Book Synopsis East Central Europe in Exile Volume 1 by : Anna Mazurkiewicz
Download or read book East Central Europe in Exile Volume 1 written by Anna Mazurkiewicz and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-10-16 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The East Central Europe in Exile series consists of two volumes which contain chapters written by both esteemed and renowned scholars, as well as young, aspiring researchers whose work brings a fresh, innovative approach to the study of migration. Altogether, there are thirty-eight chapters in both volumes focusing on the East Central European émigré experience in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The first volume, Transatlantic Migrations, focuses on the reasons for emigration from the lands of East Central Europe; from the Baltic to the Adriatic, the intercontinental journey, as well as on the initial adaptation and assimilation processes. The second volume is slightly different in scope, for it focuses on the aspect of negotiating new identities acquired in the adopted homeland. The authors contributing to Transatlantic Identities focus on the preservation of the East Central European identity, maintenance of contacts with the “old country”, and activities pursued on behalf of, and for the sake of, the abandoned homeland. Combined, both volumes describe the transnational processes affecting East Central European migrants.
Book Synopsis Wagner in Russia, Poland and the Czech Lands by : Stephen Muir
Download or read book Wagner in Russia, Poland and the Czech Lands written by Stephen Muir and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-24 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Wagner has arguably the greatest and most long-term influence on wider European culture of all nineteenth-century composers. And yet, among the copious English-language literature examining Wagner's works, influence, and character, research into the composer’s impact and role in Russia and Eastern European countries, and perceptions of him from within those countries, is noticeably sparse. Wagner in Russia, Poland and the Czech Lands aims to redress imbalance and stimulate further research in this rich area. The eight essays are divided in three parts - one each on Russia, the Czech lands and Poland - and cover a wide historical span, from the composer’s first contacts with and appearances in these regions, through to his later reception in the Communist era. The contributing authors examine his influences in a wide range of areas such as music, literary and epistolary heritage, politics, and the cultural histories of Russia, the Czech lands, and Poland, in an attempt to establish Wagner’s place in a part of Europe not commonly addressed in studies of the composer.
Book Synopsis The Symphony and Symphonic Thinking in Polish Music Since 1956 by : Beata Bolesławska
Download or read book The Symphony and Symphonic Thinking in Polish Music Since 1956 written by Beata Bolesławska and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-22 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1956 was a year of transition in Poland, and an important year for Polish music. This year saw the beginning of a political thaw – sometimes called the Polish October – in communist Poland. It was also the year of the establishment of the 'Warsaw Autumn' International Festival of Contemporary Music. This was a time of great artistic ferment in Polish music, which also deeply influenced symphonic thinking. The year 1956 is thus an appropriate starting point for Beata Bolesławska’s study of the contemporary Polish symphonic tradition. Bolesławska investigates the influential Polish avant-garde, illuminating the ways in which new musical means and ideas influenced symphonic music and the genre of the symphony in the music of such important composers as Witold Lutosławski (1913–1994), Henryk Mikołaj Górecki (1933–2010) and Krzysztof Penderecki (b. 1933). Referring to the main elements of the European tradition, as well as examining briefly the symphonic activity in Poland before 1956, the book concentrates on the symphonic writing in the context of avant-garde trends, represented by the so-called 'Polish school of composers', as well as on its later redefinitions proposed by Polish composers up to the present day.

Book Synopsis Music and Infinity. Studies in Polish Romanticism by : MIROSŁAW STRZYŻEWSKI
Download or read book Music and Infinity. Studies in Polish Romanticism written by MIROSŁAW STRZYŻEWSKI and published by Wydawnictwo Naukowe Uniwersytetu Mikołaja Kopernika. This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rhythm of Romanticism in Poland is ominously tapped by history, politics, various defeats, and the sense of national captivity, but the descant to this main melodic line are rhythms and melodies of everyday life and extraordinary art. Contrary to many stereotypes and clichés referring to Polish Romanticism, national martyrology and historism are not the only matter of concern for Polish authors. Tradition, customs, everydayness, social relations, existence, and art are crucial literary themes. In addition, aesthetic experiences, the musical life, the search for sacrum in the individual dimension and outside the Catholic Church are typical of Romanticism in Poland, which brings this movement closer to the European culture of that period. All essays collected in this book are dedicated to these issues from the border of art, aesthetics, and specific mysticism.
Download or read book Awangarda written by Lisa Cooper Vest and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2020-12-01 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Awangarda, Lisa Cooper Vest explores how the Polish postwar musical avant-garde framed itself in contrast to its Western European counterparts. Rather than a rejection of the past, the Polish avant-garde movement emerged as a manifestation of national cultural traditions stretching back into the interwar years and even earlier into the nineteenth century. Polish composers, scholars, and political leaders wielded the promise of national progress to broker consensus across generational and ideological divides. Together, they established an avant-garde musical tradition that pushed against the limitations of strict chronological time and instrumentalized discourses of backwardness and forwardness to articulate a Polish road to modernity. This is a history that resists Cold War periodization, opening up new ways of thinking about nations and nationalism in the second half of the twentieth century.
