The present time is, in my opinion, a much more opportune time to make a start than has occurred during the last six years or more. The decline would have to be 7 or 8 percent or perhaps even more. A smaller decline would not assure a cut in fall egg production, since farmers could maintain output by reducing the rate of culling, using less rigid standards for selecting pullets among the chickens raised, and by increasing the rate of lay per bird. On December 1, hatcheries reported 12 percent fewer replacement-type eggs in incubators than a year earlier. In California, settings of light breed eggs in the last 3 weeks of December were 9 percent below a year earlier. However, these declines are not necessarily indicative of the season as a whole. Weekly deliveries of eggs to commercial breakers in August ran 2 to 6 percent above a year ago whereas in July they were 3 to 7 per cent under the 1962 level. Liquid egg production in July at 60 million pounds was 18 percent under July 1962. During the last week of August and first 2 weeks of September egg prices to producers continued to increase seasonally as they did last year. On September 13, prices paid to farmers in important egg-producing areas were up from mid-august by mostly 3 to h cents per dozen for top quality large eggs and 3 to 6 cents for medium sized eggs. Compared to a year ago, mid - September egg prices in these areas were mixed. Large eggs were 2 to 3 cents lower in all areas except the Pacific Coast where they were higher by about the same amount. Some are disposed to deny her existence, and to class her with such fabulous or semi-fabulous birds as the phoenix and dodo. Others admit that she has appeared in isolated instances, but is by no means common. Others contend that if she should appear in large numbers it would be a misfortune rather than otherwise, for such excessive egg production would weaken her system so that her eggs would not hatch healthy and vigorous chicks; and the 200 egg hen would be in constant danger of extinction from her own success. One thing is certain, however, the 200 egg hen is no myth. There are many of them scattered about, and the tribe is on the increase. My reputation for truth and veracity is reasonably good; yet I am willing to make oath that I had a flock of four teen White Wyandottes that from October to October gave me a total of eggs, an average of a little better than 214 eggs apiece. There are others who can beat this. Men are already talking of the 250 egg hen, and before we realize it she will be here. I do not see how a man can draw an arbitrary line, and say how many eggs a hen may or may not lay in a year. The hen in her wild state lays from six to ten; the average farmer's hen not over 100; while on egg farms the average is raised to 150. But why stop here? There are 365 days in a year; and I do not see why a pullet that is fully matured, that comes from an egg producing strain, that is properly fed and cared for and kept steadily at work, may not lay at least 200 eggs in that time. Accurate data are not available as to the extent of substitution of eggs for meat, but it is apparent that substitution of eggs for meat has taken place in periods of meat shortages, as in recent months. Civilian demand for eggs at ceiling prices throughout most of the second half of 19ur probably will exceed supply, because of reduced egg supplies and smaller meat production than in 19hh. Egg production is expected to continue below last year, and supplies available to civilians will be smaller than during the first half of the year because of the sea sonally reduced output and small commercial holdings of shell and frozen eggs.
