Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Scientific Basis of Homoeopathy Obstacles which have impeded the progress of Allopathy, and indeed, Of all the departments of human knowledge ambi' guity Of terms, looseness of statement, hasty generalization, intermixture of deficient Observation and inconclusive infer ence, and innumerable sources of fallacy. The pretense Of employing successfully the inductive method in the present state Of Therapeutics, is a pedantic mockery. It was a golden axiom of Bacon, that truth emerges sooner from error than from confusion, and the proper question is, not whether a theory be true or false, but to what extent will it harmonize and explain phenomena? This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: UNDULATORY THEORY OF THE NERVE FORCE. t is very important, says Dr. Carpenter, that Physiological Science should be considered under the same dynamic aspect, as that under which the Physical Sciences are now viewed by the most enlightened philosophers. At the first glance, there appear to be in every department of nature, three distinct subjects of consideration?the forces acting, the material acted upon, and the phenomena produced. Although for practical purposes the ideal separation may be still necessary, our knowledge of their mutual relations has been greatly modified. The old conception of the material universe as being made up of matter and forces has given way to the more abstruse but philosophical definition, that the universe is matter in motion. It was for a long time supposed that Light and Heat were rays of infinitesimal molecules, emanating in straight lines from centers, and impinging upon surfaces. Electricity was considered to be a current of invisible, intangible, imponderable fluid. Subsequent discoveries revealed that an undulatory theory would obviate the difficulties of the old hypothesis, without losing any of its advantages. It has accordingly been adopted by all the best scientific authorities, and propounded and illustrated with a mathematical precision truly astonishing. These undulations are supposed to be communicated through an ethereal medium which pervades all space, and penetrates through the recesses of all bodies. But Professor Grove has shown that this hypothetical ether may be very well dispensed with, for the undulations may be safely assumed to take place in the molecules of the various kinds of matter. Heat, Light, Electricity, etc., therefore are not things, but states of matter. When a bar of iron is heated, the molecules o...

Book Synopsis Homeopathy Reconsidered by : Natalie Grams
Download or read book Homeopathy Reconsidered written by Natalie Grams and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-01-07 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Homeopathy is over 200 years old and is still experiencing an uninterrupted influx of new practitioners and patients. Many patients and therapists swear by this "alternative healing method", which in some countries is even financed by health insurances. This seems completely incomprehensible to critics: For them it is clearly evident that homeopathy is hopelessly unscientific and has at best a placebo effect. The positions of supporters and opponents seem to be just as immutable as they are incompatible. This book answers some essential and fascinating questions: What remains of the founding ideas of homeopathy in 21st century medicine? Does it really work and, if so, how? Which of the original theories can we still apply today with a clear conscience and use for the benefit of patients and the healthcare system? Where does homeopathy have its limits and does it indeed need to be critically reconsidered and evaluated? The author has dealt with the points of criticism for years, but at the same time also takes seriously the wishes and concerns of patients who often feel insufficiently cared for by conventional medical practice. Against the background of her own personal history, her book attempts to bridge the gap between these two traditionally opposing camps.

Book Synopsis Homeopathy - The Undiluted Facts by : Edzard Ernst
Download or read book Homeopathy - The Undiluted Facts written by Edzard Ernst and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-27 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the genesis, principles and practice of homeopathy, and discusses the reasons for its enduring popularity. Two hundred years ago, medicine had little to offer except blood letting and the administration of violent purgatives – practices which shortened the course of illness by hastening the death of the patient. Largely in reaction to what he correctly saw as the brutality and ineffectiveness of the medicine of his day, the eighteenth century German physician Samuel Hahnemann developed a system of therapeutics that he termed homeopathy. Ironically, while modern medicine has changed beyond recognition, homeopathy, with its roots in alchemy and metaphysics, continues to be practiced precisely as it was in Hahnemann’s day. Readers of this book will enjoy the story of homeopathy and its almost magical attraction, whilst learning much from the authors' rational and scientific discussion of the biological, chemical and psychological questions that this treatment raises.
