This book was released on 2012-12-05 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This revision comprehensively documents the New World species of the shore-fly genus Gymnoclasiopa, which primarily has a Holarctic distribution, including some species that are found in both the Nearctic and Palearctic Regions. Discovering additional species common to both biogeographic regions was an objective of this study, as was unraveling any nomenclatural issues that resulted when the same species was described separately in both biogeographic regions. Ten species are treated, including two that are newly described. The authors also document the obvious sexual dimorphism that is evident in some species but which was not previously appreciated, resulting in confused concepts of some species. The authors emphasize structures of the male terminalia, which are fully described and illustrated, in the recognition of species. In addition, detailed locality data and distribution maps for all species are provided. Much of this increase has resulted from a greatly improved sampling of the New World fauna, documenting the ongoing need for field work and better taxon sampling of the earth?s shore-fly fauna.

This book was released on 2013-12-16 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This revision comprehensively documents species of the shore-fly genus Hydrochasma Hendel, which is one of three genera of the shore-fly tribe Discocerinini (subfamily Gymnomyzinae) that occurs exclusively in the New World. The other two genera are Pectinifer Cresson and Facitrichophora Mathis & Zatwarnicki. All known species of Hydrochasma are described with an em-phasis on structures of the male terminalia, which are fully de-scribed and illustrated. In addition, detailed locality data and dis-tribution maps for all species are provided. Among New World genera of Discocerinini, Hydrochasma is perhaps the least well known, as indicated by the dramatic increase in recognized species reported in this revision. Before this revision, Hydrochasma included just seven species, and herein we more than quadruple that number by adding 27 previously undescribed species. These additions bring the total number of congeners to 34. Much of this increase has resulted from a greatly improved sampling of the New World fauna, documenting the ongoing need for field work and better taxon sampling of the earth?s shore-fly fauna. With clarification of species ? how they can be recognized and where they occur ? we hope that additional research on immature stages and other aspects of their natural history and ecol-ogy will be fostered and facilitated.

This book was released on 2012-10-24 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This revision significantly documents a continuing trend in the discovery and documentation of New World shore flies (Diptera: Ephydridae). Two genera of the tribe Discocerinini are treated: Facitrichophora, new genus, with all four included species being newly described, and Polytrichophora Cresson with 19 species, including 11 that are newly described. Previously, eight species were known from the New World. The authors emphasize structures of the male terminalia, which are fully described and illustrated, in the recognition of species and species groups. In addition, detailed locality data and distribution maps for all species are provided. Much of this increase has resulted from a greatly improved sampling of the New World fauna, which documents an ongoing need for field work and better taxon sampling of earth?s shore-fly fauna.

Now, dragonfly watching is catching on as a fascinating and enjoyable pursuit. Dragonflies are large, colorful insects with amazing and easily observed behavior. Noted entomologist Dr Robert Cannings introduces students, naturalists and outdoor enthusiasts to the world of dragonflies. In this compact book, he shows readers where to find dragonflies and how to watch and study them in the field. In the introduction, Dr Cannings outlines the natural history of these insects - their structure, life cycles, habitats and behavior. Then he describes the 88 species known in British Columbia and the Yukon, noting habitat preferences and distribution. To make identification easy, each description has one or more color photographs and comparisons with similar species.

Book excerpt: This publication provides a comprehensive review of the nomenclature and distribution of the Geadephaga of America, north of Mexico. Overall 2439 valid species-group taxa in 208 genera are catalogued along with their synonyms. Besides the usual information pertaining to author(s), date and page of publication, the type locality, location of name-bearing type, first reference establishing each synonym, and etymology for many patronymic names are provided for species-group names. Genus-group names are listed with the author(s), year of publication, page citation, type species with manner of fixation and etymology for most. The geographical distributions of all species-group taxa are briefly summarized and their state and province records are indicated. About 2500 references are listed with publication dates for many in order to assess priority of names.Several new nomenclatural acts are introduced including one new genus-group taxon, one new replacement name, three changes in precedence, five new genus-group synonymies, 65 new species-group synonymies, one new species-group status, and 12 new combinations. The work includes also a discussion of the notable private North American carabid collections, a synopsis of all extant world geadephagan tribes and subfamilies, a brief faunistic assessment of the fauna, a list of North American fossil Geadephaga, a list of North American Geadephaga larvae described or illustrated, a list of species described from specimens mislabeled as from North America, and a list of unavailable names listed from North America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mankind has evolved both genetically and culturally to become a most successful and dominant species. But we are now so numerous and our technology is so p- erful that we are having major effects on the planet, its environment, and the b- sphere. For some years prophets have warned of the possible detrimental consequences of our activities, such as pollution, deforestation, and overfishing, and recently it has become clear that we are even changing the atmosphere (e. g. ozone, carbon dioxide). This is worrying since the planet’s life systems are involved and dependent on its functioning. Current climate change – global w arming – is one recognised consequence of this larger problem. To face this major challenge, we will need the research and advice of many disciplines – Physics, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Biology, and Sociology – and particularly the commitment of wise politicians such as US Senator Al Gore. An important aspect of this global problem that has been researched for several decades is the loss of species and the impoverishment of our ecosystems, and hence their ability to sustain themselves, and more particularly us! Through evolutionary time new species have been generated and some have gone extinct. Such extinction and regeneration are moulded by changes in the earth’s crust, atmosphere, and resultant climate. Some extinctions have been massive, particularly those asso- ated with catastrophic meteoric impacts like the end of the Cretaceous Period 65Mya.
