal with it as a branch of the general term usury, since by so doing a much better and more comprehensive idea of its operations and its effects may be obtained, than by treating it as a separate and independent factor of distribution. Usury, which proceeds from the Latin "usus," to use, signifies the payment for the use of anything. Whereever payment is exacted merely for use, that, properly speaking, is usury. Thus rent, as payment for the use of land, is usury, and interest, as payment for the use of money, is usury, irrespective of the percentage charged. Jurisprudence, or as it is sometimes more appropriately termed, jurisignorance, has created a fine distinction between the two terms, a distinction that exists rather in name than in principle. As a legal term, usury is excessive interest; that is, a rate beyond that fixed by law, and its exaction is made a crime. As this legal rate differs in different states and countries, and at different times in the same country, it is necessary, not only to consult the statutes, but also the map, in order to discover whether one is perpetrating a crime or not. The only difference between interest and usury in law, is a difference of percentage. I shall use the word usury as a general term denoting payment for the...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Philosophy of Money: A Practical Treatise on the Nature, and Office of Money, and the Correct Method of Its Supply It is a great felicity that destiny has accorded me the unique opportunity of submitting to the citizens of the world, and especially those of my own sex, this - the solution of the greatest of all problems - how to put an end to poverty and inaugurate a prosperity in which all will participate. Other writers have attempted it, but their works have been incomplete or have been prevented from reaching the general public. Among the world's greatest thinkers on this subject are: - Josiah Warren, E. H. Heywood, William B. Greene, Stephen Pearl Andrews, P. J. Proudhon, Benj. R. Tucker and others. Why is it that these writers are unknown to university students? For over half a century it has been known that Political Economy as taught in our universities is not a science, but a sophistry unworthy of those great institutions. We appeal to women everywhere, as preparation for the duties of citizenship, to read up this important subject. That Professors of Political Economy in many of our universities have been employed to advance the cause of the moneyed interests, is amply proved by George H. Shibley in his "Money Question - Monetary History 1850-1896." Therefore we must read and think for ourselves. The welfare of the race depends upon a correct solution of this question! Referring to a restricted money supply, which is the underlying cause of all the evils from which we are suffering, including the European cataclysm, and which we have amply demonstrated in this volume, we say with Abraham Lincoln "Who can contemplate without terror the distress, ruin, bankruptcy and beggary that must follow? .... Many free countries have lost their liberty, and ours may lose hers; but if she shall, be it my Proudest Plume not that I was the last to desert, but that I never deserted her. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, most money is credit money, created by commercial banks. While credit can finance innovation, excessive credit can lead to boom/bust cycles, such as the recent financial crisis. This highlights how the organization of our monetary system is crucial to stability. One way to achieve this is by separating the unit of account from the medium of exchange and in pre-modern Europe, such a separation existed. This new volume examines this idea of monetary separation and this history of monetary arrangements in the North and Baltic Seas region, from the Hanseatic League onwards. This book provides a theoretical analysis of four historical cases in the Baltic and North Seas region, with a view to examining evolution of monetary arrangements from a new monetary economics perspective. Since the objective exhange value of money (its purchasing power), reflects subjective individual valuations of commodities, the author assesses these historical cases by means of exchange rates. Using theories from new monetary economics , the book explores how the units of account and their media of exchange evolved as social conventions, and offers new insight into the separation between the two. Through this exploration, it puts forward that money is a social institution, a clearing device for the settlement of accounts, and so the value of money, or a separate unit of account, ultimately results from the size of its network of users. The History of Money and Monetary Arrangements offers a highly original new insight into monetary arrangments as an evolutionary process. It will be of great interest to an international audience of scholars and students, including those with an interest in economic history, evolutionary economics and new monetary economics.

But, unlike the pound weight and yard-stick, the stan dard gold dollar is not a fixed unit of value; it is merely a fixed quantity of gold, which varies in value with the supply and demand, as do all other commodities. The dollar measure, therefore, varies constantly with the rise and fall in the quantity of money in circulation. This defect in the money standard of value produces illimitable evils, which constantly disturb the prosperity of the world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scientific Money: An American Dollar Should Have Only These Qualities A token issued by one is received by all and their products are transferred in consequence thereof. The circulation of the token rests upon this proposition: That the holder has in the token, an order on each and all of his neighbors for their surplus products. By common consent they pass from one to another, and thus facilitate the easy transmutation of one man's labor into something else desired by him. But is this not the exact purpose of all trade, local, national, uni versal? Can Commerce find any other design for her varied million daily exchanges, except that one set of men prefer, above their own, the manual creations of their neighbors? The final analysis of the motives for all trading leads to this simple fact, that each finds his advantage in the transfer of his surplus product. Now, the token has performed a business func tion for the farmer and tanner - these two settlers of the embryonic State. What is this function? Its nature is fourfold and is thus brie y described. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Common Sense, the Mathematics, and the Metaphysics of Money It is logically impossible to understand mono metalism and bi-metalism without understanding money, and to understand money in the light of real and not illusory facts, it is necessary to be able to give, not a. Single answer, but answers which are not contradictory, to the complex ques tion, What is money To give these answers correctly, is to show or demonstrate the science of money, and in order to do this and not merely attempt to do it, it is essential not only to take into account all the facts and give each of them its proper weight, without attempting to explain away any of them, but to look diligently for those masked facts which the money sphinx has veiled, and which nothing but the most careful and patient search will discover.
